Come on pine bluff and valley? sounds like your trying to make a conf. advantageous to the east.

bluedog,

You missed my point.

My proposal was to eliminate both the Texas schools AND Pine Bluff and Valley. As I stated before, this is about geography.

I haven't read all of the preceeding posts, but I do think that a shake-up of the SWAC and the MEAC is possible, with a new conference being created.

If you were to take the SWAC minus the Texas schools (no offense, I'm strictly looking at geography), Pine Bluff and Valley, and add in Tennessee St., FAMU, NC A&T and possibly Tuskegee, you'd have a pretty good conference.

This sounds good to me.

Alabama A&M
Alabama State
Alcorn State
Florida A&M Univ.
Grambling State
Jackson State
North Carolina A&T
Southern Univ.
Tennessee State
Tuskegee Univ.

Now that's a tight conference.

Well since everybody else is doing it, here's the way i see it

East
  • FAMU
  • SCSU
  • NC A&T
  • TNSU
  • TU
Southeast
  • ALA A&M
  • ASU
  • GSU
  • JSU
  • SU

Damn i made myself out a lie... :goof: oh well
YEAH I KNOW YA'LL FORGOT ABOUT DEM BULLDOGS

Quote:I think the entire thought of TSUU doing this at the 1-AA level is kinda stupid.

TP,

The only way I think this new conference Idea would turn out to be "kinda stupid" is if we didn't take the opportunity to "weed out" the "weaker schools while we had it.

I don't think the Savannah St's of BCF should be included in any discussion of a new conference composed primarily of the HBCU elite.

Has anyone thought of how such a conference would shift the power from the "classic" promoters back to our schools??

Roar man, How would this shift the classic promoters back to our schools? Whatever that even means. I just don't see the logic.

Getting back to the problems at TSU. Yes your biggest problems is your conference affiliation. Most HBCU graduates want to see their schools play other HBCU schools. Look at ASU and Tuskegee: We are both less than an hour away from Troy State but neither of us have ever really been that enthused to play them in any sport. But ASU would easily take 5 thousand to Nashville. I don't think any of your students want to see your OVC games either. The atmosphere is not the same when you are playing a PWC as opposed to a HBCU. I have noticed the lack of support you have received when your OVC games were televised. The road games were bad but the home games looked like a Saturday morning little league game with a big band playing. Which leads to your next biggest problem. You need to get out of Adelphia. As I have said earlier the ugliest football game is one in a big empty stadium. Find a way to renovate your on campus stadium. I have heard from a reliable source that you are paying close to $200 thousand a year for the place and only taking home the gate. I had to pay $5.00 at Grambling and Valley
just for parking. It also gets the alumni back on campus. I know of some ASU graduates who wouldn't miss a football game but haven't been on campus in 2 or 3 years. The more alumni see the campus the more likely they are to give. The thing that helps us is that Crampton bowl is in walking distance of campus. Joining the SWAC or MEAC would do wonders for your attendence and moral. If you can get out of the OVC you need to do so as soon as possible before you loose another generation of athletic supporters.

TP,

What I mean by shifting the "power" from the "classic promoters back to the schools is, as of now the "classic promoter" is able to play school against school. A promoter at present has the luxury of being able to tell our schools..this is the offer..take it or leave it. He realizes that our AD's know that he will only go to the next school that's available. If most of the schools that these classic promoters go after because of their drawing power were in one conference together then we could draw up rules to stop this practice. Maybe the conference could then tell the promoters how much they had to pay instead of it being the other way around.

As a matter of fact I discussed this very issue with the SWAC commish recently.

Here's what he had to say about it:

Thanks for the e-mail. Although I did not attend TSU I have family ties to the university. My father taught in the School of Business from 1979 until 1997. My mother-in-law and father-in-law are TSU graduates and my mother-in-law was the Dean of Students (Gloria Lewis) and finally my brother-in-law and sister-in-law are graduates and my brother received his MBA from TSU. Long story short I understand TSU and its history.

Your observation regarding classics is on point. Money is being left on the table and travel expenses for teams and bands are not being handled correctly. Expansion is a great topic and the SWAC Council of Presidents and Chancellors review the issue every year. The OVC is a solid conference but I understand the interest in competing against other HBCUs. You have a good AD in Teresa Phillips because I know she has TSU?s best interest in mind.

Take Care,

Do not eliminate anyone presently in the conference. All of the schools that we mentioned dropping have long term conference affiliation and are geographically favorable for the north/south format I mentioned earlier. We need a Texas presence, MSVU gives us a clean sweep of the Mississippi HBCU's, and Pine Bluff is geographically favorable for play against GSU, MSVU and has a potential to be a key player.

No, we don't need to drop anyone...Let's build on what we have and unit for common growth.

