SWAC Approves 7-Game Conference Football Schedule Starting 2017

I've never liked the idea of playing conference teams as "non-conference" games. Southern and JSU, for example, should be able to survive one year without playing each other. The schools should use the opportunity to pursue other match-ups.

That being said, it's going to happen unless it's explicitly outlawed, so we might as well deal with it. Since it's going to happen, it negates the need for setting permanent inter-divisional rivals, which could never be done in a fair manner in the first place.

Okay I'm a long-term lerker on this site, long-term follower of the SWAC and a proud graduate of Texas Southern. I'm in favor of going to 7 conference games and I agree that there should be some sort of permanent cross division match-up like what the SEC has. But it should be two permanent cross division foes for each team. That way you would eliminate the need to schedule conference opponents in non-conference games.

Let's TSU as an example. Let's say our two permanent cross division opponents are the two Alabama schools. But we would rotate playing each of the three Mississippi. Here's how it could look.

2017
@Bama State
AAMU
@JSU

2018
Bama State
@AAMU
Alcorn

2019
@Bama State
AAMU
@MVSU

Then you start over again only instead of going to Jackson State they would come here.

I don't think their should be a permanent rival on the other side.
First... That sounds great for Grambling, Southern, Jackson, and Alcorn if the permanent rival was one of the other.
But, why would AAMU, Bama State, or Valley want to be permanent rivals with PV, UAPB, or TxSo and vice versa?

That why some are saying there should be no permanent rival because of that reason. SU and JSU would claim each other which would probably leave Alcorn and Grambling for each. The mess will come around when (for example) JSU has to roll Grambling off the schedule. If you don't put language in the by laws stating you can't claim a SWAC school as an OOC game then those schools would do it. If you don't do the permanent rival designation that would really encourage it when SU has to roll JSU off the schedule for a year. And as someone pointed out to me on Facebook, the JSU/PV situation is what brought the 9 game mandate back. Imagine if it one of those years with 12 games on the schedule and you got 5 cracks at a good OOC school and a school pulls that scheduling a SWAC school as an OOC mess. All the moaning and complaining that has been done for years on here would be moot.

Valley and UAPB makes sense because of distance simply because we're the closest school to each other in the opposite division
.

You folks keep saying that, yet JSU , SU and GSU has played schools like Lynchburg. Do they teach y'all to lie at your Universities?

I agree.. but for JSU, that is a recent occurrence and it all depends on who is making the decision. I recall a time when JSU had too much pride to schedule 1-A and D2 schools all of the time. When we did, it was a very rare occurrence. Now, I am afraid to see a JSU schedule.

You all would certainly get UAPB. That would leave the BAMAs and the Texans and that ain't happening.

What part of THERE WILL BE NO RULES DO YOU ALL NOT GET?

That's the problem and THAT is why it should remain at 9 games.

I think they all get you're just blowing smoke out your butt as usual and that you have absolutely no evidence of what you're claiming.

LMAO....Again, Checks and Balances LMAO. This is EXACTLY why The SWAC needs my SWAC Championship Game Rule.

If JSU And Grambling meet in Houston, they are AUTOMATICALLY a CONFERENCE GAME for next year.

We Have to Empower the Role of being a SWAC Champion in our conference.

Sometimes I wish you had never learned how to spell. Cause now, you just post to be posting... sheesh!

Also, until you show me some rules, chances are things are gonna be just like they were the first two times..

Actually, with no intent to be negative, but just a point of reference, Southern and Alcorn are the closest schools in opposite divisions.

True but before last year... SU-Alcorn was blah. Alcorn became a lil relevant lately... LOL but still not your top EAST rival. That Alcorn-GSU rivalry used to be something SERIOUS!

I think brother 662 is referring to Valley in relation to SWAC West members. It's 147 miles between Itta Bena and Pine Bluff.

Southern and Alcorn are 108 miles apart if you take the back way, but 119 miles (and four added minutes) if you go up US 61.

Jackson State and Grambling are 154 miles apart.

...........

But the conference has really nip that conference-game-thats-a-nonconference-game (bleep) in the bud.

Ironically, the 7-game conference schedule can actually help the Texas and Alabama schools a lot more than some of us are letting on. Their proximity to other FCS schools give those schools opportunities to have good home-and-home series without breaking the bank on travel.

I think there's opportunities for all 10 members to really have good looking schedules that help our schools make some money.

