SWAC ADs vote to ban SU and JSU from the SCG

Re: It's official. SU and JSU have been banned from the SCG.

What this got to do with any so-called "massa". I was against banning both schools, but why in the L would you equate this as being answering to "massa"?

Because we as Black folks are already behind the eight-ball, but we want to punish ourselves even MORE than the White folks want us to be punished just to impress them. That was my point. Massa (the NCAA) has already punished us, but that wasn't enough for us. LOL!! We need more flogging from our own.

We are usually harder on each other than the White folks are harder on us.

Re: It's official. SU and JSU have been banned from the SCG.

If it's backwoods thinking, then why are the larger schools spending millions on tutoring and other resources to keep players in school? I guess their thinking is backwoods too. Fact of the matter is, HBCU's don't have the funding for multiple compliance officers nor the funding to provide resources to help keep a lot of these academically troubled players in school.

And usually, the kinds of players that come to HBCU's are the ones with the most problems not only academically, but socially as well. Just going to class isn't all there is to it, but you can believe that it is if you want to. I used to think that, but not anymore.

If one Public HBCU can get a good APR all should be able to. Damn the excuses. Blacks always worked with less. Has been like that always, get away from the wall.

Re: It's official. SU and JSU have been banned from the SCG.

Voice of Reason,

We should all know that AD's votes are motivated on different things than school Pres/Chancelors.....They vote for the interest of their department/athletic program whereas Pres/Chancelors votes are more inline of the thought process of CEO's which are bottonline thinking. There are many instances where the two were/are not consistant. Which renders votes from coaches and AD's moot to a certain degree. Perfect example would be the SEC vote on limiting football signings to 25 from 28...every Ad and coach within the conference voted against the proposal however the Presidents voted for the measure....

Valid Point!

This was the case in the MEAC with the Legacy Bowl. The MEAC directors of athletics voted for the approval of the proposed Legacy Bowl, while the final vote by the MEAC president/chancellors (CCEOs) saw enough votes to defeat the Legacy Bowl proposed measure.

That's not true at all. The conditions are not equal when it comes to APR ratings. JSU has a higher rating than several schools, yet we're still being banned, so your point is not accurate.
The above has been researched and confirmed, even by the NCAA itself. They know they have to make revisions to such a flawed and unfair system.

Being that so many of swac fans love the Boom & the Box, which by the way are the best two bands in the swac. I suggest that we don't send our bands to entertain those tired lames, everyone knows that most of those fans from bama, valley, txso, pb and pvu come to see the boom and the box. Their attendance will suffer not su and jsu and I also guarantee you that JSU or SU will win the attendance again this year.

There is more than one way to skin a cat, I know I'm TomCat

You act like JSU has the highest graduation rate than all HBCU's in America. False my brother. Very False.

Surprise, surprise.... This just in: The presidents apparently agree with their ADs, go figure.

League presidents voted Thursday to ban Jackson State and Southern University from this year’s Southwestern Athletic Conference football championship game, voicing their displeasure in the poor academic standing of two of the conference’s most successful and followed football programs.

Voting details were not immediately released, and JSU officials did not immediately comment on the ruling. SWAC athletic directors and senior women administrators voted 8-2 Wednesday to ban JSU and Southern from the title game.

Let's see how the votes tally... it is safe to say that a majority agreed but I will be interested to see if that followed suit lock step with the AD's....

Re: It's official. SU and JSU have been banned from the SCG.

Dude, you know the SWAC gets the rejects that the FBS schools don't want and we get what's left regardless of their background. Don't play dumb.

So I guess you are applying that logic to the rest of the student body also including yourself.
Just asking sice you think all our athletes are rejects so it would seem that by your logic, the entire student body is the same since they ended up at a HBCU. :smh:

Where did I say they had the highest? I stated that they have a higher APR than several SWAC schools that are NOT being banned and the unfairness of it.

