SWAC office to stay in Birmingham..........

it wasn't gsu's falut that it rained the same day and aamu didnt bring no one, when uapb and gsu played in shrevport the games have great crowds, people get tired of going to boring arse bham and that's the reason why the crowds aren't big for the swac championship

depends on wht your definition of fun is.... What do you like to do for fun? I have a good time anytime I go to Birmingham... so if you arent having "fun"... then maybe it is YOU.

also the entertainment district was approved yesterday by the Bham/Jeff Co council... 95 million dollar complex which is being built and ran by the developers of Memphis' Beale Street.... so it will be finished by the time Grambling gets back to the championship game ;)

Kendrick, you're telling us that a city of two million plus can't get 40,000 plus people to come to one game? Are you satisfied with that from b'ham?
If you are then your standards are waaaayyyyyy lower than mine.
I don't believe that it can happen the SWAC does not change the way it markets the football season and the SCG. There is too much band pub and halftime show pub that it takes away from the players and coaches. That's the main reason why fans don't come to games--they don't know the players. Honestly fans would rather see the bands than the game as sad at that is to say. I know hardcore SWAC fans like yourself know more than I do, but you have to draw a new era of SWAC fans. The office does a poor job of that. Why would fans go to game when they don't know any of the players or coaches? There are no intriguing matchups that would draw fringe fans. There is no build up throughout the season from the media and fans for just one game in the regular season. What makes you think fans will come to a game that is two weeks after the regular for teams they know nothing about in the first place

Like I said before, they could play that game in anywhere in the nation and it still won't be a big draw and the media coverage will still lack as long a it is sold wrong by the SWAC. I hate to compare the SWAC to other conferences, but we get our butts kicked when it comes to attendance of our championship game. Yeah, you can say back in 19whatever the game was sold out, but people change and the game change as well. The conference has to adjust to the change. We live in a sports society where we can choose where we spend our entertainment dollar, and I don't hear too many fans of teams who did not make the title game make plans to attend the game. We already can't play for the national championship, so why don't we make the event more attractive to fans and media instead of having the same old song and dance each year? Have concerts, a parade, a fan funfest day, interactive games for the kids and fans. Have autographs sessions with SWAC Legends you could even have a SWAC All-Star game the day before the game. You could even have a battle of the bands and step show inviting every SWAC school to participate. The title game should be a showcase of the conference and a celebration of the teams involved--not another game featuring a staduim that is half filled. Then the media and more fans will come.

But, if you want to go there, why is there always 70,000 plus at the MCC, but two months later, y'all can't make it back to BHam?

You ain't gonna get know logical answer for that on this board. The SWAC is content with nothing. We will never progress to anything truly competitive over all on a consistent basis. This is one reason why we can't attract any real athletes. We are a second third thought conference for talent. The powers that be have bought into the classic mentality of raising money rather than the product speaking for itself. Who wants to go to Birmingham for a football game in December. I can tell you from jump who doesn't. People who live in Birmingham.

I agree that poor marketing is a part of the problem. You mentioned the bands. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if you bring four bands, which is only two, since there will already be two bands there, and have a pre-game, halftime and post game band-off contest. This will bring in fans from other schools, high schoolers, and other nearby HBCU fans.
This would've been more feasible IF the game was closer to MOST of the SWAC schools, but it's probably a long shot now.

Kendrick, get it through your head, that Black people love music, dancing and HBCU band excitement. That's why TSPN has a Band forum.
That's just the way it is. This should be used by the SWAC to it's advantage to market this game to SWAC fans, high schoolers, and to people in and around the b'ham area. I almost guarantee that it would work.
B'ham would easily have more than 40,000.

Well it appears to me that the black people who attend the white college sporting events aren't there for the band. Folks need to stop making our people look simple. That's just perpetuating a stereo-type.

