Terence Graves Calls Out "Celebrity" Coaching Hires

I think the term "Celebrity Hire" needs to be defined. Doug Williams was not a celebrity hire. He coached through the ranks....

To me a Celebrity Hire is an individual who played in the NFL but never coached on any level.

Although he is a living legend Doug Coached at Grambling for nearly 10 seasons , but after he left the team boycotted & ESPN was reporting on Gram's " run down facilities ". Doug has many NFL connections like Daniel Snyder , Arthur Blank & other billionaires number in his back pocket , but I missed the major upgrades . That flies in the face of the athlete worshippers & slurpers who still lie or hope their heroes will bring these ambigious "resources" .

Shade has already said two things I like from watching him on the local news tonight. One is he said his job is to lead and mentor these young man and make sure they get their education first. Second he said and I'm paraphrasing his words "He is an Alabama grad and won a championship with a ring, but you will not see him with anything on but Alabama A&M University logos on. He is a Bulldog now and he will only wear Bulldog logos and so will his team. His players will not walk around with other schools stuff and will only AAMU. You got a be all in if you want to be on this team". Nothing pisses me off more than to see kids on scholarship walking around with Bama or Auburn gear on. 💯 He is also a Bama native who grew up coming to MCC and attended our homecoming. Makes a difference when you have someone who understands the A&M culture in some way. Let's go Bulldogs!

Did the university want that help?

Some , who like to make excuses for athletes, even pretend that they aren't exposed or taught about HBCU'S when Coaches like Shade , Mickey Joseph, Vick , Mo Williams, Prime, etc. ( excluding D.Jackson from Cali) all grew up immersed in or exposed to HBCU culture, but chose PWI'S as mostly "sidewalk" fans who sport the schools gear. Shade seems very humble, good coach & hire by A&M.

Not all folks are impressed by Blacks who take pride in their proximity to White folks. These folks don't get rich by casually giving away their money to ex employees. Only delusional fans impressed by celebrity & these people closeness to Whites believe that E. George, D Jackson , Vick , etc.....are going to come save you through their " connections" to Whites & their ambigious " resources " .

Deion was the only one who utilized the connections but he had something to prove and another motive at the end of the day with his kids involved and his personal goals

the others don't have the type of connections to major life-changing money we think - they have more fans than anything that assume their some walking ATM but in reality aren't - the ones that have life-changing money are spending it where they want to spend it

Shade's wife is also a graduate of Alabama A&M so he is very familiar with A&M not only being an Alabama native but family and friends who graduated from A&M.

The only resource these guys come with is their names when it comes to recruiting. And in many cases thats good enough

I think his point may be that most folks think they come with other connections and resources similar to Prime.

Prime stayed mainstream way after playing and calculated when it was time for him to get into the business as I know he was courted by someone prior to Jackson State but said no at the time - plus he was a legit superstar with that charisma that his generation loved and they automatically followed

Only one who could even match that is Strahan if he went somewhere as he can connect both sides of the fence - Vick is more 757 famous and the dog fighting thing cuts a certain segment out

prior to the portal those big names may have helped but it's open season now - the articles they brag on recruiting is normally about a former 4 star or such who bombed out on our level

Disrespectful to our deserving Veteran and young coaches now at our HBCUs. NOW YOU WANT US! GET THE HELL ON!

Lamar Odom ( serious) , Tyreek Hill & this clown McCoy among other black athletes (who would never play at an HBCU ) are now just mocking us. Deserved.

Everyone who is against celebrity hires can point to TH & SM (and Ed Reed) as prime examples

Odom???

What HBCU was trying for him?? Did he not have scandals around him? Like high school hopping and ACT score issues? A coach lost his job over him.

What HBCU wanted all that drama? Some kids are to be ignored for a reason.
We saw what happened to Baylor basketball with their scandal. A black coach got his life ruined by it and trashed by certain coaches including the former one at Duke. While the white coach heading all that-still found work and almost came back to the game.

If that was a HBCU-that school would probably still be trying to recover 22 years later.

These brothas have and have had ample opportunities to $upport the hbcu of their choice. Considering how a large percentage of pro athletes end up broke, these dudes who are offering their unsolicited services to HBCUs come across as a hustle .

This. Chris Paul would never have gone to a HBCU like his parents , but he has attached his name to Black Colleges with his Classics & NBA outreach programs while still active. I'm not sure how much of an impact it's had ,but most would understand a bit more if he wanted to coach an HBCU someday. He does have a positive history of trying to use his name to uplift.

Coach win or coach get deleted.
Player wins while finally getting $$$ for hurting their body or player transfers & washes out elsewhere. Just beef up how we(HBCUS) take care of their bodies as student athletes, raise the majors/disciplines they major in and adapt to scale. If I was an AD that would be my priorities in tune with funding. I'd just also have that contract clause for them to keep their problematic hands and peens off students.

Yeah like wanting to start and can't make the run times of the actual starters. It's a HUGE risk at the expense of the school which hurts the entire school if it doesn't pay off.
