Aminata Seck, the Kentucky State University women’s basketball player who has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement since August, is expected to be released from custody Tuesday after an immigration judge set her bond at $2,500.
Seck’s attorney, Sadiqa Reynolds, announced Tuesday on Facebook that the 26-year-old Senegal native would be released after the bond was posted.
“Amina Seck will be released from custody on $2500 bond today,” Reynolds wrote in a social media post, thanking the Alsalman Law Office and the New Americans Initiative for their assistance.
Seck was arrested Aug. 7 at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport as she was preparing to travel to New York with her Kentucky State teammates. She has been held at the Grayson County Detention Center in Leitchfield, Kentucky, for nearly two months.
Her release follows a significant development in her immigration case. An immigration judge last week granted Seck’s request to reopen her case and halted a previous removal order, allowing her to seek bond while her immigration proceedings continue.
The case centers on Seck’s immigration status. The Department of Homeland Security has said she legally entered the United States on Sept. 1, 2019, on a temporary basis and later overstayed her authorized period. DHS previously said an immigration judge issued a final order of removal in September 2025 after Seck failed to appear for an immigration hearing.
Seck’s attorneys have disputed the circumstances surrounding the missed hearing. They have said she did not receive proper notice and have argued that she should be allowed to remain in the United States while her immigration case is resolved.
Her detention also raised concerns about her health. Seck has been dealing with a torn ACL and other medical issues and had been scheduled for surgery. Her attorneys have sought medical treatment for her while she remained in custody.
Seck is an All-SIAC basketball player
Before her detention, Seck was a standout for Kentucky State. The 6-foot-4 senior center earned Third-Team All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors during the 2025-26 season and was named the conference’s Elite 16 award winner for her performance in the classroom and on the court. Reports have listed her at approximately 11 points and seven to 11 rebounds per game last season.
Seck’s release from custody does not end her immigration case. She will remain subject to the immigration proceedings and will be required to comply with future court appearances.
For Seck, Tuesday’s development marks a major turning point after nearly two months in detention and allows her to continue her immigration case outside of custody.
