SWACs fastest man?

Good Question JST. Do we want to limit it to just football players or do we add the track athletes too? I know in the late 60's and early 70's the SWAC had some Olympic Track athletes so I would assume this is going to be hard to answer. As far as football players that I personally saw, I remember Trumaine Johnson of GSU, Slyvester"Zip Code" Stamps of JSU, Carl Powell of JSU, Ryan Lewis of SU, Cornell Swain and Donell Baker of SU. Milton Mack and Bye Bye Barney of Alcorn. Just some of the many fast guys I saw on the Football field. Some of these were also Tracksters. This is just too hard of a question. I am sure there is the fastest recorded track time listed somewhere.

Maybe Cleb-28 knows who has the fastest recorded time in SWAC history.

LOL.

Tyrone Jones (wingback for Gram when I was there) was a speedster. He was an integral part to the Arena League champion team last year. he was definitely in the 4.2 to 4.3 range.

Bill Walsh always said, Jerry Rice was not the fastest person, but once in open space -- no one can catch him. Cat Morris was like this too.

A blast from the past

--Kenny Burrows--TX SO.

---Frank Lewis-- GRAMBLING

---Trumaine Johnson --Grambling

-
-Willie McGEE----ALCORN ST.==THE FASTEST (next to FAMU's
BOB HAYES) according to my eyes.

I remember Robert Woods from Grambling who was a football and track star. He later played for the old Houston Oilers.

I always heard that Bob Hayes of FAMU was the fastest in his time and he was also the fastest player on the Dallas Cowboys team back in the days.

Some people just can't stick to the subject.

I would have to say Pete Richardson, this is not smack, because you guys know how I feel about Pete, but if you were at the SU-JSU game last year, you know what I'm talking about.

I thought I'd seen speed in my short life, but when the gun sounded to end the game, well let's just say, you had to have seen Pete take off after one of those SWAC referee's JST was talking about to know what real speed is.

Pete ran across that field so fast, I don't think he touched the mud. Hell, I thought Superman was the only man that wore blue, that could run. I'd take Pete any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

NICE:D :D :D

Robert Octavious Woods, wingback at GSU in 1976 & 77. Woods at one time shared the indoor 60 yard dash record (5.8 seconds) and was a legitimate 9.1 hundred yard sprinter.

I remember when James Hunter was the speed king at GSU (9.4), he and Woods "hooked up in a sprint". No contest!!!!

I later years....Dexter Butcher who played tailback 89-93. According to "eye witness accounts", Dexter never lost a race during the "street meets" against GSU & La Tech players.

MB, as you may know, a 9.1 100-yard sprinter was almost on a world record pace during those days. Heck, one maybe able to place in the top five in most world meets.

Corey Bradford (JSU) was the fastest in recent memory....... Donald Driver (Alcorn) could scoot too.

Thats who I was going to say. I played against him in High school. That boy was the fastest person I ever saw. :eek2: We had a hard time trying to keep up with him on the scouting tape.

I'd like to throw a name in there too....

How about these guys?

John George - SU - WR

Ryan Lewis - SU -RB (I think somebody mentioned him already)

Jim Hines (Texas Southern)

"After high school, Jim Hines attended Texas Southern University in Houston and ran for their track team. While with the Flying Tigers, he ran a 9.1 100-yard dash to equal the world record, sharing the feat with Bob Hayes (FAMU) and Harry Jerome. A year later, he made history at an AAU Nationals semi-final heat in Sacramento. Hines ran 9.90 seconds for 100 meters, making him the first man to break the race's 10 second barrier.

Four months later, at the Olympics in Mexico City, he was officially entered into the record books as the world's fastest sprinter. When Hines ran the 100 yard dash on October 15, 1968, the ABC network clock showed a time of 9.89. Though the record books would later settle at a time of 9.95, which Hines disputed, his record-breaking speed received international acclaim. Hines went on to earn the United States another gold in the 400 meter relay."

Now when it comes to football, I have no idea. But I can tell you that without a doubt, the 2002 SWAC's fastest man wears a basketball uniform in the fall and in the spring he wears a bodysuit and spikes:

Southern's Brian Johnson

They had an article about Johnson a few weeks ago and mentioned him running the 200 meters. I was like, dayum that boys about 6'6", he ain't supposed to be that fast at that height.

Apparently he has a future as a sprinter and long jumper. Just goes to show the type of athletes we are still able to produce.

BlackBeans===>Dexter Butcher terrorized that area (except SI) his last two years. He was fast as hell...

BTW, how many yards did my homeboy Spencer Douglas get on yall when you played the Island. That Dude should be in the league, but academics and other problems kept him off the field.
Fortunately, he straighten his life around (comes from a good family) and is doing well in Cali.

Homer Jones, Football, Texas Southern, Also a sprinter for the flying tigers. Had a 100 yard kick off return on Monday Night Football. According to legend, Homer Jones would party all week and along with four or five team mate would win track meets on week ends.

Back In The Day

Willie McGee, flanker at Alcorn in the mid 70's was an AAU Champion in the 60 meter dash. His pro football career was cut short by a broken leg while playing for the 49ers or Chargers.

Does anyone remember Nolan "Super Net" Smith from JSU? He played for the Kansas City Chiefs. Nolan could fly, he was a world class sprinter.

Spencer Douglas racked up some yardage. He was alright in the backfield, but it was that line that kept us off him. THAT DAYIUM BOX WAS HELL!!!! I could not touch nobody in that backfield. I never saw the box ran like that before or after I saw it ran by SI. You guys knew how to operate that box. After playin you guys, I wanted our coach to run it. But, all he was interested in was "Viking sweep left, Viking sweep right". His "bread and butter, baby".:redhot: :(
Tell the truth. You all knew where we was going, didnt you?

Sure do. Nolan "Super Gnat" Smith was pretty fast. I think my Pops played on the JSU team with him. I have to check the years. But my Dad use to tell me about him. His son went to HS with me in Jackson. As did another former JSU and KC Chief player's son, Willie Richardson. I heard he was fast too.

I forgot to include HOF and JSU alum Lem Barney. Also former JSU and NY Jets DB Roscoe Word. And HOF DB Mel Blount from SU. Former Steeler players say he was the fastest player on those great Super Bowl Teams.

JR,

Willie Richardson played with the Baltimore Colts, three of his brothers played at JSU also. I believe that Gloster Richardson played with the Chiefs.

Who is your father?
