There are several good suggestions regarding how a 'super conference' would look. But one question I would ask is this:

Do we rob Peter to pay Paul?

By excluding some schools in favor of adding others, will only further divide an already-fragile state of affairs for HBCU athletics. There's no way a newly-revamped SWAC would survive without a Jackson State, Southern or Grambling. The MEAC would wither without FAMU and a few others. So, would creating a new conference be worth leaving the others behind?

I don't think so. I think Jackson State loses when it leaves Valley and Alcorn behind. What happens to TxSou and PV if/when Southern leaves? What happens to PV and UAPB if/when Grambling leaves? See where I'm going with this?

Creating a new conference out of two conferences is basically an exercise in 'selective realignment', pitting the stronger teams against each other, and leaving the weaker teams to struggle. What does that say for HBCUs?

------------------------------------------------

What I'd like to see eventually happen is this: (and this is me wishing out loud).

I'd like to see the SWAC change it's scheduling format, playing fewer conference games, allowing only the division games to count every year. That way, teams could still play schools in the other division, but it wouldn't create a strength-of-schedule issue that seemingly happens now when teams don't play the same conference schedule (outside the division).

Also, I'd like to see the SWAC (as a conference) market itself to other conferences, negotiating football packages between member schools. Here's my example:

The SWAC approaches the SEC (for instance). With the next few upcoming seasons containing 14 weekends between Labor Day and Thanksgiving, Div 1-A schools will be able to schedule a 12th game. Most schools will schedule a non-conference opponent for the 1st game (around Labor Day) and have that game count sorta like a 'preseason' game. The SWAC approaches the SEC and says that we (SWAC) are willing to play every SEC team in their season-opener for the 2006 season. All the games would be home-openers for the SEC schools. The benefits would be: And extra home game for the SEC schools (helps with season ticket sales). The games would count toward the 6 required for bowl eligibility. The games would be non-conference, allowing teams to 'field test' themselves before confernce play starts. The benefits for us (SWAC) would be: National TV audiences. Nice financial paydays. We would also benefit from a recruiting stand-point. And we'd eventually be competitive enough to have some good games.

Now I know the nay-sayers will say that no payyoff is worth getting our heads beat in, and I'd agree to an extent. I just think the positives would out-weigh the negatives. Besides, most of our schools already play some PWCs in basketball and baseball, so why not football? And I think several PWCs would go for it.

Just a suggestion..

But since we're talking Super Conference, here goes:

The Negro Division:D
FAMU
Alabama A&M
Alabama State or Tuskegee
South Carolina State
NCAT

The Coloured Division:D
Southern
Grambling
Jackson State
Alcorn
TennState

Some Presidents of HBCU are interested in expanding the SWAC or the new SuperConference.

If this is to happened each school will have to agree they will provide the dollars to support the athletic programs. AAMU will be in the mix with any serious talk about a superconference. I know many schools can support this idea, but the problem is will your President support this idea. I know that our President is real interested in FAMU and TnSt joining the SWAC.

It is good to see TnSt is coming back to Huntsville to play AAMU. This is a win win situation for the fans and schools.

First of all opie-Taylor-Made'90 nobody is trying to whore themselves out for a buck.
Playing an sec caliber team is like committing suicide, you should realize that after the J-State vs SMU game(no smack intended)and they didn't win anymore then four games.
What this plan is about is staying within ourselves as HBCU'S, going forward and challenging those who haven't really committed themselves to excellence in athletic.
Even though this topic is completely fictious I find your comments about the negro divison and the colored divison a clear example of what would be our biggest hurdle..."OUR MENTALLITY".
The real facts are that the sec(since you chose them)did this for the same reason, because even with all their exposure and hype they were going to be broke.
So yes it can work but only if we as "Black MEN"start acting like men and stop being afraid to succeed.
Where do you think BCF would be now if Eddie Robinson would have been to afraid to trail blaze?
This is how history is made and countries shape by men who aren't afraid of their own shadow.

Some of yall are in a real dream world, all of this started because Tenn St. needs to be in a better conference than the OVC. So roarman dreams up this superconference thing so Tenn. St doesn't have to do what is obvious, beg to get into the SWAC. NO need to list prospective conference lineups, because it ain't gonna happen. Right now the SWAC has 3 of the highest profile HBCU's with large fan support SU, Grambling, JSU. Add Tenn St to that it makes the SWAC the Premier HBCU conference. And travel in the other sports is still manageable. Untill/unless we find a way to signicantly increase our budgets/money ain't much else going to happen, and money don't grow on trees and wild speculation don't get it.
Tenn. St. the bottom line is you either gotta stay with Ophey, beg the swac to get in (best Move) or beg the MEAC (still a good move) So just dust your knees off and accept it.

OK, Mr. 'I wanna be a big fish in a little pond'....

And the first step in accomplishing anything new, is to open your mind to differing ideas..... And that's all this is.....

And nobody wants anybody to be a 'whore' for a buck. But our schools seem completely willing to 'bend over' for a 'Classic' promoter, but wouldn't want to play a PWC and take a bigger payday. You tell me who the 'whore' and who the 'fool' is.....

The thread was started talking about TennState and what they might try to do. But the focus of the thread has been about HBCU football. And in order to do anything, it takes money. So that's the bottom line. You can have good intentions and ideas out da wazoo, but if you don't have the bucks to back it up, then you're just burning brain cells. In order to be more competitive, it takes money. And there's only so much money that we're gunna get from 'us', so we ought to look at ways and ideas to 'grow' our product and get money from 'them'. And if playing 'them' is a means to an end, then so be it....But to dismiss the idea entirely, is very 'close-minded' if ya ask me....

This is about marketing and strategizing, not protecting little 'fiefdoms'......

If that's truly the case, then why have any disucussion about creating a superconference, where you leave out, or 'weed out' other schools. How do HBCUs benefit from this? 'Cause there's already a pseudo-CLASS system in place now, between the 'HAVES' and the 'HAVE NOTS'.....

Dividing us further, serves nobody...

AGAIN ITS ONLY FICTIOUS...DUH. :smh: :smh: MAYBE THATS WHY?
Besides you and nobody else on this board knows what's really going on at the SWAC office.
