TUSKEGEE ? It seems
to be one hurdle after
another for the Tuskegee
football team this season.

After overcoming a protest
by Morehouse College, the Golden Tigers were finally named as
Southern Intercollegiate Conference champions and awarded an
invitation to the Pioneer Bowl Saturday in Atlanta?s Georgia Dome.

Now, the Golden Tigers are trying to get the respect they feel they
deserve from the polls. They feel they deserve to be black college
national champions for the second straight year.

In order for Tuskegee to repeat as national champions, it must find a
way to jump Grambling State in the polls. That may require a big win
over Virginia Union, the CIAA champion, this weekend.

GSU, which defeated Alabama State in the SWAC championship game
on Dec. 8, already has finished its season at 10-1. But the Golden
Tigers feel they?ve already done enough to be ahead of Grambling.

?I think that we?ve proven that we are the best team,? Tuskegee head
coach Rick Comegy said. ?I would just like the committee that votes on
this to take a good look at what we?ve done this season.?

What the Golden Tigers have done is go 10-1 and win the SIAC
championship. They also beat Alabama State, which handed Grambling
its only loss during the regular season.

At the time they beat ASU, the Golden Tigers were ranked second in
the Sheridan Black College poll, and the Hornets were third. Both were
behind Grambling, which moved back into the No. 1 spot only two
weeks after the loss to ASU.

Grambling?s win in the SWAC title game seems to have secured its
spot at the top of the poll.

However, after that championship game, ASU players and coaches
were split on who should be No.1. Alabama State quarterback Darnell
Kennedy said he felt that Tuskegee was the better team because his
Hornets didn?t beat the Golden Tigers. However, ASU head coach L.C.
Cole said he thought Grambling was the better team because they had
the better athletes and played a tougher schedule.

Comegy said he appreciated the comments from the players, but didn?t
understand the comments from Cole.

?I don?t understand what coach Cole was saying,? Comegy said. ?I don?t
see where having better players has anything to do with it. Are they
more deserving because they?ve got 63 scholarships and we?ve only got
36? I always thought it was the 22 that?s on the field that made the
difference.?

Comegy said that Cole?s analogy slighted the role he played in the
Golden Tigers? season.

?What about coaching and getting the players motivated to win??
Comegy said. ?Doesn?t that have anything to do with it? Do we just
throw all of that out the door because they?ve got more scholarships
and, therefore, have more athletes??

Comegy said his team?s schedule was just as tough as a SWAC
schedule.

?Everyone?s saying that we don?t play anybody,? he said. ?Well, take a
look at the SWAC. What really tough teams are in there. Past the
upper echelon teams, it?s really not a very strong conference. Look at all
the coaching changes that have gone on in Division I-AA this year.
That?s because teams aren?t very good.?

Comegy also noted that in his team?s only loss of the year ? a 14-3
defeat vs. Morehouse ? the Golden Tigers were forced to play without
injured starting quarterback Aaron James for the first half.

?We didn?t have our starting quarterback in that game against
Morehouse,? he said. ?It?s not like we were beaten badly or anything.
We gave up one touchdown on a blocked kick and couldn?t get anything
going on offense without Aaron.?

Comegy said if his team wins Saturday?s Pioneer Bowl they should be
the clear No. 1.

?I think that after everything we should be,? he said. ?It?s not my
decision, but I think we deserve a good look.?

He says the 22 on the field are all that should matter, yet he gets upset with Coles because he says GSU has the better players. That is called contradiction. "I don't understand whjat Coles was saying" I do....he was saying that we are better than you. Deal with it.

"what abut coaching and getting the players motivated" I guess Doug having a bulls eye on his back this season didn't mean anything. Having your team ranked #3 in the nation was a farce to huh? This dude is sad, stop whining man.

And come on man, you want me to believe that TU played as tough a schedule as GSU. You played Bama St........that was the only ranked team you faced. We played Portland, ASU, JSU, SU, and were it not for Bin Laden, FAMU. All teams who were ranked in 1-AA this season. Plus a decent Nichols team........and this dude wants to talk strength of schedule. But he tries to put a hearty spin on it...tis isn't about SWAC vs SIAC. This is about GSU v TU. And you guys loose the strength of schedule battle. Easily. Maybe he can run this crap at some other SWAC foes, but the Grambling schedule speaks for itself.

