Jackson State, Texas Southern Stay Unbeaten In SWAC

The Jackson State Tigers played come-from-behind basketball in the first half and got several timely shots when needed to gain a 81-71 victory over the Alabama State Hornets Monday night in the Williams Athletics and Assembly Center in Jackson, Miss., on a nationally-televised contest on ESPNU.

After finding themselves down nine points in the first half, Jackson State (4-11, 2-0 SWAC) used a 22-4 run in the final six minutes of the period to take a 43-34 lead into intermission.  Alabama State fought back in the second period – drawing within four points (66-62) with under five minutes remaining in regulation.

For the Tigers, Jeremy Caldwell had a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds while Garrison Johnson had 17 points and two rebounds.  Darrion Griffin and Grant Maxey each had 13 points in the game while Catravia Givens finished with ten points.
For Alabama State (5-7, 1-1 SWAC), Brandon Gordon had a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds while Andrew Hayles and Brandon Brooks each finished with 11 points.
The Tigers shot 52 percent from the field including 53.8 percent from three-point range and 20-of-24 (83.3%) from the free throw line.  Alabama State was 45.2 percent shooting from the floor and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe.

Texas Southern 65, Southern 54 (Houston, Texas)
Sollie Norwood finished with a double-double – 22 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals – as the Tigers downed Southern 65-54 Monday night at the H&PE Arena.

The Tigers (3-12, 2-0) forced 17 turnovers and held the Jaguars to 29 percent shooting in the second half as they picked up their second conference win of the season.

Matthew Miller added 17 points and five rebounds while David Burrell had nine points and seven rebounds for the Tigers. For Southern (3-10, 1-1 SWAC), Chris Davis had 12 points to lead the Jaguars.  Jazz Williams had eight points and four rebounds while Steffon Wiley, Geri Guillory and Joseph Jack each finished with seven points.  Jack and Barry Honore’ each pulled down nine rebounds in the game.

Alcorn State 77, Prairie View A&M 62 (Prairie View, Texas)
Alcorn State had five players in double figures and – as a team – shot 52.1 percent from the field as the Braves downed Prairie View A&M 77-62 Monday night at the William Nicks Building on the campus of Prairie View.

Troy Jackson had 19 points and five rebounds to lead the Braves (2-13, 1-1 SWAC).  Jarvis Williams and James Kendrick each had 13 points while Anthony Ford and Jumane Reed each finished with ten points in the game.  Kendrick also had seven rebounds while Alex Owumi tallied nine points and five rebounds.

For Prairie View (2-12), Derek Johnson was 6-of-6 from the charity stripe en route to 19 points and six rebounds.  Brian Ezeh had 13 points and four rebounds while Jacoie Shivers finished with nine points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Alcorn State built a 33-28 halftime lead and did not look back in the game – outscoring the Panthers 44-38 in the final period.

Alabama A&M 94, Grambling State 61 (Grambling, La.)
Four players in double figures led the Bulldogs as Alabama A&M downed Grambling State 94-61 Monday night at the Assembly Center.

Trant Simpson and Desmond Jackson each had 15 points while Evan Hilton and John Smith finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.  Mickell Gladness had nine points, four rebounds and three blocks while Jonathan Belt had eight points, seven rebounds and three steals for Alabama A&M (4-8, 1-1 SWAC).

For Grambling State (0-9, 0-2), Duran Diaz had 14 points, three rebounds and three steals while Andrew Prestley had ten points, two rebounds and two steals in the game.  Jamal Breaux had six points and seven rebounds in the game.
