The Southwestern Athletic Conference – in conjunction with the Ward 3 Recreation of Lake Charles – is currently conducting its 2007 Soccer Tournament November 8-11, 2007 at the Lake Charles Multi-Sports Complex in Lake Charles, La. Six teams arrived in Lake Charles with the mission of ending the season as the conference champion.
Four teams saw action in the tournament’s two quarterfinal matches.
Match One – Mississippi Valley State 3, Prairie View A&M 0
The tournament’s opening match saw the 2005 tournament champion Mississippi Valley State Devilettes jump out early on the Lady Panthers. Prairie View used an up-tempo style late in the first half, but could not overcome the early deficit.
Amanda Blaede scored the first two goals for Mississippi Valley – first on a breakaway in the 24th minute and then on goal assisted by Yasmine Steitieh and Ashley Bailey in the 39th minute. Pella Hand scored a goal early in the second half for the final tally.
Match Two – Alabama A&M 2, Southern 0
Using a 10-3 shot margin, the Lady Bulldogs garnered a 2-0 victory over the Lady Jaguars. The 2003 tournament champion are looking to return to the same form that garnered them the conference’s first women’s soccer title.
Rachel Sepeng assisted on a goal in the second minute of play and then scored in the 16th minute of action. Alberta Annan was on the receiving end of the Sepeng assist and scored the opening goal of the match. Belinda kanda had the assist on Sepeng’s goal.
