Ah the memories.........Eric Baskin arranged the heck out of that for us......
I posted on another thread how good them Baritones were. Carmen, Ben, Flip, Craig, D Houston, and others were bringing some serious funk.
That was nice..You know Eric Baskin was my crab brother..1975..![]()
Man yall had all the cats. What instrument did Randy "American Idol" Jackson play? Also wasn't Cameo's Charlie Singleton on trombone at that time or were they behind your crab class.
Hey JR, if I recall correctly from my conversation with Charlie Singleton and Randolph Johnson, I believe he was on trumpet also.
Yes, that brought back some memories. Man the tape that came from must have been copied 100 times. Though the view is poor that sound is impeccable. Did you hear that smooth Jazzy ending from "Mr. B."? We always knew he would sign his arrangements with his own unique jazzy ending on every song. The B-tones were so cold until they started gettin' featured every year after Al Jarraeu's "Boggie Down" in 1983. It was great hanging with the great Carmen Garrett at Bayou Classic, the inspiration behind that smoother jazzier funk sound. Talking about placing your feet on the "Sands of Time". Those Forrest Brooks boys took the B-tones to an entirely different level. One that took the Jukebox to another level. Thanks to them coming when the likes of Roy Johnson and Eric Baskins were arranging for the Jukebox. We were all pushed to new levels every year, because they arranged in a way that challenged us to expand and grow. Whew! Thanks again for such a good flashback.
Peace...

:tup::tup:
Wow! I had shamefully forgotten Vince. Randolph, "Rycki", use to tell me about all of those cats including Randy when I was in high school. So, when those cats use to come back for homecoming or some other home game and they use to be so friendly and full of advise, encouragement and support, that use to just add even more Jukebox pride to my daily efforts. Think about it, cats like Vince and Bradford Marsalis who were on TV almost daily, just sitting in the bandroom kickin' it with college students from the country, the projects, urban america and the penthouse without any ego trips or anything. We respected the ole' heads in our day. The bandroom was always open for them to come in, though they may have been closed to guest (those who didn't march in the Juke or wasn't immediate family to the Juke). It is that relationship that had Charlie Singleton going on and on with dialogue with me when Cameo came to Dallas to play a post-game concert for one of our Mavericks Black College Night fundraisers. We got to talkin' about the Juke, Doc, ole' cats like Rycki, etc... The same sort of thing happened when I went to see Wynton Marsalis and Reginald Veal (Bass) and Wes (Sax) recognized me in the audience. After a set, Reg becked me to the stage and asked me if I was who he thought I was and I said yes. So, he said come on back stage man, so we can talk. Just like that, me and the wife were backstage kickin' it with Wynton, Reggie, Wes and the rest of the band.
Yes, the Juke was always one, no matter what year. We are one. The "S" on the chest is the best. Yes!
Peace...
Good flashback, I remember that-of course I was 8 years old, but at the time the seed was being planted.
I remember when I was a Crab Branford Marsalis came down for Alumni Band (homecoming) and gave me the business!!! I was like "How you gonna be harassing me and you on TV everynite?" he said "Cause I still hate crabs!"
I was never star struck again.
LOL. That's Branford. From my understanding, he was a straight fool in the Juke. Hell he gave Doc the business the last time we had an alumni band performance. Ole Bob was directing us. That isht was a blast.
That '91 alumni band was off the chain. They ran Doc into the office. Upperclassmen told all the crabs to leave but I wanted to stay because I had never seen Doc so shaken up!Teral Jackson's son TJ (drum major 96-99) and Jabari were trying to get alumni band together organized again but Mr. J wasn't having it this year. He even had closed rehearsal on Saturday after the parade.
Heck we need to get that started back up......have the black man or Bob come in and direct us. I just like seeing them 70s cats ride Doc. That isht is funny as hell. It would be really nice if my frat Roy Johnson came back to direct an alumni performance. I know that would be off the chain. Roy would have us trying to outdo the regular band.
If it was 86 I was a freshman in HS marching in the LAB Band. I saw this and was![]()
W'sup dude?! I saw your little sister this weekend. I didn't know she was out here.
I remember when yall went back on the field in Shreveport and did that song. I was there!!!!
