SUtrp96 said:Adran where did ANYBODY say HALF-ARSE your show?
H3ll the bands that is getting HOUSE AIN'T even doing drill... to me they are HALF-ARSING their shows nowadays just for the hope of some cheap house.
Devil's Gun Trigger Man said:i... Alot of it has to do with creativity also. Halftime shows have almost gone the was of the slam dunk. After so long you just get immune to it. How many different ways can u march on a field, drill, go to concert formation, let girls dance, go to block band, band dance and come off the field...
dacontinent said:And that is EXACTLY what made me fall in love with CORPS STYLE marching. You drill from the time you enter the field until you exit. You even drill when the dancers are being featured. Creativity is never lost because something is ALWAYS moving and being formed.
I will be quite honest with you: Most HBCU halftime shows bore me because I know what is going to happen before the band hits the field.
SUtrp96 said:If that's the case you were never really impressed with SU or JSU in the 80's or 70's.....

Frankly, any program worth it's salt understands that you're in performance mode the minute you put the uniform on and march into the stadium until you march out of the stadium and take your uniform off...
That goes for field shows, 5th Quarters, Football/Game Support, etc....Everything you do in that uniform you do with your best foot forward...Every aspect of your performance is important; You should be just as razor sharp for an on-field performance at halftime as you should for 5Q Battle and Vice versa...
Frankly, that's the one element that's missing from alot of our ensembles collectively in this day and age...It's all important; You should be prepared to effectively split some bands wig back to the fat meat regardless of the circumstances...:smash:
jag4life said:When did SU's DMs conduct on the field? When has SU ever had a 1.5 minute DM routine?
PVJAGUAR said:a good band can have 5 minutes and show out...things are not how they use to be so learn to adjust and do your thing...and why is the Bayou Classic Battle of the Bands so successful?? GSU/SU do no field show and get thousands to watch..and just like stated before we should be good all around no excuses..
the band fan said:problem now is that you look at the old tapes...bands almost always went over 10 minutes and gave you a full show. When they started enforcing the 10 minute rule, the little things to make a band stand out went by the wayside.
TBone2 said:Is the 10 minute rule a SWAC or NCAA rule?
Interesting!!!S.U. T-BONE 99 said:The reason people place so much emphasis on the stands is because now field shows are rushed. You don't get too much time to get the crowd to groove with what you're doing. Also, a lot band directors cut out the creativity with the halftime shows. Band members got tired of doing the same shows, although executed to a T, its out of the control of the students. See the difference between bands back then and bands now is that bands before had time to satisfy what the director and the students but with a shorter time limit on the filed who do you think will win the battle when it comes to deciding what a band does on the field. If bands had more time you would see the creativity level come back up for halftime.
 Boy!!!! This is some good read!!!!dacontinent said:A band can surely show out in 5 minutes, but I rather doubt that they can impress unless they are spending an incredible amount of energy. 320 steps per min is cool when sustained for more than a minute. Playing immediately after completing that minute is impressive. Playing WHILE executing the steps would be phenomenal (and nearly impossible). Dancing and playing at the same time is impressive when the sound does not suffer.
The Bayou Classic Battle of the Bands format works because it is all about in-your-face one-upsmanship. It is the same thing the battling big bands of Ellington, Basie, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and Chic Webb did back in the 1940's. Turn the fans loose and let them go away thinking that they decided who won while the bands assess each other and determine who really won while collecting all of that really nice revenue. With all of the excitement of the evening, the fans leave impressed to spread the fame so when the bands go out individually the crowds still show up en masse. It is truly Barnum & Bailey's Finest.
There are plenty of marching bands around the country who hold two-hour warm-up/concerts before each home that draw 5K-10K people EVERY game. In addition to all of the above, the real focus is to recruit prospective students.

Bands today do not practice as long and hard as they use to in my time. Society is more complexed and demanding. More output is required with less time for preparation. You can't work today like those bands did back then. Todays world with all it's demands will not allow it.
ZNSPR8502 said:The issue here is bands don't bring fans to a fanatic level any more. Once you get that high from a crowd, there is no comparison to field. The field can be very humbling also - you think you got a kick a** show and all you get is popcorn claps. Yeah, you love the stands more then. But, if it is done right, the field is the cake. The stands is the icing, candles, etc... It all matters, but non of it matters without the cake (the halftime show). No gratification is greater than that of 25,000-70,000 fans all hollar and cheering for what you are doing and continuing to do so has you walk off or march off past them on the sideline. Oh yeah, the field is the real deal - not to lessen the importance of the role of the stands because we worked our butts off for both.
Peace...
