Florida A&M walks off Grambling
The Grambling State University baseball team carried a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning but couldn’t withstand a late rally by Florida A&M, dropping its opening game of the Andre Dawson Classic 7-6 on Friday evening.
Down to its final three outs, FAMU (3-2) used a leadoff home run followed by some patient approaches at the plate, drawing a walk-off walk to sneak past the Tigers in the final frame.
Ashton Inman paced the GSU (1-4) at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
Randy Reyes started the game on the mound for the Tigers, striking out six batters in 5.0 innings of work. He allowed four runs on five hits and five walks.
Panthers holds off NC A&T
Sophomore Michael Burroughs collected four hits to help lead the Prairie View A&M Panthers past the N.C. A&T Aggies 7-5 on Friday.
Junior Elijah Breeden (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Prairie View A&M (4-1). The right-hander went two innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on two hits, allowing no walks and striking out three.
Junior Michael Dews also made an impact on the mound for the Panthers, starting the ballgame and throwing six innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.
In addition to his four hits, Burroughs had a double, a home run, and an RBI to lead the Panthers. Junior Isaac Davila put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and three RBI. Junior Lee. Allen also contributed for Prairie View A&M, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double.
Southern cruises past Alabama State
Southern gets back in the winning column in a dominating fashion by knocking off Alabama State 7-1 on day one of the Andre Dawson Classic in Vero Beach, Florida, on Friday afternoon.
Southern and Alabama State went scoreless in the first inning before the Jaguars picked up two runs in the second and never looked back.
Southern picked up five runs over a period of three innings to take full control of the contest.
Ranard Grace pitched six innings for the Jaguars, throwing 85 pitches and giving up only one hit and no runs on the day.
