SWAC BB Tourney in Biloxi, MS?

I know the tourney was in Biloxi, MS for the 2000-2001 season and, if I remember correctly, the attendance was not bad at all and it was a lot closer to the majority of campuses. Why was it moved to Birmingham?

Please don't say because of the SWAC HQ's....

He should have made a poll. Bolixi MS has my vote in the MS Convention Center.

I say do the conference tourney like the Southland

the higher seed team at home in each round...

either that or move it onto a member school's campus...

To all you Biloxi advocates, is there a Biloxi to go to right now?

Good question. I say play it in the Athletic Assembly Center on the campus of Jackson State. Jackson is actually the midway point of the entire conference.

...Carry On..

Deuce visited Biloxi recently, maybe he can tell yall whether or not Biloxi is capable of holding anything at this moment or in the very near future.

It should be moved to a truly NEUTRAL site!!! Memphis Tennessee!

I'm listening to this "home cooking" on the radio!!!:smh: :shame:

whoever wins the regular season title should host the tourney. afterall....you do want the best team to represent the conference. they've earned the homecourt advantage.

as for biloxi, I live there. the arena is almost w/in walking distance. as nice as it would be to have the swac tourney here. to be able to go to every game and see all of you there, I can not in good conscience advocate it coming here. you see, they still think there confederates here. do recall it was not long ago that a young alcorn student sat on the beach for months to get them to remove the confederate battle flag from the flag display on the beach. the finally put it to a non-binding referendum and 32% of the county said take it down. they couldn't believe that a 3rd of the people wanted it removed. of course they didn't do anything. so I try and spend as much of my money out of the county as I can. if they don't want to respect me, I don't want to pump money into their businesses. so that's my issue w/ biloxi. but if they move the tourney here I'll still go. lol.

I've said in the past too that Biloxi is a perfect spot for the tournament. .... but right now, for obvious reasons (Katrina) It's not really the "ideal spot" it was this time last year.

I wouldn't mind seeing the tourney at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.

I guess we can all agree that B-ham sucks as a tournament site. There are probably a couple of places more central located that would do better. But there are a lot of mid-major conferences that hold their tournaments on campus (usually the top seed).

MHSAA got that sowed up around this time of the year. But on the other hand, there is talk of the HS State Tourney being played in Tupelo in the near future.

This sounds good on the surface but you must think of scenarios that may play out. Two that I can think of for instance is say if:

a) two teams go to the final regular conference game tied; this may give fans only a week or so to make travel arrangements as well as the conference to make arrangements for set up.

b) the Alabama A&M men win the regular season title and the Prairie View women win the regular season title. How do you settle this according to your suggestion?

The DeSoto County Civic Center and the Mississippi Gulf Coast would be great locations. It will take some time for the coast facility to get ready to host the SWAC tourney, but it might be ready by 2007. The DeSoto County Civic Center is fairly new, located outside of Memphis in a county that's growing and not far from the casinos in Tunica, is home to an Arena football league team, a hockey team, and is desperately looking for a tournament and willing to pay. With the attraction of Memphis and the casinos, it could help attendance. The Birmingham venture has been a failure.

:shame: at the largest attended game thus far was a little over 900 people for the Southern/Alcorn game.

I would like to see a revolving tournament with a host school. The host school order would be determined by a drawing. The host school would select the arena. AAMU would defer to the 10th host since the tourney was in B'ham this year. Arena must seat a minimum of 7000 attendance.

Examples:

2007 S.U. F.G. Clark Activity Center
2008 JSU...Walter Payton Complex
2009 Alcorn...a 7000+ arena in Jackson
2010 PV....a 7000+ arena in Houston
2011 Gram.....Hobdy Dome (are what every they will name the new arena)
2012 Bama St. Acadome
ect........

This way the different communities and student bodies would have better access to the games in specific years. I believe the gate would increase and this would be a way to "grow" the tourney. When 7000 becomes a consistent gate problem (lack of seats), we revisit this plan.

I think that just may work.
