The gooddoctors 2002 Predictions:

Look for JSU to roll through the East and the West to be settled in NEW ORLEANS

SWAC East

JSU - Superman Kent and a halfway decent defense is enough for the Tigers to win the East. However they will begin the season 1-4. Playing Grambling and Southern on the road ain't gonna be easy either.

Alcorn - Donald Carrie and enough returning starters will have them collecting scalps on the reservation.

Alabama State - It hard to figure what Coach Cole has up his sleeve this year. One thing he doesn't have is a Darnell Kennedy.
Maybe that is why he has put together a cream puff schedule. I don't see them Hornets beating the Braves on the reservation.

Alabama A&M - New Coach and a lack of size spells a long season for the Bulldogs. 3 wins at the most as the Bulldogs begin a new era under coach Jones.

MVSU - Coach Totten is following Coach Coles frormula for success, California JC transfers. He has assembled a talented group of assistant coaches. They will be improved this year.

SWAC West

Grambling State - Coach Williams stated they are still the heavy weight champion until someone knocks them out. The two folks who have the best chance at dethroning the G-men are JSU and SU. The big question for the G-Men is at quarterback. Can Eugene effectively lead the Tigers offense? We will know after the first two games.

Southern - The Jaguars are talented and have depth on both sides of the ball. Question is at quarterback. Can Richard lead the offense? If not Richard then who? Backups Fisher, is a runner and Ricks, is a passer. Look for coach Richardson to make a change early if Richard is not up to the task. First two games are going to be tough for the Jags, but Richardson has shown the ability to be able to regroup and finish on a roll.

TSU - Possibility that 8 projected starters may not play. If true Tigers are in for a long season. If they do play it's still a 3rd place finish in the West.

APB - Golden Lions are going down hill fast. Future doesn't look bright. The boys from Pine Bluff don't have a passing game and can't stop the other teams passing game. Look for the golden Lions to start the season 0-1 and go down hill from there.

PVU - The Panthers are a team that believes in themselves. Could be the surprise of the SWAC and finish above TSU and APB. It's just hard to compete each week when you only have 15 scholarships to work with. Coach Dorsey is a good coach but the numbers games is against the Panthers.

Next week: Week one predictions.
I'm ouuta here:lmao:

Good doctor, JSU in the hunt for the BCF national championship in 2002 so you can forget about a 1-4 start. You can't honestly believe that we will lose to USM, Southern, A&T, and TNState. Maybe you know something we don't know. However, if we can't beat at least two of those teams, we won't win many other games either. Those four teams don't look to be very strong this year.

Lack of size???????

How do y'all come up with this stuff???? :xeye:

I think some people say things just to "hear" themselves "talk"....:(

*wondering when the bandwagon will break from the weight of all the people jumping on...*

Brother Ntelekt - Ask Coach Jones

Regarding my source of information. Ask coach Jones "We're not big , but we are quick and we'll be in great shape" Jones, p. 69; BVQ, summer 2002.
Overall predictions for the Bulldogs:

Will start the season 0-2. will split the P.V and TSU games, Lose the next two with S.U and Tenn. State; will beat Valley, Lose the next three and beat APB.

Over all assessment of the bulldogs: Good defense; poor passing and running game on offense.

You heard it from thegooddoctor.

Read'em and weep. :bawling:

Okay, Gooddoctor.

I can respect that synopsis, but I simply don't agree.

In the SWAC, we all no that speed quite often is more valuble in size on defense (remember JSU's squad a couple of seasons ago, and what they did to "fix" things?)

It's just that you focus on our smaller, yet GOOD defense...and deduct from that a long season.

The passing game may be questionable, but how did you come to decide that the RUNNING game is in the same condition?

But okay...that's your insightful, yet twisted opinion. :)
I'll respect it.

*this is gonna be interesting...*

thegooddoctor gave his prediction for the season, NO SMACK, just his view of the teams. Following his statment, you guys are complaining, but you did not offer your predictions for the 10 teams. I might not agree with him, but at least he offered an opinion. Stop complaining and give your NON SMACK view of the teams.

And yet still, NO ONE of y'all in this post have given a prediction either, besides the creator of this thread. Practice what you preach.

SWAC East (in predicted order of finish)

JSU - A tough non conference schedule awaits the Blue Bengals from the Sipp! It will be a tough haul (no pun intended) due to the many road games that JSU must play this season. Due to the interceptions, Kent had a disappointing sophomore season. Now that he and Ausberry has been together for a while, perhaps a more consistent offense (fewer turnovers will result). The pressure to score should be reduced if the defense can come around. There is talent over on that side of the ball (upfront) but last year's secondary gave up the big play in just about every game. New DC Greg Johnson was once one of the up and coming young coaches in the league.

