Texas Southern starts new College Football Classic

I forgot to mention our Alexander Durley Complex is getting its bleachers refurbished as we speak along with a brand new press box. We already had the new "Astro Play" field surface and Mondo track installed a couple of years ago.

This will be our home stadium for the smaller games. This is a litmus test to show Slade that if we sell out this stadium every home game, then it would justify building an on campus stadium that seats 30K. Simply put, Slade is not one to invest heavily in athletics as this is not her major concern. The university needed attention to it's academic needs as a priority than that of athletics. In order to recruit a better academic makeup of professors and deans, they need to have competitive ammenities of our competitors rather than a football stadium that may or may not have a winning season. This is a double-edged sword we are dealing with at Texas Southern. Now had all the academic issues been addressed BEFORE Slade became President, then I would be all on her in taking care of the athletic needs as a major priority. I am all for a huge athletic program but it will always take a back seat to academics.

Cleb seriously how many people is that smaller stadium going to seat do you have any idea??????????

I don't care what anybody else say I think you alll need to have a stadium (only right)...... I think you all should push for that but I understnd what you said in your previoous post.....

Yes it has. Roughly around 12K (17K maximum).

Initially, Slade wanted to do an on campus stadium but met political resistance. She tried to broker a deal with UH for joint ownership of Robertson Stadium but met a resounding "NO" from their Regents even with a financial buy into the stadium.

Several acres of land presented itself to her from a Black North Houston community (Acres Homes) but so many alumni, students were dead set against that idea of building a stadium that far off our central campus.

It's more to it than I care to explain right now at this time but that answers your question.

Interesting

Texas Southern University has signed a three year contract to play in the Longview College Football Classic. Their opponent this year will be Alabama State University. The two teams are set to play Saturday, September 10 at 6:00pm at Lobo Stadium in Longview. The event also includes a Battle of Bands competition from 8:00am to 10:00am featuring the word renowned Grambling State University Tiger Marching Band. Tickets for the event are $15 each and include admission to both the game and the Battle of Bands.
So our band is going to participate in a Battle of the Bands that morning in Longview and then drive back to Grambling and perform at our home game that night?

LOL! Gotta' have a "draw" there. :smh:

Very interesting location/venue. I thought Tyler would've been a better locale but I digress. :(

How much is Grambling getting paid? I cant see how this game would make much money with all of these extra expenses.

..........I noticed on own schedule that we are to play TxSU on campus at Durley Stadium,is this true?

Yes, we are playing Alcorn for homecoming (October 15th) on campus at the Alexander Durley Stadium. This is the reason they are working day and night to get the pressbox and bleachers complete for this game.

OOPs I would reply and ask a question again C-Leb is putting me on a hiatus because of somethings that I have said and of course I am not a old schooler so I don't get my questions answered........... Besides I thought that they have been working day and night on this for a while and my SOURCE did mention that about two years ago C-Leb....... But since you are being small minded about it I hope you never get a stadium and we have a PROGRAM IN GRAM and a stadium not a footballl team without a stadium now LET THAT HOLD YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! SOG excuse me I know this is not the SMACK BOARD but I needed to make this point..... Now C-Leb you can call on him to take care of me as you always say (you blame him-DON"T BLAME HIM )!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

He refused to answer my question so now I must

Say dude,

You asked how many the stadium would seat and as I replied on the first page of this thread, see above. Damn, if reading was a prerequisite some people would make sense. :smh:

I still find that location interesting. There's a following in E Tx as we all know. May be better than all think it's going to be. Interesting.

CLeB, I know TSU has all bases covered but what is the cost of renting some of those "super" HS stadiums around H-Town? I'm sure that logistics that covers security, medical related, etc wouldn't be an issue.

I think attendance at this game will surprise a lot of people. Certainly it will draw more than if it was played in Houston. This should give us a very good presence in East Texas. This should open doors for athletic as well as academic recruiting in the area.

cat daddy,

I don't think that our band is going to Texas at all. They probably won't make enough money on this "classic" to require us to bring our band all the way to Texas.

Are you serious? The Ocean made the trip to Montgomery last year and it wasn't a classic. They even helped out ASU by participating in Battle of the Bands that Friday night.

Glad you answered this.

I think it is a win-win situation. The folks in East Texas would have the opportunity to see Black College Football and the battle of the bands. For a small town this is going to be something for them to do. For TSU, this gives us an opportunity to secure another venue to play for the next three years while we get our stadium concerns addressed.

The promoters see $$$ for them and TSU would be able to profit a bit as well. If this game was played in Houston it would not draw well and now having a prescence in Longview attracts more students from the area to TSU and some interests from football players to our program.

Good weather on game day equals a packed house. You'll see.

I feel that the band from Grambling will help boost the numbers for this game by just being involved...... I hope that the turnout will be good for this game..... I am counting on this simply because TSU seems to be banking on a good turnout.......Perhaps people that turnout for the battle of the band will come and stay and watch the game.... Ok you 'll see........... 59 north hear we come...

TSU vs. both SU and GSU in alternate years.

But after you subtract expenses such as transportation for 3 marching bands then how much profit is expected?
