The Southwestern Athletic Conference continues its 2008 spring championships schedule next weekend with outdoor track and field and men’s and women’s golf.
Outdoor track and field will be returning to a former site as this year’s championship will be held at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans. The last time the event was held at this venue was 1999. Southern University took home both the men’s and women’s titles that year.
The Alabama State Lady Hornets and Grambling State Tigers will look to defend their 2007 titles. Alabama State finished with a total of 190 points, 34 points ahead of second place Southern University. Grambling State garnered 181 points, 14.5 points head of Prairie View A&M.
The 2007 men’s 100 meter and 200 meter champion, Lavarius Giles of Jackson State, will be returning to defend his titles. Alabama’s Jewel Wells will look to recapture the 10,000 meter and 3,000 meter steeplechase titles she claimed last year. Competition begins on Saturday, April 19 at 9:00 a.m. Sunday’s action kicks off at 9:00 a.m. while Monday’s events start at 8:00 a.m. Tickets are $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for youth and students with ID.
SWAC Men and Women’s Golf Tournament
SWAC Men and Women’s Golf Championship will be held at the Dancing Rabbit Golf Club in Philadelphia, Miss. The Lady Tigers of Jackson State will try to successfully defend their 2007 title and win their 11 championship in 13 years. Texas Southern’s defeated Jackson State to claim the school’s first conference golf championship. Prior to last year, Jackson State had won 19 straight men’s titles.
Day one of competition will begin on Sunday, April 20 with first round action teeing off at 9:00 a.m. On April 21, the final round for the women will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the men’s second round tee times begin at 9:00 a.m. The men’s competition will conclude on April 22 with a 9:00 a.m. start.
