Well since this has morphed into a JSU vs SU slobber-knocker, must weigh in as an unbiased observer/spectator (with 11 years band experience, 6 corps-style, 5 HBCU style by the way).
I saw SU a couple times a year from 87 to 91 while living in DFW. I had to give the nod to PV in those clashes back then and a few to SU. SU was awesome in the stands. Later when I moved back to Alabama, I went to the first SCG in Birmingham, JSU vs Southern. In a head-to-head contest on that day, as an independent observer, to me it was JSU, no contest. SU was solid, good tunes, but JSU was solid too, good toons and had mass crowd appeal. I was expecting SU to be spectacular because of the hype around the Bayou Classic blah, blah, blah,, but i'm gonna flat-out tell you,, just from that one time observation I would have to give JSU the nod in all phases over SU, even the dancing dolls vs the j-settes. yeah, the dancing dolls did meet/surpass expectations, but the j-settes was just off the hook man, oh my fckuing goodness.
As an unbiased outside observer, JSU freaking rules is the last impression I have of these bands going head-to-head, but that's a dated impression.
