In preparation for the Wells Fargo Championship in the 2022 PGA Tour, four HBCU golfers were able to play in a Pro-Am along with the tournament’s reigning champion Rory McIlroy who is also celebrating his birthday.
Jakari Harris representing Hampton University, Lennard Long representing Morehouse College, Elijah Royal and Joia Robertson both representing Fisk University all took part in the Pro-Am.
“It was a wonderful Pro-Am. It’s great, there are a lot of Wednesday’s in Pro-Am’s that aren’t as fun as something like today,” said McIlroy. “To be able to spend time with these guys and see what great golfers they are but also the great people that they are as well. I was sent all their CVs and bios last night and just the list of things they’ve done and accomplished at a young age – it was really, really impressive. It was really nice to spend some time with them this morning.”

These four HBCU golfers were part of Wells Fargo’s inaugural First Tee Future Entrepreneurs program.
“It was amazing – super friendly, super just helpful,” said Long about his interactions with Rory McIlroy. “Asked him some tips for chipping and he was willing to give them to me so I can take them back and give them to our kids when I coach them, so they’re really appreciative of it.”