Alcorn - The talent level has increased on the Reservation. QB Donald Carrie had a very good season last year and senior receiver Chris Peters has (justifiably) made some pre-season All-American teams. Thomas has taken his "hits" in his effort to build the team "his" way. If he can make a title run, he will have accomplished his task. Good hiring on his coaching staff has helped his team to develop. If JSU slips look for the Braves to sneak into the SCG.

Bama State - On paper the Hornets lost a lot (Darnell Kennedy and BJ Tiger on offense and Defensive lineman Malone. However, the Cole Brothers have proven that they can recruit and that they can coach. I was tempted to predict them higher, but the loss of Kennedy plus the way the administration is mishandling LC Cole makes me apprehensive. If Johnnie Cole can develop either of the qb's in time, watch out for an explosive team who will be a key player. If the pieces fall into place, the Hornets are capable of going undefeated in that division, but not win it due to losses to West division teammates. However, if things fall into place early, watch out!

A&M - I expect that the new A&M coach has his work cut out for him. He might have to clean house (even more than at first) in order to get the ship righted. I don't have any facts before me, but I think that any intelligent coach coming in to a new situation
realizes some purging must take place.

Valley: Don't know a lot about what Valley has, but the hiring of Totten might just be a good move. I'm sure he has stirred up excitement in Itta Bena...

West:

GSU==> Anytime you lose 9 offensive starters, question marks abound. It will be interesting to see if the recruits that Doug Williams has accumulated over the years have developed enuff to continue the streak. Sophomore qb Bruce Eugene looks to lead the GMen offensive attack. A pocket passer with a good arm and a student of the game, Eugene is a different type of qb from last year's Randy Hymes. Without a proven running back and talented but all new receivers, it will be interesting to see if Doug and Spears has melded a group that can execute the GMEN smash mouth style. Defensively, the GMEN are loaded and return some veterans along the defensive line and secondary. A good move was made when 3 yr starter (at defensive end) Ronald Johnson was moved to MLB. This has helped to solidify the linebacking group that lost all three starters.

SU==> After a disappointing two years, Pete and staff have gone out and brought in an array of talented transfers. The biggest addition of all (IMO) is the return of Michael Hayes at wide receiver. The jaguar offense struggled last year once Hayes was no longer in the offensive mix. His presence should open things up for the other receivers, the run game, and also for new qb Quincy Richard. Richardson has brought in a new offensive coordinator and is expected to emphasize the running game. During the early years, Richardson went with the I formation attack with a balance of run and pass. Former OC, Mark Orlando, got too enamored with the spread and despite the offensive performance, this got away from what Richardson favors most: A ground game and tough defense. The defense of the jags will be much improved. The linebacking corp and defensive line has been looking good in spring drills (according to a member of the SU defensive staff). It will be interesting to see if the secondary has improved over last year. Lenny Williams is a good cover corner, if the others step up their play and not give up the deep pass, look for the jaguars to make some noise.

TxSU===> The question is whether Mark Orlando can generate some high powered offense out in Houston. He and head coach Bill Thomas have reunited and expect to have a turnaround season. Don't know what happened last year, but if you give Orlando the offensive weapons to fit his spread offense he will put up the points. Cortez Hankton is a quality receiver and if whoever plays qb keeps the turnovers down...look out. On defense, Leonard Mack returns for his senior season. However in the games that I have watched the best athlete on the field for TSU is Santino Hall. I'm impressed with his cover skills and his ability to come up and make the good stick on run plays. I feel he can play on Sundays. If Thomas has brought in some talented transfers and gotten rid of the malaise that caused last year's team to underachieve, then TxSU will cause some problems in the West.

UAPB==> This team is going in the wrong direction. I don't know if Hardeman's credibility is shot or not, but something just ain't right up in PB. Last year's team never got out the gate very well...perhaps he needs to rethink his offensive philosophy. I don't know a great deal about UAPB, but this team is not the same program that came into the league and made some noise during it's early years. Hardeman is on the hotseat!

PVU==> Now that they have started to award scholarships, I expect better results for PVU. Coach Dorsey is a hardworker and knows his craft. With the right funding, this program can achieve some success. Not sure how long it will take, but the fact that they have always been competitive (in most games) and fight hard to the end bodes well for the future of this program. This will be a dangerous bunch, you just gotta love the school spirit and heart of these players.

This is frightening, but I find myself mostly agreeing with MikeBigg. The only sure change I'd make would be to switch the PV and UAPB predicted finishes. Even UAPB fan feel they have nothing.

The only other toss-up-- where SU and GSU finishes. Earlier this summer I picked SU to come out of the west, but judging from their QB problems I'm not so sure anymore. Grambling has legitmate talent, and that alone goes a long way in the SWAC (just ask JSU). The question is their experience. I think that GSU's season will essentially come down to two games, and the Bayou Classic ain't one of 'em. One is Alcorn; the other is JSU. Slips in these two games could hand SU the west.

