When did this intense Jackson State-Southern rivalry began? JSU-SU Old Heads help!

Re: When did this intense Jackson State-Southern rivalry began? JSU-SU Old Heads hel

Where did this old azz thread come from?

I remember it well LB.....:D

That's the game where SU bandsmen tried to say we used a cassette when actually it was pure Patrice Moncell.....Live and in Color!!!
Stag, remember the saying, "Is it live or is it Memorex!"

Also, you remember when Wavey Davey laid down in front of the SU band golf cart on the track and made him drive around him...everybody :lmao:
.
.
.

Yeah, in 1983 SU blew the heyal out of us in Memorial..:shame:

Still  @ "Soul Train".

But the difference is the rivalry was competition instead of total dissing another program. When we left the game, that's where the rivalry ended...

STC it really sounded like alot of fun especially compared to things today. I can sort of visualize what you and Stag are saying.

Yeah 83 was just one of the many reasons ole JR headed to Baton Rouge from Jackson. Raid and Real Love at halftime was unbelievable. The Jukebox put on a concert on the field and the whole JSU crowd was going crazy. It all started with SU putting 17-0 on the field and it was the first time Jackson folks saw the famed circle drill. Hearts to Heart by EWF. Soul Train did make folks :scared:

Also in 82 I think I saw the tape of the SU vs JSU battle in BR. It was at the Memorial Stadium in BR instead of on campus and both bands sat on the same side if I am not mistaken. Mumford was under renovation at the time I believe. The Boom was blowing Knights by Night that year. I think my memory is correct on that one.

You are right about the rivalry. It was not like it is now. It got intense during the 80s but it was very respectful and it was over after halftime. BR and Jackson both liked seeing both of these bands battle. I do think the JSU crowd is more anti Jukebox now or anti SU now since SU football got good in 93 when Pete arrived. Before it was just another beatdown for SU at the hands of JSU. Since 93 it aint been like that. Still can hear the JSU crowd telling SU folks to go home after the game this year. That never happened back in the day. Times have changed I guess. I do think the band battles between the 2 are not as good as they used to be. Let me run out this thread before the newer school than us come a posting.

SLT, it really sounded like alot of fun especially compared to things today. I can sort of visualize what you and Stag are saying.

It was a great experience NastyD. One I wouldn't change for the world. We would get together with other bands before and after the game(especially with TXSU and SU) and have a good time. Now at gametime it was war, but that's where we left it....at the stadium....:)

I don't know if they do it now, but back then a few band members would even go over after halftime and meet with the other band. Mostly it was KKY/TBS members who would go over.

Don't remind me of 84..........:argue: LOL.

Yeah you are right. 81 was Knights by Night because our frat Kevin Handy arranged it for us at Callaway his Sr year and my Soph year in HS. He is SPR83 so that makes sense. 16 POPPS is 83's line name isn't it?

Stag and Bengal E are gonna cuss me out! :swink:

1984 was alright to me....*shrugs shoulders* Maybe I was spoiled by Haughton and wasn't ready to do it like Taylor........:smug: :)

But I really enjoyed ya'll version of 'Sexual Healing' in 1984....
I find myself sometime now marching around the house and swaying my head side to side pretending I'm playing that song and marching like the Juke!

Yeah because I remember when I was little boy and came to one of the JSU vs SU games and I think that was 90 and it was still crunk then right on down to the cheerleaders. Now it seems that none of the bands respect each other anymore. It was waaaaaaaaaaaaay more energy then than what I see now from all bands. Fieldshows, dance routines, dancing girls and all use to be off the chain. Now you really dont get that at all. I am apart of that new school group and I just dont see it anymore and thats just being real. I remember when my parents use to purchase the tickets to the games and you would come out feeling like you had gotten your moneys worth and then some. Now its almost like you come out of the game saying, I could have stayed at home for this. What do you think happened.

Re: When did this intense Jackson State-Southern rivalry began? JSU-SU Old Heads hel

What do you think happened.

Leadership.

I understand the times have changed, but as far as the tradition of JSU .....the leader is failing to uphold it. And you would think that wouldn't be the case simply because he was there to witness it for himself.

But mark my words, it will one day return..

Are you in the Boom presently?

Re: When did this intense Jackson State-Southern rivalry began? JSU-SU Old Heads hel

No, decided to leave the band alone after high school due to the college I first attended then I came back home and went to JSU.

Gotcha..