For the two Texas and Alabama schools, one key benefit would be to have a year in which a trip to either Texas or Alabama isn't even necessary. I'm not sure about all of the logistics necessary for scheduling, but I guessing, for example, Texas Southern or PV, would have to have a schedule that doesn't require a road trip to the state of Alabama. Not having to take that trip would save thousands to the budget.

I also meant that we know that SU/JSU and Grambling/Alcorn would claim each other as a permanent rival so it would make sense for Valley and PB to do so. As someone said, that would leave the TX and AL schools in the cold and I imagine that won't fly with them..

And as you said (along with others), kill that playing a SWAC school as an OOC conference game before it even starts (Some of the the same people that are saying X schools would have no problem finding an OOC schedule would pull that because they don't want to roll a cross-conference rival off the schedule completely)

Do you mean make some money by playing FBS schools?
What will be different this time around? This is the THIRD time we have had a 7 game format and the schools themselves messed it up. Yet, the conference didn't learn from it. As far as we can tell, they didn't put ANY scheduling stipulations in place and that's going to be terrible. The conference should have mandated that all 4 OOC games be vs FCS competition unless approved by the conference and evidence of trying to schedule a fellow FCS team should be document to approve the FBS team. If we wanted to schedule FBS teams on years where we can play 12 games, that would be fine.

But we have no guidelines so you will have a bunch of Lynchburgs, College of Faith, Concordia, Texas College, etc.... coupled with some major beatings. I don't see anything attractive about that. At least with the 9 game format, we HAD to play NINE FCS conference teams.

I say this based on limited information, without being aware of ALL of the options, but why would TSU, PV, ASU and AAMU have to be "permanent rivals"? Is it really necessary? The SWAC rivalries that have been established over the years are in part due to the distances between. GSU, SU, JSU, Alcorn, MVSU and UAPB have benefited due to close distances, but I really see no benefit for TSU-PV and ASU-AAMU to do the same. It shouldn't be required of them...as there is a financial benefit for those school to not have to play EVERY year. The rivalries for those schools, because they are regional, are already built in due to the fact that they are in the same division.

In other words, I think we can have it both ways and it would be beneficial to all schools.

Also, there's a question of how teams roll off. How will the SWAC equitably roll with three non-divisional conference games amongst five teams?

Let's suppose a six-year cycle of teams rolling off the conference schedule. We know teams will have four divisional games ... but what about the three from the other division? Assuming the whole "no permanent rivals" deal..

So in 2017...let's say Southern has Alabama State, Alabama A&M and Alcorn (Jackson State and Miss. Valley roll off)...
so in 2018 ... AAMU, Alcorn and JSU (Valley & Bama St.)
in 2019: ... Alcorn, JSU and Valley (Bama State and AAMU)
2020: JSU, Valley and Bama St. (AAMU & Alcorn off)
2021: Valley, Bama St. and AAMU (Alcorn & JSU off)
2022: back to Bama St. AAMU and Alcorn (back to JSU and Valley off)...

If this is the case...Southern would play...
Alabama State (4 seasons): 2017, 2020, 2021 and 2022
Alabama A&M (4 seasons): 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022
Alcorn (4 seasons): 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022
Jackson State (3 seasons): 2018, 2019 and 2020
Valley (3 seasons): 2019, 2020 and 2021

Now with permanent rivals...(Southern with Jackson State for the sake of the discussion); the cycle would shorten to five seasons

in 2017: JSU, AAMU & Bama State (Alcorn and Valley off)
2018: JSU, Bama State & Alcorn (Valley and AAMU off)
2019: JSU, Alcorn & Valley (AAMU & Bama State off)
2020: JSU, Valley & AAMU (Bama State & Alcorn off)
2021: back to JSU, AAMU & Bama State (Alcorn and Valley off)

In this case ... Southern would play
JSU: Five years as permanent rival
AAMU (3 seasons): 2017, 2020 and 2021
Bama State (3 seasons): 2017, 2018 and 2021
Alcorn (2 seasons): 2018, 2019
Valley (2seasons): 2019, 2020

In order for a 7-game slate to work without all the bellyaching....the conference should've added two more schools and would've created two sets of three teams to roll on and off the schedule.

If not, the 8-game slate would've sufficed to equitably distribute the games amongst conference members.

The numbers will never line up using a six-year cycle. In a five-year cycle, you would end up playing each team from the opposite division three times.

what you are stating is DUMB..... schedules are made years in advance.... you cant wait to see who those two teams are based on them meeting up. What is Grambling alrady has signed a contract to play someone else the next year.
