When did this intense Jackson State-Southern rivalry began? JSU-SU Old Heads help!

Band was on another level back? Please explain why.....

The big difference is YOU all had directors back then that new each other....and since they were hype, you all of course feed off of their hypness.....

You must realize being at SU, in the mid 90's to now....all of DOC friends are pretty much dead.....So he don't wanna go to war with none of these other bands....but that don't stop us from being ready as a band. Now it do stop creativity, because every time we came up with some creative stuff DOC was there to shot it down.....DOC wanted to be comfortable....sheed he no one to prove himself to.....So that in turn effected the band. We still did what we had to do, but if the head man wasn't feeling a battle, there wasn't going to be a battle.

Only way it will chance is when band directors actually start talking to each others again, and building some kind of bond, then the isht talking will start again between the BD's and the rest will follow from there....

I mean we can talk all the isht we want to on here, but the band members ain'ty about to make DOC stay no where he don't want to stay....
These statements are very interesting indeed. I'm trying to put myself in Dr. Greggs shoes. I guess it's like going to school with a bunch of kids that you can't relate to because your day was yesterday and their time is now. Where is the motivational drive if you can't relate to someone on the intellectual and musical level you are on? I don't know if these new band directors deal with one another or not. I do know that Dr. Greggs and Dr. Pannell stay in touch with one another. Here too,... things today are a little different. Never did I hear Mr. Hutchinson trash the name of any of his counterparts. I know he and Dr. Greggs was good friends but, bitter rivals on the Grid. There is a difference in the two and perhaps that's part of the problem today.

Don't misread us old heads. The reality is that the expectations that we have of today's bands are much higher. The instruments are better, there is more private instruction, technology is far superior, and the aptitude of today's students SHOULD BE higher than it was in our day. Its just like a parent setting a higher bar for his children than he had for himself. Is that the right approach? I happen to think so.

Bang!!!! Now that's a major point. I dare not add anything to it.

I wonder how many college/university BD's actually participate in the national music conferences and symposiums (giving the SWAC BD's and opportunity to assemble)...or even the statewide level.
I was just talking to a band director today who knows a great deal about SWAC Band history. I was told that they have a conference every year or so to meet and somewhat fellowship. I was told it was mostly about the business of music. There's a picture floating around somewhere with all of them in it. I was told that there are certain band directors that get along and there are some who are kicking against the grain trying to get an identity for themselves through rebellion. This unhealthy mentality starts manifesting itself in the students. Then you start wondering why an assistant BD would cut the chords to the opposing band's mics. People can be funny but, I'm pretty sure those legendary band directors left the bitter battle on the grid and respected their counterpart's creativity even if they did get waxed. Mr. Hutchinson use to say all the time that competition is healthy. Perhaps today bitter competition between rival schools have lost it's mutual competative respect and has gottin' down right personal.

That was just plain "ignant" whoever did this!!

That's why today ,...you have bands that get along even though they talk a lot of trash Right Southern ????
And you have bands that today's band director don't want the students to get too close to when lining up for half time.

:shame:
I've seen bands(today) perform first and then leave the sidelines on a cadence when the other band was taking the field. This is definitely as the result of the director informing his members to do so. We were always taught to kneel on the sidelines and wait until the other band is coming off the field.

I can understand people talking trash, but deliberately degrading another's craft causes nothing but friction between black college bands. Everybody is NOT on the same level musically. The difference should be respected.

Under Mr. Hutchinson,...we never took a knee. I believe he put us back in the stands to get us out of the way and not for fear of a fight.

This rivalry happened when both bands realized that they were the 2 best in the SWAC.

It's just like a Band SuperBowl. When you have 2 of the best playing against one another, there is bound to be a rivalry at some point.

However, I do feel that JSU will put it on SU at this Band SuperBowl.;)

The JSU/SU isn't as competitive as it was in the 1980's to 1990. Today, everyone knows before halftime who the winner be, Southern, you couldn't make a predication twenty years ago; you had to wait after halftime.

Whoa! Are you tryin to start something in here?

Re: When did this intense Jackson State-Southern rivalry began? JSU-SU Old Heads hel

I heard it started in 1984, when Dowell Taylor assumed the position as JSU's band director, like Greggs, Dowell Taylor was very competitive, he didn't copy other bands, he wanted to be the trend setter, Greggs noticed what Taylor was doing at Jackson State and the rivalry become intense, is this true?

Nope...................It started, as far as mordern times my freshman year in 1982.

We went to Southern for the game and when we got there, we had to dress in dorms and the busses.

When we marched to the stadium, playing as soft as possiable, the people at the gate would not open it because of the crush of people standing there.
We stayed outside that gate through the entire "series" drum cadence which timed out at about 18 minutes back then.

When they open the gate, DURING THE 1st QTR, we bust out as loud as we could, marched right down the HOME SIDE past the Jukebox and Cheerleaders blowing "Get Ready".

We took the crowd that night with Patrice Munsell singing "I'm tellin' you I'm not going".
SU brought out some "skinny" girl and tried the same song.............FLOP.
Everything worked right for the Boom and JSU that night.
We blew out the Jukebox and the team blew out the Jags.

I don't think the Jukebox was over that when they came to Jackson the following year in 1983.
They blew our arse out of Memorial from the minute we marched in.
It's been on every since although it has died down, IF YOU CAN IMAGINE NEWBIE's, a lot since then.

Re: When did this intense Jackson State-Southern rivalry began? JSU-SU Old Heads hel

the "REAL"" rivalries DID NOT start till these Internet Band Forums started up!!!!!!!!

Went people caught word abot Swac Fans.com, swacpage, 5th Quarter and Marching Sports word went quick...

Then the EGO's flew!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JSU vs SU..................
Both of them saying stuff like....

Your band AINT shat!!!!
Your band is garabage......
Your Band is living off the Legacy of your former Band Director
Your Band is lazy!!!
Your Band needs more music.......
Your band is walking instead of marching

ETC..ETc..Stuff like that.....................

Dayum! Did the Jukebox start blowing back when the Boom started marching towards them? The 1982 Boom was no joke!

They couldn't, (or would not).
The game had already started.:lmao:

By the time they opened that gate and got all the people out the way, WE DIDN'T GAF bout penalties or anything.
All I know is the JSU Fans and Football team went off when we did that. :lmao:

We were ready to clown and did.
The funniest part was that the only people that knew we were out there were the people standing in the crowd next to us.

When we kicked the "series" back off and hit the roll off, SU Fan's at the front nearly had heart attacks.:lmao:

Credit that sneek attack to Haughton and Papa Dup.
They told the drum section when we marched past SU's bandhall to play as soft as possiable.
Word had got out that the BOOM was not comming.

Where did this old azz thread come from?

I remember it well LB.....:D

That's the game where SU bandsmen tried to say we used a cassette when actually it was pure Patrice Moncell.....Live and in Color!!!
Stag, remember the saying, "Is it live or is it Memorex!"

Also, you remember when Wavey Davey laid down in front of the SU band golf cart on the track and made him drive around him...everybody :lmao:
.
.
.

Yeah, in 1983 SU blew the heyal out of us in Memorial..:shame:

Still  @ "Soul Train".

But the difference is the rivalry was competition instead of total dissing another program. When we left the game, that's where the rivalry ended...