Re: When did this intense Jackson State-Southern rivalry began? JSU-SU Old Heads hel

Nope...................It started, as far as mordern times my freshman year in 1982.

We went to Southern for the game and when we got there, we had to dress in dorms and the busses.

When we marched to the stadium, playing as soft as possiable, the people at the gate would not open it because of the crush of people standing there.
We stayed outside that gate through the entire "series" drum cadence which timed out at about 18 minutes back then.

When they open the gate, DURING THE 1st QTR, we bust out as loud as we could, marched right down the HOME SIDE past the Jukebox and Cheerleaders blowing "Get Ready".

We took the crowd that night with Patrice Munsell singing "I'm tellin' you I'm not going".
SU brought out some "skinny" girl and tried the same song.............FLOP.
Everything worked right for the Boom and JSU that night.
We blew out the Jukebox and the team blew out the Jags.

I don't think the Jukebox was over that when they came to Jackson the following year in 1983.
They blew our arse out of Memorial from the minute we marched in.
It's been on every since although it has died down, IF YOU CAN IMAGINE NEWBIE's, a lot since then.

Now to me it was 1975 in Jackson when the JUKEBOX marched in Jackson playing Get Ready, and our DM did the full backbend..At halftime Marvin played an solo to JSU side..Marvins dad was the BD at JSU.. ..JSU fan's went WILD..The boom never saw it coming, and it took years for them to get over it..
BTW I was born in 1957

Re: When did this intense Jackson State-Southern rivalry began? JSU-SU Old Heads hel

#596......

Re: When did this intense Jackson State-Southern rivalry began? JSU-SU Old Heads hel

Well, since ery'body's giving their birth year, I was 'bone' in '70......

It's nearly impossibe to pinpoint the EXACT time and place the SU/JSU rivalry started. Everybody's told stories of what happened when and how it turned out and who got who...

I'd have to say it must've been '78 (or '79), when Haughton/Duplessis went into '4 circles' and drilled to the Isley Brother's 'Harvest For The World'... They had just changed from the JSC formation to the JSU. That drill was PERFECTION....

But I think the 'watershed' moments for the rivalry came in '88, '89 and the climax in '90. The '88 Boom was laying bands out with Vanessa Williams' 'The Right Stuff'. And nobody had an answer for the J-Settes and Wavy Dave AND the Boom...... But the Boom's arrogance got crushed in '89 when the Jukes unloaded 'Skin I'm In' in Memorial.... Even the Boom members (then) admitted that isht was on another level......

But not to be outdone, Taylor, Duplessis, Adams and Gregory loaded up that MONSTA and went to Baton Rouge in '90 and you know all what happened.... If you close your eyes even now, you can hear SU's crowd singing Toni, Tony, Tone's "It Feels Good'. They were singing almost as loud as we were playing. And the J-Sette tune.... "Rub You The Right Way'..... After the drum break.... AWESOME......
And the Rebirth Brass Band's "Do Watcha Wanna' for the closer?????? I don't think there's been a more complete Boom show since......

But the Jukes were up to the task.... They followed us with Janet Jackson's 'Black Cat' and they were cranking on that thang!!! They're whole show was precise and on point!!!

That game would've gone down as the greatest battle (until this year), until the clowns started shooting on SU's side (and the Jukes wound-up leaving early)....

I wish there was a way for everybody who was in both bands (then) could meet-up in Mumford TODAY and battle (from memory)........ :D:D

Man, with all this talk about late 70s and early 80s, it's make me think one thing... ya'll are really old. :D
In 1982, I was in the first grade and was missing my two front teeth.

Dude I remember that like it was yesterday!!! It was the SH!T, and I'm a die hard jaguar but had to give JSU the W that night. I was a crab at SU in '91 and we got some get back, but that 90 show with Do Watcha Wanna had people say JSU sent spies to see what the jukebox was gonna do so that they could go on and do it first. CLASSIC

STC it really sounded like alot of fun especially compared to things today. I can sort of visualize what you and Stag are saying.

That day was off the hook for us.
That was probably the best time I had as a BOOM member on game night.

In fact, down in that corner they alway's stuff us in, the SU fan's behind us, they were older, straight talkers, told the drum and tuba section that was right up against them if we outdid the JUKEBOX at halftime, they would supply "drink's" for us the entire 2nd half.

Like I said.................Straight up people.:emlaugh:
Man..................Me, Bengal E, Terry B, Baby Woo, Rod, Gigalo Jed got drunk after half time.
Them SU fan's kept feeding us that oil.