Fact remains that Comegy has the little man(school) complex. He is like the lil short dude that feels he always has to prove himslef by talking big and saying nothing. Dude, just be happy that you got it last year.

How many times is this dude going to try and pimp the media to get the mythical title. He must have a bonus in his contract or something. He is fighting just a little to hard for this.........
 



If the award means this much to their program, TU can handle this easily in the future. Schedule SU, GSU, JSU, FAMU, TnSU as its non-conference games and everything else will take care of itself.

As a SU fan, I would love to see TU visit Mumford once in a while.

Exactly, he is politicking very hard. (Understand I do not like the notion of voting for a national champ; but that is just me.) I understand it very well. Albeit, if I were him and were going to politic, I would not do it like he is doing. He should remember when Barry Switzer in 1984 and Jimmy Johnson in 1985 went to the media to try to stake their claim very loudly to the number one ranking. Switzer especially complained about BYU being ranked number one in '84. Both of their teams lost by double digits in bowl game, Oklahoma to Washington by 11 and Miami by 35 to Tennessee. Switzer learned his lesson well and kept his mouth shut the next year. The Tuskegee coach should learn that lesson the easy way.

BTW let us not forget about BYU and their talked of a suit before playing Hawaii. :lmao:

Let me go on record as saying that I feel that Grambling should be No. 1. I also think they should have been No. 1. last year, despite two losses.

But don't be too shocked if Tuskegee is successful in duping those Sheridan clowns for another title.

I agree with you that GSU should be #1. They played a tougher schedule and they have better players. Comegy didn't play but one tough team all year and that was Bama State as stated above. He needs to get a life and stop whining. Schedule GSU, JSU, Bama State and SU next year, and see how many games you will win..........
 
Duece.....I wouldn't be surprised if Comey is able to pimp the Sheridan poll....but if that happens, I will loose the small amout of respect I have for the Sheridan poll . But a win ove Virgina Union does not give TU any edge over Grambling. And I admit, I am biased towards my team, but i am also a football fan and not one of Comegy's arguments hold any weight when it comes to TU v GSU! Not caliber of talent, not strength of schedule, not coaching ability, not records. He has no argument. This guy is trying to argur TU v. SWAC, when the battle is TU v. GSU. And TU looses this battle on all fronts.

These look like excuses. He must have been hanging around with Tigerpride. Stop crying dude. I have never seen a coach cry like this. Hell injuries are a part of the game. Basically this statement invalidates his entire argument. Hell if that is the case, we could say we lost with our back up QB and only loss by seven. But that means nothing. th efact is that you lost!

Hell.....you talkin bout Skegee scheduling SU,GSU,JSU,etc., they caint even handle AAMU! The last time we played them....'99(I believe), we thrashed they arses..som like 53-0, and they came into that game undefeated(5-0 or som).

They aint played us since:lmao:
 
It has to be a situation where Comegy gets a bonus if Skegee is voted the national champion. There's no other reasonable explanation for some of his comments.

Let that coach alone! He will not schedule any top ranking teams like, SU, JSU, or GSU. I mean, let him vent. We all do....sometimes. But, I do admit. He does sound alittle like "Georgie Puddin Pie". :emlaugh:

You, know if you want to be considered every year - you need to change that weak @ss non-conference schedule. He do not have the heart to schedule SU, GSU, JSU, FAMU or TnSU.

The Dakota Indian tribal wisdom says that when you discover you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount. However, in life we often try other strategies with dead horses, including the following:

1. Buying a stronger whip.
2. Changing riders.
3. Say things like, "This is the way we have always ridden this horse."
4. Appointing a committee to study the horse.
5. Creating a training session to increase our riding ability.
6. Comparing the state of dead horses in todays environment.
7. Change the requirements declaring that "This horse is not dead."
8. Hire contractors to ride the dead horse.
9. Harnessing several dead horses together for increased speed.
10. Declaring that "No horse is too dead to beat."
11. Providing additional funding to increase the horse's performance.
12. Do a Cost Analysis study to see if contractors can ride it cheaper.
13. Declare the horse is "better, faster and cheaper" dead.

