Bowie State women top Fayetteville State in CIAA first round

Charlotte, NC – The Bowie State University women’s basketball team kicked off the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament Tuesday morning at the Bojangles’ Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina with a 69-50 win over Fayetteville State University.

The Lady Bulldogs, the #4 seed in the CIAA Northern Division improve to 20-7 with the win and will face the top seed in the Southern Division, Johnson C. Smith University on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. inside Bojangles Coliseum.  The Lady Broncos, the #5 seed in the CIAA Southern Division, finish their season at 8-18.

Denver Clyde led four Bowie State players in double figures with 17 points.  Kiara Colston added 16 points while Lisa Jing and Pere Alexander had ten points apiece.  Clyde also led the team with eight rebounds.  Kyah Proctor paced the Lady Bulldogs with four assists.

Yakima Clifton led Fayetteville State with 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists.  Breona Jones and De’Aira Smith had eight points apiece.  Jones and Tajah Clark also had three assists.

The Lady Bulldogs scored the first five points of the game and after a quick 5-0 run by the Lady Broncos to tie the game, created some distance with an 11-3 run to close the first quarter and take an 18-6 lead.

In the second quarter, Bowie State used a 12-3 flourish to push their lead into the double digit range, finishing the quarter with a 15 point lead, 35-20.

The Lady Broncos pulled within striking distance with a 10-2 run to open the third quarter and eventually won the period, 16-12, trailing by just 11 points, 47-36, as the two teams entered the fourth quarter.

Clyde and Colston took over the fourth quarter for Bowie State, combining for 12 of BSU’s 22 points in the period as the Lady Bulldogs pulled away as the period progressed, ending the game with a 9-2 flourish for the 19-point win.

The Lady Bulldogs shot 51.9% from the field for the game, connecting on 27 of 52 shots while the Lady Broncos shot 41.8%, making 20 of 48 shots.  The Lady Bulldogs were also the only team to make a three-point field goal, outscoring the Lady Broncos 15-0 from beyond the arc.  Both teams recorded identical 10-12 efforts from the free throw line.  Bowie State also held a 30-25 advantage on the glass and took advantage of 21 FSU turnovers, outscoring the Lady Broncos 29-22 in the points off turnovers category.
