Why hasnt willie totten been fired yet?

I hate to say it, but TigerPride is right. Business wise, it makes little sense to continue to try the same thing, over and over. Valley competes in other sports, but none of those other sports takes the dedication, financially or physically, that SWAC football does.

Unfortunately, they have everything going against them ....

Facilities: I haven't been to Rice-Totten since 1986 (I don't remember much ... I was seven). However, from what I was told when SU went up there a few years back, if this conference ever decided to go on the next level, MVSU wouldn't make it. Granted, it's a better facility than Blackshear or Durley, but both of those schools have access to better or will get better soon. I have yet to hear an outcry for better facilities in Itta Bena.

Location: Itta Bena, Mississippi .... only Grambling and Alcorn come close to being in as small a town. Alcorn has built their facilities up and Grambling depends on their name where playing at home isn't as important as it is to the rest of us. Any type of improvements will come at a price and I don't see Northern Mississippi as a place full of disposable cash. It's only going to get worse with the nine game mandate and trips to southern Texas every year.

A lot of this goes to alumni support. You are correct... I don't think there has even been serious discussion about new facilities for basketball or football (both of which take you back to the early 80's when you visit). The new leadership (president) may help in advocating for such upgrades, but when you look at the grand scheme of things... and the lack of priority on the state funding totem pole... It does look a lil grim.

Let's be real, Valley is no worse or better than any other school in the SWAC. The whole conference is made up of second rate athletes. The best athletes don't attend SWAC schools. When was the last time someone was drafted in the 1st or 2nd round of any sports draft. This conference gets no respect as NO team in the conference is really a D1 program. Again, look at the OOC record for SWAC schools. So, while you take shots at what Valley needs to do, you might want to look around your house first. OLD SAYING- Hit dog will holler. I'm waiting on you to holler.

There is some truth to this, no doubt. However, if you look around the rest of the conference, those schools aren't moving because they are lazy (Southern, Jackson State), stuck in bad locations (Grambling, Alcorn, UAPB), or dealing with fan apathy (PVU, TxSU, Bama A&M) or the NCAA (Bama State). All of these can be worked on and improved with time.

Valley's issues are going to be there. Rich people aren't going to all of sudden move to Northern Mississippi. Unless this new president changes the mindset of your local area, where is the money to boost Valley going to come from? I don't know how they get by that, seriously.

Valley probably need to take the non-traditional approach, which means hiring a non-black coach at a lower level with plenty of drive and dedication to push a hopeless team to win. Some of these coaches are flying just under the radar and desperately needing to get exposure for the next level. Plenty of coaches at DII and below levels are dying to get to the DI-AA level in hopes for a chance at the DI-A level. It would be a win-win situation for Valley and the coach.

VSlater dude, dont lump all of us into your world. I know it SUcks being you all, but dont lump us with you.

Yeah right, how many guys were drafted out of the SWAC last season? Let me answer, the same as the year before. NONE. All I'm saying is the SWAC is no where on the map in terms of the professional sports radar. This includes all 10 schools. Mediocre at best. Every now and then, a real average athlete transfers to a SWAC school , and has his or her way with the rest of the conference. I love SWAC athletics, but you know that it's all second class at best. We can't even beat D2 Delta State( Valley, Alcorn and JSU). It's the same throughout this negro league we call the SWAC.
As far as coaching at Valley, get rid of Totten and all of those coaches that he played with during his hey-day. Get some young hungry coaches and watch the program go. Money would't matter if you're hungry.

Poor V Slater. There is a good website to see just how we stack up to the rest of Division I in draft picks. The SWAC had at least one draft pick in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. I think this year was the only year no player was drafted.

I'm not talking about 15th round picks.(Before you say anything, I know the draft does not have that many rounds). When was the last time a SWAC player was taken in the 3rd round or above? I like the way you play with #'s by listing the history of draft picks by schools. It's like Janet Jackson said, what have you done for me lately?

You all see why Valley is where they are? And this way of thinking is infecting our conference. That is why they (along with a few more) need to be re-evaluated and kicked out.

are you saying they should've turned Valley into that prison years back?

2006
2nd Round - Tarvaris Jackson, Alabama State
3rd Round - Jason Hatcher, Grambling

Check out the website. See what other FCS conference are doing. Look at the mighty Southern Conference. App. State, a powerful FCS school, has had three draft picks since 2001 and only one in the early rounds. Georgia Southern, zero draft picks since 2003. Wofford, zero draft picks since joining the Southern Conference. Furman, four since 2000 and none before the 5th round. I could go on...All FCS teams are in the same boat. Big schools stockpile the NFL-type talent. In the 70s, 80s, and even the 90s we were able to get more of that talent than our I-AA/FCS competition and so we got use to watching our guys drafted. Don't be fooled into believing these other FCS conferences are doing wonderful.

GET EM!!!!!!!!! I feel bad for people at VALLEY so much hate isn't good for your health!

Nobody has any hate, I'm merely stating what I think about the SWAC. BTW, I am friends with the head coach at Delta State, he often speak of the three Ms. SWAC schools. His last comment regardinbg the Ms. schools is always" I enjoy playing and beating those schools, especially JSU as they paid cash for their a#@ whoopin". Now hate on that

I bet they don't want to see JSU again...

Totten's ineptness as a coach has nothing to do with funding. Give an idiot a million dollars and what do you have??? An idiot millionaire.

Devil's Gun, you forgot one play. Remember that year when Totten had his players on the sideline after the ref blew the ball live for play. And JSU was at the line of scrimmage and just snapped the ball and trotted into the endzone on about a 50-60 yard run. Utter ineptness. Money can't help crap like that.

Totten should of been fired after that play.
