Whitlock article on Serena...WTH?!

Man, what a difference 6 years makes. It's time to revisit this thread. I wonder what Whitlock is thinking now.

Like much of his work, he had the right premise and still wrote the wrong article. The truth of the matter is she wasn't as dominant then as she could have been because she wasn't as focused on the game as she is now.

He was off base. Completely off base. How do we know how focused she was? She could have been injured or mentally drained. We don't know. Eat crow Whitlock!

I would hate it if she actually did lose some of that butt. She would have been past 24 majors by now lol.

She is doing this at age 33 when she's supposed to be going down hill and/or retired but she got re-dedicated a few years ago and the tour hasn't stood a chance. Sloane and Madison are supposed to be the future but Serena has put that work to both of them

No he was not. He was dead on when that article was written back in 2009. Serena had the talent to win 50+ grand slams. She has half azz it so much, everybody is shocked she has caught up to Graff. She's more focus while being in the best shape of her life since she's older and the end is in sight. If she only had this mindset back during the younger years. The sky truly was the limit for her.

Man please. Folks act as if they are around these athletes 24/7 and can feel what they feel. You don't know, he don't know, none of us know what the issue was and who's shocked??? I'm not and the people who know the sport aren't either.

Did you watch any of the Wimbledon commentary? All of them were saying they are surprised Serena went on this last major title run and put herself in position to pass Graff. Serena is 33 years old which makes her an elder in this sport. Just two years ago she only had 15 championships. Nobody and their momma saw her winning 6 titles (maybe 7) in only two years.

Yeah one of the commentators also said that Serena would lose to Sharapova as well as USA today. We see how that turned out.

White America will never accept the fact we are superior to them. They were happy when they thought the Williams sisters were done. See how they are happy Tiger is losing?

Regardless of the commentators back in 2013 at age 31 Serena only had 15 major championships. There were questions if she would even catch Chris Everett and Martina at 18. Serena has defied all the odds at age 33 and I just don't see her slowing down any time soon. She should win at least 30 championships, but she had the talent to win at least 50.

The record is 7-5 Serena in Majors. That's not owning.

Yep. Folks forget that Venus was owning Serena and Wimbledon at one point. Their father warned everyone about Serena and man did she come on (and I'm loving it). I was expecting Venus to have that same resurgence but it has never happened.

She's definitely the most dominant athlete (male or female) in the last 10-15 years (and maybe ever if she can possibly get the most majors ever).

On a side note Stephi nor Everett played a lot of doubles Matches. Serena and Venus own 13 grand slam doubles titles along with a gold medal. that's a lot of wear and tear too..
The only player in the Open Era with more double Grand Slams in Martina...21 grand slams, gold medal and 13 doubles grand slams and gold medal. martina has 30 doubles grand slams. I think the comp is better now and with all the coaching and training it's harder to win now than it ever has been... Which makes her run even greater...

Small correction on Evert: she played a LOT of doubles with Billie Jean, Martina, Rosie, Evonne, Margaret, and a host of others.
