MEAC announces weekly men’s basketball honors – Dec. 26

NORFOLK, Va., – Kevin Larkin of Delaware State was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced today. Norfolk State’s C.J. Kelly was named Rookie of the Week, while Cedric Council of Coppin State is the Defensive Player of the Week.

Larkin (6-4, Sr. G, Georgetown, Del.) scored the game-winning basket in the Hornets’ 73-71 victory at in-state rival Delaware on Dec. 19. Larkin scored 22 points in that win, including 3-for-5 shooting from 3-point range, and he added 13 rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Later in the week, Larkin added another double-double, scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in an 89-63 loss at Weber State. They were his third and fourth double-doubles of the season.

Kelly (6-5, r-Fr., G, Long Island, N.Y.) was one of the spark plugs behind the Spartans’ 75-62 victory over UTEP in first-round action of the Sun Bowl Tournament in El Paso, Tex. on Dec. 21.  He scored 10 points, blocked three shots and added two rebounds, one assist, and one steal in just 18 minutes of action. In an 89-61 loss to ETSU in the Sun Bowl tourney championship game the following evening, Kelly totaled eight points to go along with two rebounds and one assist.

Council (6-8, Sr., F, Kennesaw, Ga.) grabbed a total of 15 rebounds to go along with three steals and one blocked shot. His top game was against Houston, when he garnered 12 rebounds, including nine defensive boards along with three offensive rebounds, in the team’s 75-44 loss to the No. 21-ranked Cougars on Dec. 23.  He added three steals and one blocked shot in that contest. Council had three rebounds in his team’s 80-63 loss to Louisiana Monroe two nights earlier.

Other Top Performers
Lamar Morgan (CSU) led the team with 19 points and seven rebounds against Louisiana Monroe.

Justin Steers (CSU) scored 13 points and tied for a team-high seven rebounds against Louisiana Monroe.

M.J. Randolph (FAMU) scored a total of 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a three-game stint. Shooting 13-for-23 from the field overall, scoring 10 points in contests against Oregon and Portland, and 8 against Utah.

Justin Ravenel (FAMU) scored a total of 40 points in three games, shooting 14-for-23 from the field, 9-for-16 from three-point range, while also giving out four assists and getting two steals.

Raymond Bethea (HOW) averaged 14 points in two games against Ball State and Hampton, shooting 52 percent overall, and 50 percent from 3-point range.

R.J. Cole (HOW) scored 29 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out six assists and got four steals in a contest against Hampton.

Zacarry Douglas (NCCU) scored nine points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out six assists while getting two blocks and a steal against St. Louis.

Armani Branch (NSU) tied a career-high with three blocks against UTEP.

Jamerson Derrik (NSU) went 9-for-17 from behind the arc in a two-game stint, landing All-Tournament team for the Sun Bowl Invitational as he tied a career high with six made three-pointers.