MikeBigg,

I can see your argument here, But, lets face the facts. This is a different age, different times. We should'nt be letting the "weaker" schools among the HBCU hold the "stronger ones back. If we continue to do this "all" of our schools will continue to be perceived as weak. Do you think" Vanderbilt" would stand a snowballs chance in "L" in getting in the SEC if they were just starting up. "L" NO.

Hey, this is business. I'ts time we HBCU started to run it as one. I say let the "weaker HBCU" do their own thing, While letting the "elites" do theirs.

Several schools for t he past two years has been secretly talking about a new conference. Now, I know everyone is asking, ?if they have been secretly talking. How do you know?
I am glad you ask that question.

Last season I was told by an individual, which was part of the initial planning phase of a new, conference among HBCU, That a new conference is in progress and it would take from three to four years for this to happen. One of the problems is as someone previously mentioned is money. The other problem is facilities and support from their current their current administration. There are only three out of the eight schools that there money in place.

TN State
FAMU
Gram.

I am only going on what I was told.

And thats just it ,what you were told (this isn't smack)but how in the hell can gsu have the money when they were on the verge of losing accreditation?....get real
Having said that they will without any doubt make it clearly because of what eddie robinson have done ,but money they don't have, thats why they travel.

Like i said earlier the only school that get a bigger buget then LSU is SU and they are the only two universities that are self sufficent in the state...facts.

Blue, that's an entirely different matter. Grambling's accrediation had nothing to do with whether we had money, it had to do with how monies and records were kept.

Our athletic department receives a lot of corporate sponsorship and remember the $$$ donated to the Grambling Football program by the Culverhouse family (former owners of the Tampa Bay Bucs) so that Doug would remove the curse (lol). Not trying to boast, but the name Grambling State is very marketable. We get countless offers from promoters seeking to build credibility for their Classics.

We're even in the process of receiving a nice payday from a West Coast school to meet them in the season opener. But if I was AD at GSU, I'd simply open each year in Shreveport and get the game underwritten by the National Alumni Federation and the Eddie Robinson Foundation. You're looking at 40k each year for a season opener with a nice payday for either: FAMU, TnState, Hampton, NC&T, Tuskegee, Howard, etc....

Mike, has your alumni association changed leadership recently?

Whatever happened to your Tiger Foundation?

THE DEAL

Super Conference

East

FAMU
Hampton
NCA&T
SCST
Norfolk St.
BCC

West

S.U.
GRAM
JSU
TNST
TXSU
Bama St.

JROCK,

I would drop Hampton and Norfolk from your proposal, and add Alabama A&M and Tuskegee in the East for geographical reasons.

I would also drop Texas Southern and add Alcorn in the West.

I think the obvious teams in any HBCU SuperConference would be:

1. Tenn St

2. FAMU

3. JSU

4. Southern

5. Grambling

6. AAMU

7. NCAT

8. BCC ?? Without them will FAMU come??

"9. South Carolina St?? Alabama St?? Texas Southern??

I think if you go over nine teams then you almost risk defeating one of the reasons's for devoloping the conference from the beginning. Keeping it at a nine team limit would allow for greater "scheduling flexibility".

Norfolk is one of the largest black universities in the country with a 30,000 seat stadium and has won the commissioners cup in the MEAC recently. Hampton has a great athletic program and proved their worth by advancing in the NCAA basketball tourney. Also, has a very large endownment and a commitment to athletics.

Tuskeege is not ready for a 1-AA move. Bama A&M and TXSU was a struggle for me. I chose TXSU because of the Houston market. Alcorn can keep the SWAC alive. This is a 12 league format and could not include but the elite across the board

Fellows, let's not forget that the only sport that is classified 1-AA is football and all other sports are D-1A. The only 1-AA football school that is not apart of the SWAC or the MEAC is TNState. So, they're the ones that need to find a home. It take the powerful schools in the SWAC and MEAC to give the less powerful schools afloat. It's not their faults that their programs aren't gaining any steam, but they will improve in time. Look at PV in basketball this season..... making progress.

HOW WILL THIS BE MEASURED? WIN & LOSSES, CHAMPIONSHIPS, CONSISTANCY. OVER WHAT PERIOD OF TIME WOULD THIS PROCESS BE JUDGED, THE PAST 10 , 20, 30 YEARS ALL AND I DO MEAN ALL PROGRAMS GO THROUGH UPS AND DOWNS.

MAYBE ICON GRAMBLING SHOULD GO D1AA INDY.

Agree,

This thread has to do more with a premise (super league) and the leagues submitted are hypothetical.

DRShelly,

I don't know if you meant "football school" (as in a school that has a history of, and put emphasis on, football) or "football program", but if you meant football program, for the record, Savannah St. and Mo Brown (if they stay open and field a team) are also I-AA programs.
