Ladies n Gents,

As most of you know my school Tenn State U, is a member of the OVC, after listening to years & years of the TSU supporters crying about this affiliation. The TSU adminisration is about to embark upon a fact finding mission (Conference affiliation study) to put to rest once and for all..all this bickering about what conference TSU should reside in.

As of right now, everythings on the table, maybe the "study" will show we need to seek an alliance with the SWAC, maybe the MEAC would be better, Who knows, it could even say that TSU needs to stay in the OVC.

I'm going to do a little (un-official) speculating here and say my feelings are that TSU will end up doing none of the above.

I think TSU is going to be the catylist that starts up this thing called (realingment) that we've been hearing about.

I think Tenn State's about to become the "cornerstone" for this HBCU SuperConference thing.

I don't see that happenng simply because as always money will be the issue.
Did you not read why A&T decide not to venture into the possibility of going div.2a?
Granted it would have been alone but i see nothing that would change the finacial aspect of this endeavor
Just using SU as an example because i know that the only University in the state that has a bigger athletic budget then us is LSU, its clear by statement from both the a.d. and the coach we aren't ready for that.

No smack intended, but honestly if TSU doesnt do something in the next two years, they will end up being the PV of the OVC... the only thing saving TSU from being the conference doormat in EVERY OVC sport is women's track. Overall football attendence is down, basketball attendence is non existant, basketball team recently lost to FISK. Contovery in the basketball and football programs, everybody pointing fingers and everybody else. I would hade to be in Teresa Phillips shoes right about now.

Wrong. Unlike that proposal of two years ago. This Conference would remain on the 1AA level. Again, this is only speculation on my part. There is nothing (official) coming from TSU as of yet.

You're right DAHILL, it seems for every step forward TSU has made over the last year we've found a way to leap our azz backwards. But life goes on and we will find a way to overcome it all. Teresa is the key, she truly loves TSU and will not leave a rock un-turned in her effort to put TSU back upon top as one of the leaders in the athletic world.

bluedog,

My speculation centers around a 1AA scenario. I don't believe TnSU will entertain the idea of going 1A fb at this time.

I'd like to see Tenn. State in the SWAC. However, the traveling distance to Nashville might be a bit much for some SWAC schools. Maybe they could function as a D-1AA independant until you find the right fit between the SWAC and MEAC. Either way, they should leave the OVC tommorow, if they can.

Without naming any particular schools (I think you'll know who they are) What would be your thoughts on the "elite" of HBCU joining together under one umbrella. Keep in mind though, that the repurcussions of such a move would mean the break up of long standing annual rivalrys for some schools.

Just for the sake of discussion I'll ask this: How would the JSU supporters feel if they could no longer schedule MVSU or Alcorn St on an annual basis?? Would the benifits of belonging in this (hypothetical) Superconference out weigh that.

The only way I'd be for a superconference is if we all decided to move to D-1A together as a group. And that's not happening. What good would it do to have all of the stronger programs in 1 conference and all of the weaker ones in another? Not to mention the travel difficulties and the breaking up of rivalries. You're better off with 2 semi-strong conferences like you have now.

Kool-Aid,

Please allow me to respectfully disagree. For one I think we would need to look at this idea 1'st from a financial aspect. If you think about it most of the "elite" of HBCU is centered around one locality (the south) sure there will be an increase in travel distance for some, but, at the same time there would be a decrease in travel distance for others. One benifit I believe would be derived from such a conference is it would allow for some or even most of our "classic" games to return to our campuses. I also believe this conference would make the HBCU look better to the "blue chip recruit" and also increase the interest from our fans, which in turn, as you know will translate into more dollars from the gates. It also would have the effect of freeing up some of our schedules so that we could play one or two 1A payday games per year. Or in your case you might want to play one of the former rival games that you might have given up. Believe me, the possibillities and benifits of such a conference are almost endless.

The only thing wrong with this scenerio is that you're only looking at it from 1 sport(football). What about the rest of the sports that all these schools have. They are not the tops in those vs football, you must look at the overall picture. This is where the travel restrictions would fall with increase travel budgets for the non-revenue sports. Most of the schools have a good rivalry with the others that don't do so well in football. Do you think that GSU could possibly keep filling the Cotton Bowl without PV. It's a total black college football experience even though the game has been lopsided toward GSU's side. Just to prove that point was the year PV did not have football. The game was not selling too many tickets until they got PV's band to perform halftime. So as you can see these small rivalries put a lot of people in the stands on a consistant basis, you can't take those away and expect the same results.

I would have to disagree with you on that one

First of all there wouldn't be any more then 6 teams to start.

I just don't see any pws giving up the position of strenth in the play-offs

True,

Of course I was looking at football. I think with fb being the "primary revenue source" you have to start with fb and go from there. My belief is, that the increase in revenue derived from such a conference would be more than enough to offset the increases in travel costs. I also believe that the increase in monies would give us the ability to shift more monies towards our basketball programs as well, making them more competitive and self substaining as of now their only eating up the profits derived from fb.

As for the PV GSU game could'nt it still be played as a non-conference game??

btw..The TSU Conference affiliation study will focus on "all sports. Now that "is" official.

THAT WAS NOT A GOOD GAME TO PROVE YOUR POINT!!!

My first thought would be to say screw the pwc's, but, to tell you the truth I can envision some predomitatly white schools in this conference as well. I think we could use their inclusion to boost our RPI for basketball.

MY SCENARIO:

Eight conference members= 7 conference games

2 rivalry or classic non-conference games

2 1A payday games.

I haven't read all of the preceeding posts, but I do think that a shake-up of the SWAC and the MEAC is possible, with a new conference being created.

If you were to take the SWAC minus the Texas schools (no offense, I'm strictly looking at geography), Pine Bluff and Valley, and add in Tennessee St., FAMU, NC A&T and possibly Tuskegee, you'd have a pretty good conference.

Deuce no offense either but he's talking about a super conf.and its obvious we're not talking size here.

Come on pine bluff and valley? sounds like your trying to make a conf. advantageous to the east.

I'd rather add Tenn State and FAMU team and have North/South Alignment.

North: GSU, A&M, TnState, MSVU, UAPB, Jackson

South: TxSU, PVU, Alcorn, SU, Bama State, Famu

Assign each team a permanent opponent from the other division. Alcorn/Jackson, GSU/SU, TnState/FAMU, A&M/Bama State, UAPB/TSU, PVU/MSVU

That keeps the traditional rival games and the other would do a home and home then off for a season. The conference can work out the schematics. Now that is what I'd like to see.

Now, this is about the best I've read yet. All those others will not work.

This thread is going to get stupid real soon. Also, if this is a 1-AA conference, why would we have to give up our games with Alcorn and Valley? I honestly think that TNState would have a hard time convincing others to leave their conferences to join a new conference. JSU, SU and Gram are the SWAC. Now if TNState wants to form a new conference, maybe they can do it with the more southern MEAC schools and the BAMA schools in the SWAC. I personally hate the fact that the SWAC is about to go to a 9 game format so losing two schools would be an ideal situation to me. That would leave 8 schools in the SWAC ( 7 conference games and 4-non-conference).

As a conference,

TNState
AAMU
AlaState
FAMU
BCC
Savannah State
SC State
A&T

would not be a bad conference. It also would provide a place for other schools to go if they want to move up (ie Tuskegee, Fort Valley) . The SWAC is presently too big for the people that we have running it. At ten schools, you need someone as smart as me to run it and I don't think we can find a person like that for what they are paying. But basically, I think the entire thought of TSUU doing this at the 1-AA level is kinda stupid.
