SWAC Footbal This Season...Critique YOUR School

I think that Gramling will do well. It will be an issue of resolving the East in New Orleans of course. The one concern I have is Bruce's leg....how strong is it?

UAPB.

Teams will be UP for UAPB this year. I still think UAPB will do well, probably #2 in the West. Believe or not, I hear the running game has gotten stronger, but I don't know how good the passing game will be.

I honestly think that GSU may be making a step backwards with Bruce at the helm. That team is more suited for the run (wing-T). Defending the wing-T requires discipline, which SWAC defenses won't have time to prepare for since this is an AIR-IT-OUT conference.

You are right Sperm. We are taking a step backwards with Bruce at the helm.

I think Alcorn will be pretty good, we will have the top recievers in the SWAC. I don't know about this true freshmen at quaterback, I hear he is pretty good but I guess we will have to see. We are returning a lot on offense the backs are deep this year as always, I just hope the defense gets strong, they were kind of lacking at times last year mainly against the run.

Again, we have to win the Magic City Classic to play in the SCG.

Listen to MD wisdom fellow SWACpagers. He knows what he speak. The two major classics BC/MCC will decide who plays in the SCG :alicia:

geezy, I know a lot of you Gramblingnite's like to believe that, but believe me the talent levels at SU, and ASU is right on par with GSU's, and I would imagine if AAMU were to ever get their quarterback position solid, they wouldn't be too far behind if not on equal footing.

SU like the previous 2 years, will be breaking in a new quarterback, but with a load of experienced WR's, offensive lineman, and a solid core of running backs, the Jags will be fine offensively. JC Lewis will be at the helm of the offense, and he's been in the system for 2 years, this kid could very well be the best quarterback to step on the field for Pete Richardson.

He threw for over 8000 yards, and 67 touchdowns in high school, and in the event he falters, or gets injured he will have 2 all state quarterbacks backing him up, along with a sleeper from East Texas in CJ Byrd, and a former starting quarterback at the D1-AA level in Gerard Barrow.

The defense will be the biggest question mark, though they should be greatly improved from last year. This unit may surprise some folk, there's size, and depth on the defensive line, speed, and range at linebacker, and the secondary returns SWAC Freshman Of The Year Jarmaul George, along with a few highly touted incoming freshmen, and transfers.

Special teams should be solid. Breck Ackerly is returning to do the kicking, though he may have to do double duty in the kicking game, and it's pick your poison in the return game.

As usual the Jags should be in the thick of it by season's end, and a 3rd consecutive trip to Birmingham isn't out of the question.

Are you sure about that.......

Didn't you forget to tell us all how you lost 8 out 11 defensive starters. And if it wasn't for the new 80% rule it would have been 10 out of 11 starters lost on defense. And don't forget about the 2 lineman, tightend and QB you lost. JC Lewis won't work for su this year. It is proven that su quarterback has to be CLIPBOARD holder until their senior year. See what happened to Quincy Reeshard when he was a junior. In 2007 JC should be ready to run the offense.

You dayum right I'm sure about that. We lost some starters, but we got some back. From what I understand Kevin Mack was granted another year of eligiblity, Jarmaul George will return to his starting role, Rayland Johnson will be back, Darwin Hammond will be back at safety, and Jarvis Bridges will return to his starting role at the other corner. So again, yes we will be greatly improved on defense.

Quincy's first 1/4 year as a starter was in David Oliver's first year as the OC, his previous 3 years were under Mark Orlando, but after being in Oliver's system for 2 years, Quincy blossomed, the same for Ricks, and this same situation will apply for JC. Different coaching system, different results, being a football man you should understand that. Research, research, research.

I don't know why a lot of you GSU people think you are the only ones who can improve, it must be something in the water, or something.

Well let the Jags say amen!!! AMEN

Is this the be honest thread, or the sneak attack thread? No smack!

Surprisingly the biggest question marks for GSU will be on offense. With record setting QB Bruce Eugene returning, hopes are high in the red clay hills, but because of the type of injury he suffered, there is stilll some question as to how he has conditioned himself, and how the kneee will respond. Lucky for us he is a QB not a running back. Because it has been well proven that it takes two season for a RB to recover from major knee inury. Although we are solid at the RB position, and the offensive line will be much better than the past two seasons, the WR core is a huge question mark! Several dropped passes last season hurt Landers, will Tim Abney return, will Mose Harris live up to the hype and potential, and if neither does the job, who will step up and be th go to guy for Bruce and the offense? And the battle for the #2 QB spot should produce some sparks with Landers and high school standout Larry Kerelgan.

The GSU defense will be solid. Like many programs in the conference, the new 80% rule is going to help GSU, the defensive lineman most. At linebacker we are solid, led by Demitri Carr. With transfer Luke Jackson from Arkansas possibly being in the mix. DB's re always a concern in the pass happy SWAC, but experience will help the DB's this season. The defense has been improving the last few season, but alot of turmoil on the sidelines with staff changes etc., may have hindered development. This season there is a sense of continuity which should tranlate to on the field success.

Now on another note. D-Nice made a comment about talent, and I have to agree. At GSU and SU the talent levels are about equal. And I have to throw ASU in that mix too. These teams have recruited their states well, and loaded up on quality transfers and non qualifiers that the big schools may have backed off on. That is why they have all played each other close the past few seasons. I just don't see one team have a clear edge in talent over the other. Now that said, talent alone doesn't win football games.

I concur 100%. :nod2: Which makes for a very interesting season, that I am looking forward too.

Don't all schools basically recruit their states well and load up on quality transfers and non qualifiers that big schools have backed off on? What are you basing you opinion on?

well as for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, if we can find a passing game that can contribute at least 100-150 yards a game we should be a hard team to beat... of course all know we are going to run the hell out of that ball just dont get comfortable with it becaue the Lion will pull a trick out of its ass. now as for the defesive side of the ball the lions are going to be ok please believe.... UAPB will no longer be a surprize but this **** is going to be real....just don't go to sleep on us......

If we can improve on the QB spot we will be dangerous. The QB spot has hurt us for the longest. If that hurtle can be cleared it will take the pressure off of the defense and make us a top contender. If not we are in for a long season.

You think all that AAMU needs is a QB and their problems will be solved. But you did say that Southern defense would be better after losing 8 starters. Newsflash Kevin Mack and Rene aren't good defensive players.

Until I see some elgible players in a few weeks strapping it up, I ain't saying nada. :| The thing we look forward to is improvement and commitment.

We have no basis @ this point because we're still rebuilding. Isht, we're trying to build. lol Rebuild my arse. lol
