Whites In JSU et al HBCU Bands

Your point as related to the topic is......

I guess what else we know? That SU originally played 'Get Ready' before JSU...
Just thought I would mention it since you forgot to say it this time.

That's why I said :topic: ..But did you know Blake? The dude could play..

Bullisht........

The fact that Duplessis and Adams went to Southern doesn't mean we copied anything... Duplessis was at SU before Greggs came and Adams never served as a director at SU... The adagio step and tiger run-on didn't come from Baton Rouge. And the stereophonic sound certainly didn't.... Let's face it, Adams was the best thing outta Southern back then, and he landed at JSU... And that's why most of the Boom tunes back then ran circles around anything the 'S' came with... It had to be nearly impossible to out-arrange Taylor, (Russell) Thomas AND Adams........

And Taylor didn't copy anything from SU.... Didn't need to....

The distinction between the two bands were way more evident THEN than NOW anyway...

Man, people will get on this muah-phugga and TYPE anything....... :shame:

... T-made.. sorry but um..

Well since this has morphed into a JSU vs SU slobber-knocker, must weigh in as an unbiased observer/spectator (with 11 years band experience, 6 corps-style, 5 HBCU style by the way).

I saw SU a couple times a year from 87 to 91 while living in DFW. I had to give the nod to PV in those clashes back then and a few to SU. SU was awesome in the stands. Later when I moved back to Alabama, I went to the first SCG in Birmingham, JSU vs Southern. In a head-to-head contest on that day, as an independent observer, to me it was JSU, no contest. SU was solid, good tunes, but JSU was solid too, good toons and had mass crowd appeal. I was expecting SU to be spectacular because of the hype around the Bayou Classic blah, blah, blah,, but i'm gonna flat-out tell you,, just from that one time observation I would have to give JSU the nod in all phases over SU, even the dancing dolls vs the j-settes. yeah, the dancing dolls did meet/surpass expectations, but the j-settes was just off the hook man, oh my fckuing goodness.

As an unbiased outside observer, JSU freaking rules is the last impression I have of these bands going head-to-head, but that's a dated impression. :D

Also as an unbiased observer, other than the J-Settes performance, Southern was clearly the best band that day. JSU had the guys taking off their shirts to "It's Raining Men" and a dancing Santa humping the ground. You could barely hear JSU on the field, Southern's sound was awesome! The only problem I saw with Southern's performance, was mic problems when the guy was singing "Reasons" by EWF, Southern was clearly the best band day that day. In 2000 the Sonic Boom re-invented itself; they were a completely different band in 2000. I?ll give JSU the W against Southern in 2000, but not 1999.
