Whitlock article on Serena...WTH?!

If someone already posted this, my apologizes. But I don't even know where to start with this one...there were so many other ways to write this article to get his point across. But I should have expected this from his negative, no-writing azz...

In addition to talking about Roger Federer and his record-breaking 15th Grand Slam title, we should also be celebrating Serena Williams and her assault on Margaret Court's record.

The problem is, even after knocking off her sister in Saturday's Wimbledon singles final, Serena isn't anywhere close to Court's 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

Serena, stop whining and think about your future.

At age 27 — the same age as Federer — Serena owns just half as many major titles (11) as Steffi Graf, the greatest women's player of all time. That's a terrible shame.

With a reduction in glut, a little less butt and a smidgen more guts, Serena Williams would easily be as big as Michael Jackson, dwarf Tiger Woods and take a run at Rosa Parks.

He rags on her looks WAY too much in that article, but outside of that, everything he said is correct. Serena does half-azz it in the non-majors, and if she put more effort into conditioning (she doesn't need to be a toothpick, but dropping 5-10 pounds would definitely help), she could/would go down as the most dominant women's tennis player, and perhaps athlete, of all time.

Right now, when she's motivated, there's not a woman on the planet who can hang with her, not even Venus. The fact that she ONLY has 11 majors so far is disappointing, as strange as that sounds.

I'm sorry but I think the article is bull$%#@!!! She has 11 titles and people are upset she doesnt have more!!?? REALLY!!?? Unlike her tennis counterparts, tennis does not consume her life, she enjoys doing other things. In my opinion tennis to her is something she enjoys but not a priority. I do agree that she really doesnt care about certain "small time" tournaments but hey thats her right. If she rather be hanging out with her friends and family instead of playing in some tournament in India or somewhere, thats her choice. As far as her body, I wont even comment cause thats just stupid. Bottom line, people will complain just to complain.

I don't disagree with the general premise of the article, it was the manner in which it was delivered and communicated. Generally speaking, all athletes, male OR female, can benefit from a trimmer body frame when needing to be quick and nimble. But sadly, his tone and negative comments will only serve for fodder for those others who already discredit Serena for various reasons (her attitude, her perceived laziness, her thick thighs, etc.). But he's ok with her size off the court because he likes 'onion butts'. ?!

There are those who call her baboon and gorilla and just flat out are disgusting when talking about her body size. Just read some of the comments from those ignorant folks who replied. His article just adds fuel to the fire, which is what he likes to do. He completely got off track with his comments and you would think that she has done nothing in the world of tennis. Essentially he has watered down her success because of the size of her jeans and has compared her to smaller, white females who play tennis.

There are many of us, athletes and non-athletes, who have not lived up to the potential that God has given us. There are way too many young, female athletes (not just minorities) who struggle daily with weight issues...I see it all the time. We all know she's thick and I'm sure it would be beneficial to be more toned and quicker. But when are we going to stop blasting and criticizing those who have accomplished great things, especially in a non-traditional sport for minorities, because of how they look? To tear her down and publicly belittle her accomplishments is ridiculously shallow.

I certainly hope some 16-year old, up and coming, black female tennis player with thick thighs and a big butt doesn't read this article and then proceed to starve herself.

Im indifferent about Whitlock, in the first place. Way too pig-headed and stubborn for a radio host. Alot of his stuff, usually, has enough validity to it to where you'd agree with some things. But, his attitude and choice of words mess it up alot for me.

Like for instance...he subbed in for the Jim Rome show, as he often does when Rome is out. Well, he was on a movie tirade...and, in all, was telling folks how the new movie "Hangover" was horrible and wasn't funny at all. His take was that none of the stuff in there was possible. This is despite 95% of the people telling him the movie was funny...and, that everything in the movie was, atleast, possible. He ranted about how the movie was stupid and made no sense to the real world (mind you, it's a movie) and yada yada yada.

