Mississippi Valley State 60, Jackson State 54

ITTA BENA, Miss. — Cor-J Cox scored 15 points and Paul Crosby recorded a double-double as Mississippi Valley State beat Jackson State 60-54 on Saturday.

Crosby scored 12 points and grabbed 12 boards while Cox added nine rebounds for MVSU. The Delta Devils controlled the boards 44-33.

Jackson State (5-15, 3-5 Southwest Athletic Conference) outshot MVSU from the field 37.5 percent (21 of 56) to 35.8 percent (19 of 53) as neither team shot particularly well. The Delta Devils (9-11, 8-0) outscored Jackson State 36-31 in the second half, holding the Tigers without a field goal over the final 1:27 and using free throws to seal the win.

MVSU outscored Jackson State in the paint 26-22 and 17-14 off turnovers. The Delta Devil’s bench contributed 27 points while the Tigers’ bench added just six.

The win moves MVSU to 8-0 in the SWAC for the first time in school history.

Prairie View A&M 64, Alabama State 57

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Marcellus Jackson scored all 11 of his points in the second half and Prairie View rallied to beat Alabama State 58-51 on Saturday night.

The Panthers (9-12, 5-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) trailed 48-43 with 4:03 remaining and scored 15 straight. Louis Munks made both his free throws to put Prairie View up 58-48 with 41 seconds left. Alabama State (7-13, 4-4) committed five turnovers, leading to six points, and Jackson scored eight points during the 3:22- spurt.

The Hornets finished with 16 turnovers in the game, and were outscored 43-37 in the second half.

After shooting 28.6 percent in the first half (8 of 28), Prairie View got 10 points from Munks and made 15 of 36 from the field in the second. Munks finished with 15 points, Jourdan Demuynck 12 and Jules Montgomery had 12 rebounds for the Panthers.

Tramaine Butler led Alabama State with 19 points.

Southern 65, Alcorn State 54

BATON ROUGE, La. — Derick Beltran led four Southern University players in double figures with 14 points and the Jaguars defeated Alcorn State 65-54 on Saturday.

Frederick Coleman tallied a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, Mike Celestin scored 12 points and Jameel Grace added 10 for Southern (11-11, 7-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference).

The Jaguars led the entire way after scoring the game’s first six points, four by Quinton Doggett. Southern led 31-13 at halftime after holding the Braves (4-16, 2-7) to just 3-of-27 shooting in the first half.

Alcorn made it 6-2 on Ian Francis’ layup with 16:16 left in the first half and wouldn’t hit another field goal for 10:44, when JaMichael Hawkins’ layup made it 19-7. Southern took its biggest lead, 40-17, on Beltran’s 3 with 14:35 to play.

Xavian Rimmer led Alcorn State with 14 points, Anthony Nieves added 11 and KeDorian Sullivan chipped in 10 rebounds.

Texas Southern 73, Alabama A&M 61

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Fred Sturdivant scored 19 points off the bench, and Texas Southern held Alabama A&M without a field goal for the final 6:47 to post a 73-61 road victory in Southwestern Athletic Conference play on Saturday night.

Grambling 60, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 55

PINE BLUFF, Ark. — Quincy Roberts scored 24 points, including 3 of 4 on 3-pointers, as Grambling State defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 60-55 Saturday night.

After a 48-all tie with 3:50 remaining, Grambling State (3-15, 3-5 SWAC) sparked a 6-0 run, predicated by 4 of 4 from the free throw line, over the next three-plus minutes to take a 54-48 lead with 35 seconds remaining.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-19, 1-7) clawed to within 56-53 with 18 seconds to play on a layup by Lazabian Jackson, but the Golden Lions were forced to foul and Grambling State converted six consecutive free throws to seal the win.

Mitchell Anderson scored 12 points and Savalace Townsend added 11 to lead the Golden Lions as their only players to score in double digits.

Grambling State succumbed to a 7-1 scoring run by the Golden Lions in the first half’s final 4:30 to trail 34-28 at the break.