My prediction:

JSU
Alcorn
(Very slightly over Bama State. I'm still not totally convinced with the 'Corn. Wins over Grambling and Fort Valley State could remove doubts.)
Bama State
AAMU
Valley

SU (By less than a hair over GSU only because of experience and an easier conference schedule. The running game better be the truth.)
GSU
TSU
PV
UAPB

Dude, you should be proud to say you're thinking like me. The only reason I picked UAPB over PVU is the fact that UAPB will win the season opener versus Valley and in week three upset the road weary jaguars. This is gonna piss off some jags but they are gonna stumble coming out the gate against Tulane and/or Northwestern. If they open up 0-2, doubt will start to creep in on Richard and the crew.

People talk about GSU's loss of talent, but SU is going in with an inexperienced offensive quarterback and an unproven offensive coordinator. If Richard serves up too many interceptions against Tulane and NWState (both with good secondarys), it might make him very gun shy. As for the coordinator, I have to wonder. He was the tight ends coach at Tulane. I don't recall them having a tight end in their offense.

It will be a question of whether he makes SWAC defenses adjust to him or if he will have to try and adjust to SWAC defenses. If he comes in and allow folk to crowd the line and blitz Richard silly
and not make adjustments to his play...it's gonna be "Church out children cuz the choir done gone home"!

Interesting thought process. You say we're "capable of going undefeated in the East, but won't win it because of losses to West. I'm sure you're probably thinking that GSU will beat ASU, but please tell me what what other West team do you think will beat ASU to stop the HORNETS from winning the division?? We don't play SU. We don't play PV. We play Tx. Southern in Montgomery. We play UAPB in Montgomery.

Yes I may be crazy

But I really think the Jags will beat Tulane. Old RawRay just got that feeling. I think Tulane's edge last year was Patrick Ramsey and the running back Moore. I think Tulane's QB is suspect now, and all the Jags have to do is contain Moore, which is a tall order. But I really think they have a chance to win.

The Real Deal

West

==>Southern U. Loaded on both sides of the ball. Richard will be discipline and choose his shots. The run will set up the pass. Opposing defenses will not be able to key on anyone. A bruising physical defense will give nightmares to opposing offensive units.

==> Grambling St. Defense will be formidable and relatively experience. The offensive unit is suspect and may leave the defense in precarious situations. The offense will be this club achilles.

==> Texas Southern. Almost a carbon copy of Grambling. This ball club however is a darhorse and should not be taken lightly. If Orlando put some spark in the offense this team can make some noise.

==> P.View Best of the rest. This ball club will need 3 more years at least to be taken seriously. The personnel will not come over night.

==> Arkansas P.B. This team will fall prey to P.V. which will seal their coaches fate.

EAST

==> Jackson St. This team has a score to settle with foes from the state of Alabama. This offensive ball club will be attempting to exploit and demoralize eastern foes. This team is loaded on the offensive side of the ball and may have the best QB in the conference. That is enough to win the East this year. Their defense is unproven and will cost them another SCG loss.

==>Alabama St. Can be labeled the best of the rest. This is a very bad suspect year for this division and the coaching expertise of LC will propel them over everyone but J State.

==> Alcorn State. This ball club is overated. The tribe is an unproven team. 2 years removed from 0-11, successive losses to the likes of Fort Valley and relinquishing over 50 pts to J St. does not impress this poster. The fact of the matter is this ball club is not very good. An above average Q.B. and outstanding receiver simply means they are good athletes on a not very good ball club

==> Alabama A&M This team is in a rebuilding mode and will take their lumps this year. Look for the dogs to get back on track in 2004

==> MS. Valley This team is in serious transition. The Totten era can very well make or break this program.

SCG Champion. Southern U. Look for the Jags to be undefeated in conference play. This team is the best complete ball club in the conference.

I stand corrected...I thought yall played SU early in the season. I think once yall get a few games under your belt you guys will be dayum tough. Looks like you might make the rematch in GramblingHam.

Shouldnt this crap be moved to the Smack Page?

You guys dont have any idea of reality or you just dont use it. I know you know. Ooooooh I know you know.

UAPB had an overconfident problem last year. They had two running backs that each had gain over 1,000 yards the previous season and alot of the players were just not mentally ready for success. Not to add, all the SWAC defenses were prepared to stop UAPB's running attack.

This year will be better, we will beat the teams we are suppose to beat (Alcorn, Valley, PVU) and might steal a game or two against teams we are not suppose to beat (SU, JSU).

Last time each team (SU, JSU) came to Arkansas, UAPB won.

UAPB record will be 6-5

Wins
Alcorn
Valley
SU or JSU
Kentucky State
PVU
Lane

Loses
Alabama State
Texas Southern
Grambling
JSU or SU
Alabama A&M.

Conference Record 3-4 with a possibility of pulling off another win against Texas Southern. Again, we will finish 3rd or 4th in the West.

Sperm, I just hope you all can beat Lane and Kentucky State. Do you realize that you return about 4 starters. If I am wrong, please correct me.
