HUNTSVILLE — Each year, the NCAA releases the Academic Progress Report (APR) scores. APR scores provide a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance.

Under NCAA rules, teams must achieve a multi-year score over a four-year period of 930 to avoid NCAA penalties. The NCAA has released the most recent APR scores for 2018-19 which include scores from the time period of Fall 2015 through Spring 2019.

The following Alabama A&M University (AAMU) athletic teams exceeded the 930 multi-year benchmarks: Women’s Bowling (1,000); Women’s Tennis (1,000); Softball (985); Men’s Tennis (1000); Women’s Basketball (934); Women’s Track (938); Women’s Cross Country (942); and Volleyball (960). The Women’s Bowling, Men’s Tennis and Women’s Tennis teams had a perfect score of 1000.

Three teams suffered APR postseason ineligibility, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Soccer and Men’s Track, for the 2020-21 season.

AAMU has shown improvement over the previous year’s assessment as single-year APR scores from the 2017-2018 season were dramatically improved during the 2018-2019 season for many sports.

“Our student-athletes have been resilient and have risen to the occasion,” Associate Athletic Director/SWA Kenyatta Walker said. “We are excited to see the continued improvement in our athletic department’s APR scores, this is a true testament to the commitment and excellence from our student-athletes, the academic support staff and coaches.”

The Alabama A&M Women’s Bowling and Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams were publicly recognized by the NCAA for their 2018-19 APR score as being in the top 10 percent of all NCAA Bowling and Tennis teams, respectively, the most in school history. This marks the second year in a row for Women’s Tennis and the fourth year in a row for Women’s Bowling.

Alabama A&M athletics is now tied for most teams to win this award in the SWAC and tied for fifth in the state of Alabama.

“Academic success is what we strive to achieve, and we have continued to improve each year,” Director of Athletics Bryan Hicks said. “I would like to congratulate the Women’s Bowling, Women’s Tennis, and Men’s Tennis teams for their academic excellence.”
