Baldwin County running back R.J. Stevens flips from Alabama A&M to Army

Baldwin County running back R.J. Stevens de-committed from Alabama A&M on Thursday and has now committed to Army.

"This is going to be a perfect fit for R.J.," Tigers' coach Nathan McDaniel said.
Stevens ran for 1,184 yards and 14 touchdowns on 217 carries for Baldwin County this season. The 5-foot-11, 220-pound senior also has a 3.6 core GPA and made a 23 on the ACT.

"This was an opportunity he couldn't pass up," McDaniel said. "The second he finishes, he will be a commissioned officer. This will set him up for the next 40 years. He made a good business decision, and I'm proud of him."

Alabama A&M was Stevens' only other offer, though he had several other schools showing interest. When he made his ACT score three weeks ago, Army was instantly interested.

Can't blame any kid picking a service academy to further their education.
 
I can. We produce plenty of Army officers. In fact three of my boys from the yard has made full bird with in the last three years. I'm not impressed with the West point idiots I have worked for over the last 25 years. In fact they are some of the dumbest cats I've worked for. TPop33 remember the dummy we had in Eglin? Lol he couldn't put his hat on if it wasn't for a mirror. White skin was his friend.

No. His white skin. Sorry I don't praise white people because I know their skin gives them privileges black skin doesn't. That is why plenty of black west point grads get out of the service at captain and major because they won't make full bird. I work with plenty of them on Redstone Arsenal and this is their word's. Oh did I mention his wife daddy was a retired full bird that's why he married her. Oops sorry white doesn't impress me.

Too bad "white" impresses these kids and their families.

Plus, look who the first quote is from in the article. His HS coach. You already know the deal. All the white folks around this kid blew up Steven's social media as soon as he posted his Army offer.
 
When I see articles like this I'm reminded of Frank Kearse father. When Frank got offered by AAMU we were one of the few schools who offered. The others backed off because of his ACT scores, UGA being one of them. Well when Frank got his score up on the last test like this young man UGA went after him. His father stated in the paper "A man is who his word is. AAMU made a offer and Frank committed so he told him to be a man of his word". This is what real men teach their kids. The black community is made up of men with women feelings because even if the men in the black community are being raised by black men they are not being men to keep their word. Frank still is playing in the NFL for the Washington Redskins because he had the talent!!!! If you got talent you will make it to the NFL.

Now if Army revokes his scholarship like ULM did to a player, the kid and his family would scream bloody murder over the school lacking integrity.

Yeah I remember the cat you're talking about, I was shocked when he got promoted!!! Ya'll warned me about him and I didn't believe it, had to hear and see it with my own eyes.
But his skin was his privilege and so was his marriage.

The deal is Cee, you got a better shot at General coming from West Point. I am a NROTC alum but my counterparts from Annapolis were invested in heavily to be future Admirals. Not to mention the connections you make at the Service Academies can't be matched by our schools or any PWC that has ROTC. It is what it is. You just have to take advantage of the political aspect. I know a ton of brothers who definitely have done that at the Naval Academy. See that kid who plays QB for Navy. It is nothing a ROTC program could have done for him compared to what he is going to become in the Navy and when he gets out. Kid is sharp and knows he is black and will take advantage of his situation. I prop these schools because they are not like regular PWCs.

You will have dummy officers from anywhere. The service academy don't make you not be common sense smart. LOL. But neither does any ROTC program either. No school can change who you are mentally. If you don't have it. You don't have it. I saw alot of Academy grads that were not good in the Fleet or in Civilian jobs. The brothers I know who went to those schools had some Umph about themselves and took advantage of their connections. They were common sense smart as well as book smart. Some of the white boys just test well and get into those schools but they were not going to do much no matter where they went. West point or LSU. LOL.

Let's be real. Not many football coaches at SWAC schools or PWC schools will be happy with a player that wants to be in ROTC. The ROTC programs will not want them being ball players either. Hell our NROTC instructors at Southern didn't want me and my crab brother in the band because they said it was a distraction and took up too much time.

Can you imagine a kid telling our coaches they got to go to drill instead of football practice? They have that all worked out at the academies.
 
The part that bothered me is when his coached said " he will be commissioned as a officer ". That was true shuck and jiving". The General who runs Redstone Arsenal is a HBCU grad and a Kappa. Coolest dude ever!

They will not pull it. But the kid still has to get a nomination to West Point from his Alabama congressional district or Senator. The application is the same. The difference is the athletes still fall under NCAA regulations so they will get evaluated by the admissions board separately than the regular applicants to West Point. They can't be interviewed by West Point admissions officers in the field. I do that for reserve duty for the Naval Academy. I am not allowed to interview those that being recruited athletically due to the rules. But I can advise them on how they have to still go through the admissions process.

That kid with those test scores may not even end up at Army the first year. He may have to go their prep school. A 23 is low compared to what type of kids apply there. A lot of the Naval Academy ball players (white or black) have to go the Naval Prep school in Rhode Island for a year if they have good grades and good test scores but not outstanding grades and outstanding test scores to prove they can make it through the academic rigors of the Academy. Aint no basketweaving 101s at these service academies. And you can't blow off class or drill with the brigade.

My only question for this kid, does he really want to be an Army Officer. Because if he don't then going there is a mistake and should stayed with going to Bama A&M.

I agree. His coach was on some other crap. Ain't like officers get paid more by going to the academies either. It is the same pay. You have to be a career officer for the service academy to be really beneficial to you. I just question if the kid really wanted to be an officer in the Army or did he just want to get a FBS football offer.

And quiet as it is kept. Dude may not even see West Point his first year. He may have to go to prep school with them low ACT scores. Athlete or not. The service academies don't play that.
 
That's what I was really hitting at. Lol I knew you would break it down and then these folks would understand it coming from a former officer. He is a marginal student and will need some serious help. Now if he was a top notch student I wouldn't be bothered by the coaches remarks. Those academies aren't for the average kid. Folks don't realize that. You really have to be ready and disciplined for those schools.

Thanks for that insight JR. It sounds like his coaches were blowing smoke just to make things look better on themselves. Typical in recruiting. Send a kid to the biggest school possible so it looks better on the coaches resume', and let the kid suffer the consequences of not researching the details for himself.
