William Davis - Big Band Sound

Dowell Taylor - JSU Rocks The House, Showtime & Awesome Sound & Arrangements

I was just wondering, what has Dr. Liddell added to the Sonic Boom?

Here's four...
-Inducted into the NCAA Hall of Fame (1 of only 3 Black College Bands)
-Appearance at the NAACP Image Awards
-The band has almost doubled in size
-Nationally Recognized Symphonic Band (1 of the only HBCUs with a serious Symphonic Band)

Now I don't argue that Liddell is the greatest band director in JSU history. There are somethings that he could do that he doesn't do, but he's still a good director...and a excellent musician. point blank.

Couldn't have said it better. Also, every director adds their flavor and will be untouchable in a sense. Liddle, along with Dr. Magruder help to bring the clarinet section as well as the woodwind section standards up as a whole.

I don't know the whole story...nor, the in's and out's of this one....

...but, can you really chalk this one up to Lidell? Yea...he was there at the time....but, how much of the actual feat is on Lidell?

Sorry, I was speaking in reference to halftime performances, not awards and accolades.

Who is the third black band in the hall of fame?

Grambling was the first

JSU

Is FAMU the third black band?

Exactly, I think Liddell has really worked extra hard to keep the legacy of the "Sonic Boom" alive.

The legacy of the "Sonic Boom"...

I don't know Dr. Liddell and have never had any dealings with him. However, I have made no bones about not appreciating the direction that the Boom has taken musically. Since I don't know him, I might just be ignorant. So, I have a request of you who have been in the program during Dr. Liddell's tenure.

Describe the legacy of the Boom for me and help me to understand how Dr. Liddell has kept it alive. Heretofore, the MUSICAL legacy of the Boom was the Big Band sound and lush arrangements that began with the artwork of SIVAD...It was the thing the set the Boom apart from all of the other bands in the SWAC. The things that Haughton and Taylor brought to the table enhanced and built upon the foundation that had already been laid. I don't hear that any more, and it bothers me. So, please, help me to understand.

The Big Band sound is what I miss the most also. Prairie View and FAMU are two bands that remind me the most of that sound that JSU had under Davis, Haughton and Taylor.

No disrespect intended, but part of the reason you may not like some of the sound of the new Boom is that you may or may not like the sound of the new hip-hop, r&b songs that are out. If you are looking for any band to truely have that "big band" sound you are going to have a hard time finding it. Popular music has truely changed. The musicality of of the songs made by Earth, Wind, and Fire and Stevie Wonder and countless others sounds a lot different than songs made today, which are more "hip-hoppish". The arrangements are more simplistic because the songs are more simplistic. Compare a Lil Jon produced song like "Yeah" to a Earth, Wind, & Fire song like Getaway or Stevie Wonder's Sir Duke. The sound of today's music is more aggressive and powerful than that of the past, that's a large part of the reason why the song's are more aggessive and powerful these days and less "musical".

But as to what Liddell brings has done to enhance the legacy I will say this, despite what you may agree or disagree with musically, but he has kept the program strong and growing. He may not be the most dynamic figure ever to lead the Boom, or the most creative, but he has continued the legacy of excellent bands that was in place before he got there and will leave the program in probably the next 5 - 10 years in very good shape.

YEAH YEAH YEAH.....That's all well and good, but will he be able to save the BOOM from the Drunken Homecoming crowd in Pine Bluff????

Probably not...

But perhaps...

I guess you forgot who your daddy is. It was less than 10 years ago that your directors and officials were on our campus humbly seeking how to build a program. We are your role model. The concept of how your program was built. We at Jackson State are very proud of the development and improvement of our child UAPB. But just like any father, every now and then you have to bring your child back to reality. Keep talking, it might be that time.

Actually,

The development of SWAC Bands is an on going process...

Are not like they used to be, in fact, Dr. Liddell personal vendetta for M4's Director Prof. Graham was realized in 2000. That forum you so aptly mentioned, was for directors to get a better understanding of WHEN and WHEN not to play during the game. JSU made that necessary for y'all are notorious for playing during a quarter with a certain song (The Show, 3rd quarter), in no penalties were called. Furthermore, it was a waste of time, because the Boom still does it.

Nope, wrong baby. I'm not talking about some forum in 2000. I'm talking about when you're leadership themselves came to Jackson State's campus around '95, '96 to get pointers and take notes on the band program itself. I know this happened because I was their at the time. They observed, met with directors and other leadership, and basically used that model to begin the improvement of their own program. That's your history baby. In using the Bible terms, "We begat you." :p Or at the least were a model for you guys to start your improvement. At the time you guys were about 50 deep at the most. Truthfully, I'm glad to see you guys improving and doing better.

As for whatever forum happened in 2000, that's not knew, people have always complained about that. They complained because often times that song and others like it sparked our football team and our crowd, giving the stadium momentum for numerous comebacks or blowouts, not very many recently though. :p In short, we didn't care if we upset other teams or fans, we were there to whip our team and our fans into excitement. People got upset because their bands and their fans couldn't do anything but sit there and wait until we finished. And if somehow our football team is winning in the 3rd or 4th quarter Saturday, you will probably see and hear it again.

Dude what u don't understand is that those 3 bands u mentioned could be on their worst year and still be light years ahead of Pissy Bluff.
