SWAC Championship Game Attendance

Everyone loves a winner and the past four years that really didn't happen for us, I bet if SU had the past 4 years like we did, there numbers would be less. true millions of people are here however, maybe less than 1/10 actually give a damn about HBCU football.... furthermore, would this game be welcomed by Houston period... Bayou Classic here was:(
 



You know I like the idea of having the SWAC title game at the home stadium of the team with the best record. That way you avoid the embarrassment of a national TV audience tuning into a game where 1/3 of the stadium is filled.

It is a shame to the SWAC that two most historic programs in HBCU football can't sellout a championship game.

Hell, the SEC title game used to be played at Legion Field and it drew more than 70,000 people in the two years it was played in Alabama before it was moved to Atlanta.

Why can't the SWAC title game be like that?
 
You really couldn't feel any excitement for the SWAC Championship in Jackson this year, even if the game was played in Jackson; I think the attendance would have been about 25,000. I really think Bell and Culberson destroyed JSU's fan base. Fans left and have not returned. JSU haven't had a home game with an announced attendance of over 50,000 since 1999. :noidea:

You are the first person from JStank that will admit that. And not over 40k unless it was SUCK and very few over 25k period.

The year the Bayou Classic was in Houston, there were a lot of circumstances surrounding the game. The attendence was a little over 53,000 and that was a very rainy and cold day. Plus, with many of the would be attendees neglecting to attend because of their situation with Katrina. 53,000 was a good number. If that game was in Houston, it would easily have over 75,000 every year because people travel from all over for that game. The only thing it would lack would be the events and attractions surrounding the classic.

IMO, Houston would be about the same as Bham is now. It is just too far to the West as Bham is too far to the East. If for some reason this game is in Houston and one of the Bama schools represent the East, I just don't see a large number of people from either Bama school making this trip.

Shreveport or Jackson are the ONLY two logical places to play this game knowing what we know now about SCG attendance.

I like that idea, as well, but SWAC stadiums could not handle the crowd--

If today's Grambling-Jackson St. game, where the crowd was over 25,000, was held in Grambling the Eddie Robinson stadium would reach capacity at 19,600. There is enough hotel space between Shreveport, Ruston and Monroe, but with Jackson being around 3 hours away from Gramb-- fans would come out of the woodworks.... literally.

Birmingham is also boring. Who wants to go there and make a weekend of it?
Maybe the East and the West should have "Home" fields in large cities.... the team with the best standings going into the championship would get the "Home" advantage--
West-- Dallas
Cotton Bowl capacity 68,252

East-- Atlanta
Georgia Dome capacity 71,250
Bobby Dodd Stadium capacity 55,000

I personally don't (and never have) believe in the "boring" factor. People who take the time to make the trip to Bham go for the game. They don't go for what's in the city. They may take advantage for what the city has to offer while they are there, but city itself has little if anything to do with it.

Spoken like a true football player/man/sportsfan.
People go for the game, AND the bands, AND the after parties, AND the events. When our family travels for Gramb games, we like to go where we can do something with the kids before or after a game... the women like to shop... we go to nice restaraunts... families that roll like this to games are not in the minority. My Gramb grad aunts will ride to New Orleans with us during the Classic and never set foot in the Dome and have more fun than anybody.

The "boring factor" was discussed among some alumnus here in Atlanta.

So you can't do those things in B'Ham? I've been there many times and can do all of that there.

Tried to-- not fun.
We roll to Gramblingham and roll right back to Atlanta afterward. I would have to say the games in New Orleans, Las Vegas, Dallas, and even Detroit and Chicago, have spoiled us.

But that does not defeat the fact that they, like many others, won't come if the spot is a bore. Have you known some folks to sit in a stadium and can't tell you the score after the game? They talk the whole time, watch the halftime show and leave.... They are there for many things and the game is not the only thing.

Hey Cubs fans do it all the time...but they just don't leave in the middle of the game. I don't think what stadium the game is played in is all that important. I think what surrounds the stadium is from some of the comments I have been reading.

Since SWAC fans get apathetic when it comes to the conference championship game there has to be a location that has nice weather, provides entertaiment and is easily accessible to all fans of the SWAC that would create a capacity or close to capacity crowd.

I don't know if that place exists. That is something for overzealous SWAC fans to figure out.

My vote is Houston. Say what you want but people will come since there is much more to do here then any other city within the SWAC.
 
I think only A&M, Bama ST, SU, JSU and Gram should get to vote and decide. No one else is going to ever go anyway. Well Pine Bluff gets a half of vote. They did make it once.
