Men

Alabama State 64, Alcorn State 51

A 16 point performance by Jamel Waters, along with three other scorers in double-figures, helped the third-seeded Alabama State Hornets secure a 64-51 win over No. 6 seed Alcorn State in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.

The Hornets trailed by as many as 10 points early in the first half, but managed to go into halftime down by only two points with the score 24-22.

Alabama State shot 59.3 percent (24-of-52) from the floor in the second half and accounted for 42 points

The Hornets (19-11) will face No. 2 seed Texas Southern Friday in the semifinal round.

Alabama A&M 69, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 50

Justan Banks tallied 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Alabama A&M Bulldogs coasted to a 69-50 win over No. 4 seed Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the SWAC tournament quarterfinals.

Brandon Ellis had a game high 18 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals for the Bulldogs (14-15), who will face eight-seeded Prairie View A&M Friday.

Arther Capers and Damarquelle Tabb also scored in double-figures for the Bulldogs with 12 and 11 points respectfully.

Women

Jackson State 74, Mississippi Valley 68

No. 3 seed Jackson State was able to advance to the semifinals of the SWAC women’s basketball tournament with a 74-68 win over sixth-seeded Mississippi Valley State.

The Lady Tigers had four players score in double-figures.  Domimique Brothern had 16 points (shooting 7-14 from the floor) to lead all scorers.  All-SWAC first teamer Ayanna Hardy-Fuller had 13 points along with 8 rebounds, while Alisa Ross and Ayanna Lynn had 11 and 10 points respectfully.

Jackson State (15-14) will face second-seeded Texas Southern in the semifinals Friday.

Prairie View A&M 71, Alabama State 61

Jeanette Jackson’s 25 points and LaReahn Washington’s 14 points advanced fifth-seeded Prairie View A&M to the semifinals of the SWAC tournament in a 71-61 win over No. 4 seed Alabama State.

Alabama State’s Jamesha Blake contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds, but that effort was tarnished by the Lady Hornets’ 24 turnovers for the game.

Prairie View’s win snaps a three game losing streak that began with a loss to Alabama State on March 3.

The Lady Panthers (12-17) will battle top seeded Southern Friday.
