Prairie View A&M coach Waskyla Cullivan said after his team won its third Southwestern Athletic Conference title he was hoping the Panthers would stay close to Houston for the Regional round of the NCAA tournament.
“We would like to play Rice,” Cullivan said.
Well, the coach received his wish when the tournament pairings were announced Monday.
The Panthers, who finished the season with a 28-23 record, will play No. 1 seed Rice (40-17) June 1 in the Houston Regional. The rest of the pool includes Sam Houston State and Arkansas. Prairie View lost 8-1 to Sam Houston State Feb. 21. The Panthers dropped a 5-1 decision to the Owls in the 2006 regional.
Prairie View is 0-4 all-time in NCAA regional play.
