“Ball and Parlay” will hit a little different at Cleve Abbott Stadium, possibly as soon as this fall and beyond.
Tuskegee announced the addition of lights to its football stadium as well as its baseball and softball fields, providing important improvements for one of Black College Sports’ signature programs.

“We’re really excited about the new lighting system on these three outdoor fields,” Golden Tigers athletic director Reginald Ruffin said in a statement released by the university. “It’s a way for us to take the game day atmosphere to another level for our student-athletes, alumni, and the entirety of our fan base. Besides allowing for night games, the new lights will extend practice hours and offer other opportunities. We want everything about our program to be first class, and these new lights will help us continue on that trajectory.”
The renovations to James B. Washington Field are the culmination of a project that began in 2016, four years after the field was deemed unplayable and the Tuskegee baseball team had to move home games to Paterson Field in Montgomery. Four years of fundraising by the baseball program resulted in games returning to campus in the spring of 2020.
“The decision to illuminate the three athletic fields is a testament to President Charlotte Morris,’ and the Tuskegee University Board of Trustees’ unwavering commitment to enhancing the students’ experience,” COO/VP of Student Affairs Rolandus Rice said.
The university says the lights will be in place and ready to go in time for the 2024-25 academic and athletic year.