If all that "hot-air" is acknowledged by the folks who vote in the Poll then the poll needs an upgrade. The point-total is close(26pts), but look at the 1st place votes....(28) vs. (2). If the pollsters change just because of his "poor-mouthin", they probably need to find something else to do.

I know I'm biased, but I wonder why we haven't heard more from the Skegee folks who frequent our SWACPAGE?
 
We probably haven't heard from them becuz they are a bit embarrassed by Comegy's whining. It's really sad that he's openly campaigning for votes.

By his logic, maybe Morehouse should be champion. What about
Fort Valley who won that conference. He needs to concentrate on getting his team prepared to play Virginia Union.

If that is the case, then BCC and NCAT and TSU and SU and JSU and lawd knows who else can stake a claim to that title or any other title.

Comegy is trying to push an improvement in scheduling. It has to be a ruse to get the Div 1AA HBCU powerhouses to sign the dotted line to bring in dollars and recognition. He ain't trying to schedule Troy St. or Georgia Southern. He wants SWAC and MEAC acceptance.

Remember, he would be gearing up to play 3 or 4 tough games all year. Nothing in that sounds unfamiliar. Some of us schedule that way which in turn weakens our conference scheduling strength. He is trying to strengthen his schedule.

I like TU, but I say schedule Tuskegee early in the season, smash em in the mouth if you can and it's a done deal.

There is always one in the bunch....

MAN THAT SOUNDS FAMILAR. BAMA ST. RECORD MAY HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT.

WOULD TUSKEGEE LOSE MORE THAN ONE GAME IF THEY PLAYED IN THE SWAC...YES! WOULD GRAMBLING LOSE IN THAT CONFERENCE...NO! THAT SHOULD SETTLE IT.

I'M A SKEGEE FAN. Here is my opinion just as others have theirs. First of all on Kennedy's comments they may have been 2 reasons for his comments. . He has never beaten Tuskegee in his tenure( i do believe he was out with an injury when ASU won). Secondly it was not said that Tuskegee also won the BAMA STATE game this year with a backup Qb(DUPREE FORMELY OF ASU) who played well for 2 & 1/2 qtrs. Secondly the fact they beat Grambling and Skegee beat them. As for COLES comment that was the PERFECT THING TO SAY HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN LOYAL TO THE SWAC. OTHERWISE EVERY TEAM IN THE SWAC WOULD HAVE THAT ARTICLE ON THE BOARD WHEN SPRING BALL STARTS . I'M NOT SAYING TUSKEGEE SHOULD OR SHOULD NOT BE # 1. If you aren't named BCF National Champs, <b>so what?!?!</b> There are far worse things that could happen to you!! It's not like they are going to fire you and tell you to be off the campus by Christmas morning!!

As far as the SWAC teams and their schedules, <b>Valley played Tennessee State this year!! They played Delta State and they were the defending Division 2 National Champs!! Valley's schedule was tougher than Tuskegee's!!! </b>

Now whose fault is it if you don't have a tougher schedule?!?! <b>Not the SWAC's!!! It's yours!! If you want to be the BCF Champs, improve your schedule strength!!</b> This dude is so sad!!
 
Comegy, should shut his trap and stop crying.

Everyone knows TN State is the undisputed HBCU Champions. We were undefeated in HBCU Competition.:D

Howard University - W 45-0
Miss. Valley State - W41-3
Jackson State -W 64-33

Seriously, we do not care about the Mythical HBCU Championship. Long Live Grambling................

TIGER4LIFE,

Darnell Kennedy did defeat Tuskegee. The year was 1998 and the score was 27-7.

Darnell missed the 1999 season, not 1998.

Secondly, L.C. Cole's comments don't have anything to do with a so-call conference loyalty. Anybody with half a brain knows that Grambling has better athletes, and plays a tougher schedule.

As for the title of the thread . . . get a life.
 
The fact that TnState got the schitt kicked out of them by TnTech eliminates them from serious consideration. Not to say that they are not a good team, but that game was very lopsided to a relatively weak team.

Although GSU lost to Alabama State, we avenged that loss in the SCG. When strength of schedule is considered, GSU gets a huge edge.