For me, it wasn't the fact that he disagreed...it's the fact that he disagreed, and gave out this smug attitude like everyone was horribly wrong and stupid for thinking the movie was funny.

Yet again...not a whole lot of problems with it, in the end....cuz, that's his opinion. But, then he backed up his point by saying movies like "Scary Movie" and "Anchorman" were some of the funniest movie....lol.

Come on nah. If 95% of folks say a movie is funny..and, you disagree. Don't come back with movies like Scary Movie and Anchorman to prove your point...lol. Although, funny...those two movies weren't that funny.

Oh, Anchorman was funny. At first I did not think it was funny, but the second time I saw it the movie had me in tears.

I think Jason was being a little facetious about the glut. 'Cause if he thinks for one second that Serena can lose that azz, he is seriously mistaken. And if she went and got some ass reduction, I'm gonna have a problem.

I agree with what he's trying to say but his choice of words are poor.

p.s. I don't agree with the ass part.

The man is right and his choice of words is most appropriate. When compared to Margaret Court (and Martina Navratilova whom he does not mention), Serena is lacking in comparison to the all-time greats. The assumption that he makes is that Serena should want to be among them. She clearly has not cared about that, and it is her prerogative to do so. She does have other interests; tennis does not consume her life; and, that is absolutely fine. Had Serena (or Venus) wanted to play 40 tournaments a year, their numbers would be higher. They have made their choices to not do that.

There is nothing to be alarmed about on either side of this arguement.

No, the assumption is that her physique is the reason she hasn't achieved greatness. Even if tis point was valid, he could've done so without making derogatory terms about her body. And what's with the Paris Hilton references?? Its obvious that Serena's dabbling in acting and fashion is the reason why she's "underachieved".

Also, Court isn't a good comparison seeing as how she didn't play in an open area. Graf is a better comparison, except she never really had any competition. Her main competitors were Martina(past her prime) and Monica Seles(stabbed right when she was taking off).

I stopped reading after this post.

Ok if he was writing this article from a historical perspective, based on pure playing ability, number of tournaments played, ok. but he DID NOT base this article on that alone. He spent most of his time making comments that was completely and totally unnecessary. AGAIN...let's consider the source and also consider what he was trying to do. He should have maintain the comparison of number of matches played in a certain number of years and the achievements that each individual registered during her career.

Don't care how you cut it, his choice of words and his tone were not appropriate for the content of the article. basically he's saying if her butt wasn't so big she would be the best tennis player ever. Nevermind he only listed a 'few' of the top female players. A true comparison would include ALL dominant players. Does anyone remember that Monica Seles and Lindsey Davenport were both a little thick?

And for the record, Martina only won 18 Grand Slams...you can't even compare HER to Court...is it fair to compare Serena?

so my question to you DaC is, what purpose did this article serve except to provide a forum for those who already don't like the Serena, those who think that she has never deserved to be at the top and those who feel that she has no real tennis ability, just strength and power. This basically provided more fire power for those who have always thought she didn't 'deserve' or 'earn' her way to the top.

There are SEVERAL women players who are lacking in comparison to all-time greats. Why pick on Serena? Are we saying that if Serena doesn't end her career as the best EVER she's a failure? And all of this should be attributed to her weight?

Again, my issue has more to do with HOW he tried to convey his point. It was degrading and inappropriate in the setting that he chose. If he was with his boys chatting it up, ok...but to use his position as a national writer to promote his negativity and to influence more negative thoughts among the critics is beyond comprehension. What exactly did he expect to gain and how is this relevant considering she JUST WON Wimbledon not even two days prior? What happened to at least giving her credit where credit is due for accomplishing a major win?

This part of the Whitlock column makes no sense at all to me even more than the comments about Serena Williams' ass size (nice by the way) holding her back from greatness.