I don't have too much of a problem w/ the decision because I recognize the economics behind it. :swink: The MAIN problem I have is why in the sans HELL are college presidents who ARE NOT in the business of athletics making ATHLETIC type decisions? WTF are the ADs in office for? Now, that mon amie, is dumber than dumb. :retard:

U don't know what Shreverport would done. I do know what Birmingham is doing.

NOT A DAYUM THANG!!!!!

We are talkin about a regular season game in Shreverport between GRAM and AMMU not the champinship game right. Not a weekend when other SWAC SCHOOLS ARE STILL PLAYING FOOTBALL GAMES? RIGHT??

UAPB may have doubled fans but the attendance still stunk!!!!!

Da SCG is the ONLY SWAC GAME on that WKND!!!!

Oh well.........I am sure VOWELS and STAFF have an outstanding MARKETING plan for this upcoming year.

IT'S CALLED "IT'S FREE DAMMIT"

Birmingham has not SUPPORTED da SCG at all!!!

SWAC OFFICE IS A JOKE!!!!!!!!1

"NAA NA NA NAA NAA:lol:!"

Panthro,

Actually, ever conference's council or presidents/chancellors votes and makes decision on college athletics. Even in the administration of NCAA the presidents/chancellors make decision on college athletics.

Think About It!!

JR,

Jafus you keep saying that......I know you have studied this type stuff in grad school and the rest of us have not, but that does not mean some folks alternative ideas would not work. They would just need you type of folks to maybe take those prospectives and do the research to see if it could work. Business sense is business sense no matter what industry. Research and numbers are fine and are needed. But I have seen companies go belly up on ideas that were researched to the upmost. Some things are common sense business decisions once you take the emotions out of it. But hey I am not a Sports Management Professional and of course my business acumen is probably not relative to what would work in college athletics. There are alot of professional owners who have been in sports a long time and still don't what the hell they doing business wise. So who knows. LOL.

Now before I getting that SMH from you lol.......I am not suggesting the SWAC roll out of B-ham just on some whim. It is obvious the presidents feel this is the best business interest for all the schools. I just think Joe Blow SWAC fan right now is just not happy because we don't each have the fan base to pack these big stadiums without local turnouts and the game in B-ham has not been embraced by the locals and of course if our team is not in the SCG we don't attend and I know I am guilty of it myself. But like I posted before, as an Ohio State alum I do not see OSU fans going to support other Big 10 teams either. But it is not needed since all the Big 10 schools fan bases show up and pack the house. We don't have that luxury since our schools are not that big. So whether the decisions of our presidents pan out and the SWAC grows by leaps and bounds we will see. I do not have alot of confidence in the council of presidents since most of them are not business minded and who can bamboozled by fancy reports that suggest things are going great for the conference.

Okay now here comes the million dollar Jafus question. In your opinion and from what you have seen, do you think the SWAC presidents are steering our conference in the right direction with their decisions concerning athletics?

The SWAC presidents/chancellors in this case are simply making a decision based on reading a RFQ bid report.

If we can see the vote...we can find out which school supports what....

I have the strangest feeling one school's president probably swung the vote 6-4 because UAPB, GSU, SU, PV and TSU would logically vote Shreveport while Jackson, Valley and Alcorn would be in the middle..the Bamas voted B-Ham obviously...

even if the 3 Sipp schools and 2 Bamas voted BHam that's only 5.....so some president for some odd reason casted the crazy vote....

will this person step forward?

I was looking forward to finally watching "SWAC In Motion" in my local market, casino sponsorship, etc.

well......unless my school is in the SCG on to basketball by then and I can really see TSU and PV's departments getting happy once again to spend more airfare money to make the meetings in BHam

Saw this happening..........
Reason.....The deal that Birmingham was giving the SWAC was to good to give up.....

Oh well...........
Now....If the SWAC Football Championship can get moved to the 1st Saturday in December instead of the week BEFORE X-MAS!!!!!

