NEW ORLEANS — With a total of 238 points, the Edward Waters Tigers men’s outdoor track and field team won its fifth straight conference championship over two days at Tad Gormley Stadium. New York native Cliventz Alexis led the way in the field events and was named Men’s Field MVP as he racked up a total of 27 points. Xavier University earned a second-place finish overall with 198 points while Dillard University came in third place with 130 points.
Alexis finished first in the men’s javelin throw while his teammates placed in second, third and fourth respectively. Linton Meggie of Edward Waters picked up a first-place finish with a distance of 42.72 (PR). Tavis Batiste of Dillard finished second while Evan Simmons came in third for Xavier University.
The Men’s Field MVP was awarded to Xavier’s freshman Shane Buchanan who finished with 40 points and dominated the distance events. He placed first in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase, posting a time of 11:32.99. He also earned first place finishes in the 1,500-meter run and the 5,000-meter run.
Dillard’s Jovan Lambley produced a first-place finish in the men’s triple jump as he leaped a distance of 14.17 meters. Teammate Julian Williams finished second while Brandon Matthews of Xavier finished in third place.
Edward Waters racked up more points from the field as Fedner Homme earned a first-place finish in the men’s discus throw. Alexis and Meggie finished second and third respectively for the Tigers.
Thomas Donald of Xavier was crowned champion in the men’s shot put while Dillard’s Quamel Sessoms placed first in the long jump as he leapt a distance of 6.58 meters.
Delano Dunkley of Southern University at New Orleans produced a first-place finish in the men’s 100-meter dash, posting a time of 10.51 seconds while Dillard’s Tyrone Barrow and Cody Branch placed second and third respectively. Branch and Barrow later finished first and second in the men’s 200-meter dash.
In the 4×100 meter relay, Dillard’s relay team comprised of Branch, Barrow, Darrien Sheppard, and Stephano Flowers finished in first place while Edward Waters and Philander Smith finished in second and third place respectively. The Bleu Devils posted a winning time of 41.89 seconds.
In the 4×400 meter relay, Southern University at New Orleans’ relay team containing Twane Crooks, Leonard Ledgister, Jamar McNaughton and Acdane Campbell finished in first place with a time of 3:19.16 while Xavier and Edward Waters finished in second and third respectively.
