There will potentially be an extra opportunity for MEAC and SWAC women’s basketball to participate in postseason play.
The NCAA announced the creation of the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament on Monday, a 32-team tournament that will be the second NCAA-sponsored women’s college tournament that will tip-off in 2024. The Women’s National Invitational Tournament is an independently run organization and tournament.
“Women’s basketball is at an all-time high with records being set for national championship and Final Four viewership, and the tournament was the most viewed since 2009,” NCAA D-1 women’s hoops Oversight Committee chair Jamie Boggs said in a statement. “This tournament will create an additional NCAA-funded postseason opportunity for women’s basketball, and it comes at a time when we are seeing tremendous growth in popularity for women’s basketball.”
The details about the tournament’s format, as well as a selection committee, will be released later this year.
