SWAC Basketball -- How Bad Can It Get?

BF,

Southern seemed to enjoy a former Bearkat, Roydrick Merritt, last year in baseball. I believe he was their ace on the staff...that one of a few black baseball players over the years -- Kats have had a few Hispanics stop in over the years...

As it relates to Bright, he was recruited by Texas Tech and SHSU. Solid player, glad SHSU has him.

before TT makes it seem like the SLC dominates just because who they are...your going to dominate in alot of olympic sports as you can recruit whites, hispanics and blacks with relative ease...in most cases, the SLC says to hell with getting blacks and concentrates solely on whites in sports like baseball, etc...in hoops...SHSU has Ryan Bright...a 6-6 white kid from Deer Park who isn't Big 12 material night-in and night-out but can play at a mid-major...

Let a SWAC school recruit Bright he turns his head as he may think SHSU is better than them but that same white kid would run in an instant to play for UT or A&M

It's a matter of funding when its all said and done as a SLC school like Texas State has somewhere near 20K students and a SHSU has 12K...which is mor e than any SWAC school....they have the advantages just on student service fees alone...

It's getting better but the gap has been bad for quite some time...

as for hoops....blacks sold themselves out for hoops years ago when they started taking payoffs........before AAU, SWAC hoops still had pockets of talent to recruit from but AAU opened those pockets overnight and let too many people in on the act

I agree that AAU really hurts, but we are losing to the likes of Tougaloo, Paul Quinn, and Texas College. That is shameful. You mean to tell me we can't out recruit Paul Quinn? I don't buy it. We need coaches who can coach and use the talent that we have. Many of our teams have quickness at the guard and forward spots yet they don't play an uptempo style. They don't press. If you know you can't shoot, then you need to speed the game up. A successful half court game takes decent big men and good outside shooters and we don't have it. And winning inside the conference shouldn't be enough. Who cares if you are the champion for the worse league in Division I? Recruits and fans certainly don't.

Sam West is next up on my radar. He's been about as bad as Johnny Thomas at Alcorn. "The Wiz" left him in a great situation when he retired but his azz didn't do anything with it. And from what I was hearing, I'm not sure that Alcorn even recruited or signed anybody this year!

Dr. Ross might as well get ready to clean house in the athletic department. Thomas is gone. West should be next. Shirley Walker should be given a chance to redeem herself. Willie "Rat" McGowan is probably the only one that I think should be safe. The baseball team has been consistently good the past few seasons. The weather has bitten us in the azz a few times and we couldn't play some games we ended up needing.

Sam West...YOU'RE NEXT UP FOR THE GUILLOTINE!!

They ain't heard ya! that's why some of them are sad the 9 game mandate has gone away. winning the swac doesn't mean a thing in any sport currently. that championship trophy and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee.

we have better athletes that paul quinn, tougaloo and texas college but style of play keeps some better athletes from some of our schools. these kids don't want to walk it up, they want to run so you've got to let'm loose. and that is also a way you can overcome talent deficits, by running and pressing your opponent into the ground. use your full roster to flat wear a team out. when northwestern state won their first round game 2 years ago almost no one on the team averaged 30 minutes and more than 10 averaged at least 10 minutes a game.

This is my personal opinion;

As far as resources and money, we don't really stack up to most Div. I schools. That is just fact, like it or not. But back in the day, we had coaches that had thier own mind. Coaches like Ben Jobe, Stewart, Sibling. The SWAC had thier own style of basketball and was not trying to compromise to look like everyone else. I strongly feel that that run and gun style of ball attracted players that wanted to play like that, better players than we would have normally got, that style was the recruiting edge we had over other programs that more resources. For instance, at Southern during the Stewart/Jobe years, if you were a 2 guard, you knew you could be in the top 10 in the nation in scoring, all you had to do was make your shots, because you were sure to get them. Anyone in the top 10 in scoring, is gonna get a good look by the pros, if you were a Power forward, you would have a chance to be in the top 10 in rebounding and if you were a point guard, top 10 in assists. Why go play for some white school walking the ball up the court, when I can come here and really play my game.

