grambling_logo.gif Jackson State broke open a close contest at the start of the second half with a 7-0 run en route to capturing a 70-57 victory over Grambling State in the Assembly Center on Saturday evening.

In a scene that keeps repeating itself over-and-over again throughout the season, Grambling State hung tough in the first half as they trimmed JSU’s nine-point lead to only one (27-26) with 1:07 left in the half after a three-pointer by Tia Pickett. Sensing GSU on its heels, JSU turned it up as the half came to an end and outscored the Lady Tigers 4-0 in the final minute to claim a 31-26 halftime margin.

Grambling State committed four consecutive turnovers to open the half and JSU took advantage by claiming a 38-26 lead with 16:35 left in the game. Jackson State never looked back after breaking the contest open and led by as much as 20 after a lay-up by Carena Easley at the 6:52 mark. GSU came within 13 points on several occasions as the clock winded down but the damage was already done as JSU remained in the hunt for the SWAC Regular Season Championship after capturing the win.

Erica Trahan paced JSU with 19 points while freshman Whitney Brown paced Grambling State with 13 points and six boards. The Lady Tigers return to the court on Saturday, March 1 as they face Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 5:30 p.m. in the Assembly Center.