Black males in HBCU's in the nation have an overall graduation rate of less than 40 percent, so how can the NCAA expect athletes' graduation rate to be over 40 percent? It's not realistic.

That's just one area where the system is flawed for most HBCU's due to the fact that 80-90 percent of our athletes are Black males.

I'm referring to athletes and athletes alone. Do we get the top athletes or the ones who aren't really recruited by FBS schools?

Before integration came on the scene, we did, but those days are gone forever.

Ok let me use this example: South Carolina State University's Graduation Rate is Higher than JSU's and they also have a nice APR, nice football program so what are they doing that Jackson State is not? If they can do it, everyone else can. It's a public institution just like JSU and they aren't rich. Damn the excuses. The student athletes need to go to class, need to be monitored and assisted in their academics and the coaches must make sure to retain them.

APR and Grad rates are not one and the same...sure they are somewhat linked but it does not give a true picture of our problems as it relates to APR. One can manipulte APR so its reflect a positive in the NCAA eyes but not prepare student athletes for graduation. A truer method of seeing whether we are fully enhancing student athletes would be to tie APR and Grad Rates together for a clearer picture of overall success rates. It's like teaching to a test and not to what has practical applications in the real world. It measures little....

Presidents banned JSU and SU in football and SU and GSU in basketball.

I gracefully disagree. The system is flawed.

It's cool Jay because the way things look right now, you can't have good APR and a good team so these teams are gonna suck and when we come out of this mess, they will probably be in APR trouble trying to find athletes to get them a winning season.

Dude, you're not looking at the entire picture and I'm sure you had to strain yourself to come up with one school.
Simply telling players to go to class is not all there is to it in keeping them in school.
S.C. State has been building up a solid football program over the past decade, so they can pretty much dictate the kinds of quality athletes who are academically sound. When a football program isn't winning, nobody really cares about academics.

Here's a quote from a SWAC AD three years ago regarding athletes, academics and APR's:

At the rich, BCS-level schools, the solution is to throw money at the athletics department in order to provide extensive personal tutoring, high technology and guidance counseling — money that HBCU's simply do not have.

“I’m embarrassed because of what came out,” one SWAC athletic director told me in 2007. “But if we had the resources to make it better for our students, we’d have done that. If we could afford summer school for all our athletes, we would do that. We want to make sure our kids get whatever they need to graduate.”

All schools are not created on an equal footing and all schools are not located in the same geographic region where there are fewer community colleges than there needs to be.

SCState is a rare example and during the time of APR,they have had a stable program. JSU had to turn over our roster and get things in order. We are well on our way to being like SCState once things get settled.

Actually, if you get out and recruit, you will see that many HBCU kids come to us as a second or third choice. Typically, they come to us becasue we offer them more money. If you want to go to Ole Miss and have a 26 on the ACT but they only offer you a half scholarship but JSU offers you a full, where do you go? Most kids parents in this economy go where the money is. I think that once we get the kid, they like it but getting them is a task. A lot of black kids now want to go to USM for some reason like USM is some highly ranked University.

Well seems like a JSU problem to me. JSU should be light years ahead of SCSU as far as football. I guess the right people aren't in place, i know the right people aren't in place at SU and that's why i won't make excuses. Once again, If one can be successful in all areas we all can.

Well why are your people whining and making excuses? A&M had a nice APR and by far the best scores in the SWAC. Take this as a lesson, move on and continue to get better. No need to dwell, the vote is done. So excuses and whining are irrelevant.

Why should JSU be light years ahead of SCState. SCState has had a program in place with the same coach for about 10 years and their fans were patient enough to let him go 6 years without a championship. We are not that patient in Jackson. Also, AAMU had a nice APR but they sucked. Jones even stated that he needs to look for transfers. Your dumb azz will see soon enough the point we are trying to make here.

But as far as JSU goes, our APR is already up. Get yours up!

A certain coach set our program back light-years. Need I name him?