Now, we (the SWAC) has succum to peer pressure and we play just like them white schools now, this isht ain't swac basketball. Back then, many said, "We ain't gonna win no games in the tournament playing this SWAC basketball", well the 1 game we won we did it playing that old school SWAC ball. Does it look like we any close now with this mess we do now instead. Let me answer that, "HELL TO THE NO". And we ain't getting the athletes either.

In addition, our fans don't wanna see that crap. They done showed us by game attendance. With 10 games on TV every nite, they ain't gotta come out to see run-of-the-mill basketball. If we want to get them, we better crankit back up. We could wait to see if Bobby Phils was gonna get 30 points tonight, to see them 3 points raining down on some opponent, to see of they were gonna bust the clock again, to see kevin Flourent do another monster dunk straight over someone, to see Avery do his magic. I would rather lose 120-105 than to lose 65-33.

I feel the style of ball we used to play attracted a higher level of player.
THE POST OF THE CENTURY.:tup::)

Texas College, Paul Quinn, etc. don't have to worry about grades or clocks....if Trey Johnson had another year, he could take 4 years off and come back to finish his last year...also, practice times are different as NAIA has 192 days of practice or something like that...

there's some major talent in the NAIA ranks and they are dangerous to play....you saw in exhibition season how many D-1s lost to D2s...

Merrit wasn't even pitching at SHSU...he should've been at PV out of high school but it worked out and he prospered at Southern...

the thing I see though is would the Southland reward a SWAC coach outside of basketball who's successful to coach baseball, football or softball? Has there been a black coach in the Southland ever in football?

As it relates to head coach, not sure. I can not think of one off the top of my head. A SWAC coach becoming a HC in football, basketball, baseball or softball...does not seem like it would be much of a pay increase, if any from the SWAC. The SWAC pays better in football, can't speak to the other sports. It'd seem to be more of a lateral move...not really "advancement"...

I'll use Robertson at PV as an example since I know what he has dealt with....it would be an advancement as he gets to get into the homes of kids who may not listen at him at PV and he'll get a significant budget increase as well all know Mark Johnson isn't coaching with peanuts

Alot of times, the SWAC suffers in OOC due to pitching..imagine Rob having a chance to go into a kid's home from Spring, Klein, etc. to recruit pitching instead of trying to recruit nationally for quality pitching?

HBCU baseball coaches are forced to work way harder than their white counterparts as black baseball talent is scarce

swac basketball ain't SH@T!!!!!!!!!!!

How da F@CK JSU loose to Chicago State. CSU AIN'T SH@T!!!!!!!!!!!!! They ain't suppose to loose to them mother fockers. This is a new d@m low.

:smh: :smh: :smh: :smh: :smh: :smh: :smh: :smh: :smh:

:shame: :shame: :shame: :shame: :shame: :shame: :shame:

I would have went to that blowout if I would have known about it.

:upset::upset::upset: :angry::angry::angry:

My eyes are all on Texas Southern now.

We play them next Saturday and we'll enter the game 8-0 after a big road win against Rick Majerus and the Saint Louis Billikens, to go along with other strong wins including Texas Tech, Fresno State and Wisc-Milwaukee.

TxSo faithful -- what can you tell me about your squad? We sure that Ronnie Turner is going to be at the game?

And of course, any Tigers that want to give us a head's up, please feel free to head over to KatFans.com, game thread is already up...

I think he signed 4 players; but again the SID did not get the names out. That holds true for the girls also. Once Prez Ross comes on board next month these are some of the problems he will have to correct.

Valley should have been Belhaven bu more than 20.

At this point, I'm just glad they won. :smh: And while I know NAIA schools have different rules there is no way we should be losing to them and struggling to beat programs like Belhaven and Tougaloo. Right now, the worse teams in some mid-level and small Division I conferences could beat our best.

I haven't been to any games because they are all away, but I know we have an interim coach with 4 or 5 scholarship players and the rest are walk-ons. I will not be in attendance on saturday, but I may listen to the game on the internet.

I remember him playing against us a few years at SHSU and he didn't get any playing time. If he wouldn't have went to SU, he would;ve never been drafted. He was drafted as a P, and I don't think SHSU would've ever pitched him...
