STARKVILLE, Miss. – Southern University’s Trelun Banks and Adrian Rogers combined for 34 points in a 76-72 victory over Mississippi State in the first meeting between the schools Monday afternoon. Dating back to Friday, The Southwestern Athletic Conference now has victories over teams from the ACC, C-USA, SEC, and the WAC.
The visiting Jaguars held off a late rally by the Bulldogs as both teams moved to 1-1 on the season.
Banks finished with 18 points while Rogers added 16 by knocking down four of his six attempts from beyond the arc.
Jared Sam added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds for Southern. MSU was led by Craig Sword’s 16 points while Gavin Ware added 13 points.
SUBR held a 72-64 lead with 2:33 left in the game before the Bulldogs went on an 8-2 run and cut the Jaguars’ lead to 74-72 with 1:33 left in the game.
MSU freshman Malik Newman missed two free throws with 46 seconds left with the Bulldogs trailing 74-72.
