Florida Memorial University announced Thursday that Rodd Woods is the interim women’s head basketball coach. With over 21 years of experience coaching women’s basketball at various levels, including junior college and NCAA Division I, Woods brings a wealth of expertise to the role.
“We are excited to have Coach Woods join our team and lead the Florida Memorial women’s basketball program. His extensive experience spanning two decades makes him an invaluable addition,” stated Jason Horn, Director of Athletics. “Not only does he possess great experience as a head coach, but also as an administrator.”
Woods most recently served as the head coach at Barry University in Miami Shores, where he achieved a 14-15 overall record and led the team to the Sunshine State Conference tournament. While at Barry, Woods played a pivotal role in developing post-player K’Nari Holliday, who received the Freshman of the Year accolade.
Before his tenure at Barry University, Woods spent a season at East Mississippi Community College, assisting head coach Sharon Thompson in guiding the Lions to a 12-13 record.
Prior to his time at East Mississippi, Woods served as an assistant coach at Mississippi Valley State University for three years under Ashley Walker-Johnson. He then held the same position at South Carolina State University for an additional three years, where he contributed to coaching two all-conference players. Woods managed various responsibilities at both institutions, including recruiting, scheduling, budgeting, community outreach, individual player skill development, scouting opposing teams, and overseeing team and individual summer camps.
Woods spent 12 years as the head women’s basketball coach at Clinton College in Rock Hill, S.C., also assuming the role of athletics director for a significant portion of his tenure. With over 200 career wins, he led the Golden Bears to five Region 10 runner-up finishes and coached three players named NJCAA Region 10 Player of the Year. Woods’ players excelled academically, with six student-athletes earning the title of valedictorian in their graduating classes at Clinton.
In addition to his coaching responsibilities at the junior college level, Woods served as a tournament director for the NJCAA Region 10 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. During the summers, he worked as an associate director at the Nike girls’ basketball camps held annually in Amherst, Mass.
Woods began his basketball coaching career as a volunteer assistant men’s basketball coach at Eastern Kentucky, his alma mater.
We wish Coach Woods much success at FMU. His time as our assistant coach taught us what a great person he is.
