WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State University Rams football coaching staff will welcome back a familiar face as former Rams quarterback Kameron Smith returns as the team’s quarterbacks/receivers coach. After completing his career as one of the top players in school history, Smith will look to lead future generations of the Rams to the same levels of success that he reached during his playing career.

“It means a lot. It feels more to me than any other job,” Smith said following the hiring. “It means a bit more to me than it would being at a different university.”

Smith will make his return to the WSSU sidelines after getting a strong start to his coaching career. He comes to the Rams after two seasons at Saint Augustine’s University. Prior to coaching with the Falcons, Smith spent four years at Hampton University where he served as the team’s quarterbacks coach. Under his guidance, the Pirates had a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) All-Conference quarterbacks and continually produced one of the top passing attacks in the conference.

Smith’s coaching career came after a great playing career with the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes of the German Football League (GFL) and the Nebraska Danger of the Indoor Football League.

It was during his collegiate playing career that Smith truly made a name for himself. For three seasons, Smith was the starting quarterback for one of the most successful runs in the history of Rams football. After earning a starting role in the second game of the 2010 season, Smith led the Rams to a 32-4 record as a starter and he compiled 7,540 passing yards on 535 completions on 896 passing attempts.

He is currently the school record holder in total offense, passing yards, passing attempts, pass completions, and touchdown passes. He led a pair of WSSU playoff runs that included leading the team to the 2011 NCAA Division II Football Semifinals and the 2012 NCAA Division II Football National Championship game. “It takes a team,” Smith said. “If we didn’t have the top defense in the nation, it would have been a lot harder to do what we did.”

The Rams claimed the 2012 SBN Black College Football National Championship and a pair of BoxtoRow National Championships. Smith led the team to a pair of Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championships as well. He was also named to the Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-Super Region One team in 2011 and 2012, the 2012 BoxtoRow All-American team, and the AP Little All-America Team. He was also named the 2012 CIAA Offensive Player of the Year to go along with All-CIAA honors in 2011.

“I was surrounded by great teammates and great coaches so coaches and we all worked hard and we challenged each other,” Smith added. “So I believe that if we can get a good competitive spirit and get everybody working as hard as they can, we’ll be in good shape to go and win some championships.”

Smith will serve as the team’s quarterbacks/wide receivers coach and he will have a talented group to work with as junior Dominque Graves will return for his junior season with the Rams after starting for two seasons with the team. However, the Rams will be missing their top five receivers from last season’s team.