The majority of sports fans and observers don't care about tennis like that to say if Williams won more major titles she would be in the same class or exceed Tiger Woods, Jordan, Michael Jackson and Rosa Parks. We don't revere tennis players, no matter how great they are, like we do with football, basketball and baseball players. Especially when it comes to women athletes.

People don't sit around the water cooler or post on sports message boards about tennis like we do with other sports. Yes, Williams is a great player, but I would not put her in the same category as Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods. Those are transcendent athletes. Not Williams.

Neither of the Williams sisters have Tiger's mentality but even he takes tournaments off regularly. We all don't make our jobs our entire life. They do have this little issue of having to also play each other which in turn reduces their number of major titles. Who else on the tour has ever had to compete with someone who knows their game that intimately?

....Does anyone remember that Monica Seles and Lindsey Davenport were both a little thick? ...
Everyone who was paying attention remembers this, particularly of Davenport. Her weight was the subject of every televised event that I ever saw her play. "If only she was thinner...in better condition...moved away from the sweets..." It went on an on. It was true.

....And for the record, Martina only won 18 Grand Slams...you can't even compare HER to Court...is it fair to compare Serena? ...
It is the classic case of trying to compare players in different eras. Margaret Court never faced the depth of competition that Navratilova did, and Martina did not face the depth of today's field.

....so my question to you DaC is, what purpose did this article serve except to provide a forum for those who already don't like the Serena, those who think that she has never deserved to be at the top and those who feel that she has no real tennis ability, just strength and power. I dare you to find me anyone with a working human brain who thinks that Serena has no tennis ability. The same was said of Jimmy Connors simply because he hit the ball on the rise with a flat stroke and no one else was. Yes, Serena is strong and she can use that strenth and power to just blow players off the court in the early rounds of a tournament. However, she has also shown tremendous stamina and shotmaking while being the only player currently in the WTA who has held all four singles titles in her career - as well as multiple double titles with her sister.

If this article provides a forum for those doubters then let them enjoy themselves with their heads between their knees.

....

You pick on Serena because of the fact that she is the most dominant player in WTA but not ranked #1. Could she be #1 if she wanted to? Absolutely as long as she is healthy. She and Venus are among the all-time greats if they retire today and never even play an exhibition match again. Both of them are already successes and have been for several years. There is no debating that. We have already talked about why Serena is not likely to catch Margaret Court in GS titles:
  • Other interests
  • Not her ambition
  • More frequent health issues
  • Deeper competition
Personally, I think that weight and conditioning are a part of some of Serena's prior health issues. That is just my opinion.

These are not issues that have not been addressed with Serena directly. There is no news here. In the post-match studio interview after she won last week, Serena was asked about the rankings. She was rather cynical about it and it seemed that everyone on the set thought it was rather silly that she isn't #1. The semi-final match was one for the ages. Nothing can take that away. The final was rather anti-climactic, but it did not obscure the dominating performance that she had for the ENTIRE tournament. No matter what he writes, this clown can't take that away from her.

National journalists and talking heads get paid big bucks to incite controversy. This guy was just trying to butter his bread. Just see it for what it is and let it go.

The average salary for a national sports talk radio host is $84,000. The local guys range from $25,000 to $75,000 depending on the market of course

The average salary for a sports writer is $35,000. But that depends on the size of the newspaper and what market the writer is in. Some make as much as $100,000. I am assuming those are the national guys.

But it is not easy to be polarizing. To be able to hold an audience on radio, newspaper or Internet site and have them consume what you present every day is amazing to me.

A lot of people in Chicago claimed they hated Jay Mariotti when he wrote for the Sun-Times, but more people read his work than any other sports, news or entertainment columnist in the city. I loved the guy and his style. Sure, he wrote some nasty things and pissed off the White Sox a bunch, but you could not argue that guy was talented.

Man, did you see that booty when she got out of the car the day she was about to play Venus. I was like DAMN! I had to rewind the DVR to get a second look! She's not going to loose that booty. If anything, it will get a little bigger as she gets older.