And moved the Championship game to Jackson or SOMEWHERE!!!!

They can put that office on the moon if they want.
Bottom line is as long as you have the same jackazzes in there, the same mis-management of it is going to occur....

jag 79,
You're contradicting yourself and backtracking so much that it's almost comical.
First you asked "why is there always 70,000 plus at the MCC, but two months later, y'all can't make it back to BHam?"

and then you followed up with "Once again, you cannot compare SU-JSU, JSU-ALC, AAMU-ASU, or even PV-GSU to the SCG."

:lol::lol:

The SCG aint about to top the big in-state classics. And it's not even reasonable to expect it would. No more than it would've been to expect the Heritage Bowl to top the classics. Not gon happen.

BAMA!!

The league is budgeted to receive nearly $600,000 from the city in fiscal year 2007 and doesn't have to pay rent for its football and basketball championship venues or its office space in the A.G. Gaston Building.

And just so you get a better understanding .... location is important. There ain't denying it.

This is my personal SU past trips since I was five:

Itta Bena -- 2 (MVSU's team had a lot to do with me not going.)
Montgomery/ Mobile -- 3 (Bama State's team .... see above ... these three are the last three)
-------------------------------------------------
Huntsville -- 0 (Distance my friend .... distance.)
Birmingham -- 3 (and soon to be four in September)
Note: These last two would be my longest trips from Baton Rouge.
---------------------------------------------------
Lorman -- 9 (Best atmosphere other than JSU on SU weekend and Mumford; and two and a half hrs away.)
Jackson -- 7 (Best game in SWAC, 3 hour trip
Little Rock/ Pine Bluff -- 0 --- see MVSU
Houston -- 6 (Family there, TxSU usually plays up, and it's Houston)

There is NO reason why the SWAC can't rotate this game from Houston, to Jackson and to BHam? Let ALL of your fans see what you have.

We have to be honest with ourselves ..... we are not the SEC or Big 12, who BOTH have moved their games around.

Most of us, with the choice of the BC or MCC or CCC/ OR the SCG are gonna choose our traditional games .... it's what we know and we're born with.

I like the idea of rotating it.

Man these folks don't understand business on this page. It's about the money that's why all our broke azz schools voted for Bham. Ain't neither one of us got more than the other. So we took what we could get.

Other than the stab for the playoffs, this is my point exactly!

BUSINESS??? :retard: :retard:

Da business is that the STadium is FREE!!! Dat is the business.

SWAC don't have to market no SCG to make up for renting and actually get ASSES in seats. That's why da SWAC office don't give a dayum about no marketing strategy or nothing. What for??

These fools see FREE and pass out and froth at the mouf. Don't wanna pay for shat. Don't wanna m USE THEY DAYUM BRAIN to make MORE MONEY for the SWAC.

They just SEE "FREE" at that 's it.

Casinos is and was ready to throw money at the scg and every and other championship event in Shreveport.

Again I say... What Business is that.

It's FREE so its good BUSINESS!!!!:retard: :retard: :uzi: :uzi:

How is alienating? Im sure very soon we will know the dates of the basketball tournament and the SWAC Championship game... you will have PLENTY of time to make plans for it....the same way you make plans for the Bayou Classic... problem is YOU aint going if your team aint playing.... whos fault is that? Get your reservation , plane ticket as soon as the dates are released or shut the hell up complaining.

No smoking gun, this was the post that I responded to, asking you about the MCC .... you brought up the BC first!

Since the vote was close, I bet it was something like this:

B'ham: ASU, AAMU, SU, MVSU, JSU, ALC

Shreveport: PV, TX SO, GRAM, UAPB

So why not try the game on a rotating basis to see if it can grow in other places? We both acknowledge that it's not going to be bigger than those games, but unfortunately for you, the ONLY evidence we have is what has happen in Bham ..... we don't know about other cities. That's why we continue to have this discussion ..... the unknown possibilities of another site.
