Southern Football Notes pt2: 2007

No, not at all. Lee is mobile, just not like Byrd. Byrd is shorter(5'11) and fast like Sam George used to be back in 98. Lee is 6-2 195 and can run and pass. He is one of those Qbs that make good decisions and not beat himself. Folks think he reminds them of Quincy Richard. All I know is you don't go 27-1 at the 5A level as a starting Qb and win a State Championship against Evangel by throwing 4 TDs and not have poise under pressure. Kid is a winner. The best athlete we have at Qb is the "Air" kid as some have named him. Kid is 6'3 220lbs, fast, strong and has a canon arm. He is R-Soph. He will start off in the number 2 slot. I am assuming Pete is going to use JC as the fail safe 3rd Qb if these guys falter. Byrd is going to be in 4th hole, and there is a big kid from Gulfport that was a Fr last season in the 5th slot.

Ok. The reason I asked is because Byrd had gotten sacked 3 times against us. Honestly & personally, he didnt look to mobile to me, so if he's the most mobile of the two that only lead me to believe that Lee would get sacked more.

He got sacked because he was running around trying to make things happen. Same thing happens to Jimmy Oliver at JSU and the reason he got sacked alot. Both kids are extremly mobile. But you can't run around in circles all night thinking you will never get caught no matter how fast you are. Not to mention if the OL broke down then you really need to make a quick decision. You have to let the ball go. Even if it means throwing it out of bounds when you leave the pocket. Byrd has the playmaker mentality and so does Oliver. That's why they get sacked when they shouldn't. Aint got nothing to do with mobility. That is what drives coaches crazy. All that dancing around. Make a decision either to run or throw. Don't be playing around in the backfield. Lee makes quick decisions. Jacoby was never that fleet of foot and neither was Levy. They excelled against defenses because they had quick releases and got rid of the ball. That's how you keep from getting sacked. Being fast don't mean you will not get sacked. Ask Michael Vick. LOL.

Byrd may not play this season. He has not reported yet. So it up to Lee and Mathews with JC as the backup.

Landry is down for a week and a half due to an oral infection. JR that injury bug is on you guys already. Knock on wood.

Byrd was sorry. I expect SU to be 50% better this year just because of the new QBs.

Shaw...we'll be ok. Aside from what happened to Byrd and Landry, this heat ain't no joke.

Uh where do you see that Byrd aint report? He is already there. They are holding him out since he had a car accident. Even when he is ready, I advocate him moving to another position just to get his athletic ability on the field. He was going to be 4th string anyway. Holliman will serve as the 4th Qb until Byrd is healthy enough to practice. Lee, Matthews and JC are plenty enough. If you need 4 and 5 Qbs to compete then you are already in trouble. Lee will start. Matthews and JC are capable enough. Byrd can take his time getting ready for the season. Hell it would be nice if we could redshirt him this year and he could get back the Fr year we wasted his opportunity to redshirt. We did Richard like that his second year. Sat him out all season.

Landry had a root canal, no big deal. He just needs to sit out next week and watch the infection. Aint like that aint normal. LOL. No different than Greg Oden not playing in the Summer League once he had his tonsils taken out. I would be worrried if Landry had some leg or back injury.

I definitely agree.

I got those reports from here. I check out all teams beat writer reports even the teams that my mighty Gators will face. Gives me insight on what my teams will face. :ebrow:

MB,

I was shole pissed at Gram while watching the Hampton game...Spears 'nem lost that game, not the players. How can you not take advantage of a team's offense without it's no. 1 rusher and QB :splat::splat::splat::splat::splat:

All the Bud Lights I put down couldn't mask my disgust.

Then that makes 3 people I know who were pissed at that game calling fiasco...you, me, and Sammie White. I have since found out that Sammie went into last season expecting more of a run game and was hoping that the Hampton game would be the coming out party for the run plays he had charted. Instead Bruce comes in and takes over...pass, pass, pass, go for it and pass again.

Those "scrambling" quarterbacks are hard on their offensive linemen... you never "know" where the guy is in the pocket so it's kinda tough to steer the defender away from his area... I have no problem with the qb pulling it down and moving up field, but that only lasts so long. As Coach Eddie used to say... "I don't ask my running backs to throw, so why ask my quarterback to run?"

Bruce trumped Sammie. Bruce was just the QB coach how did Spears let this happen?

No, he made it happen. Bruce was always Spear's Golden Child. He was recruited by Spears (and he proved to be talented) but it became too much of a "We Boys" approach.

So where does it say Byrd didn't report. Byrd was there the first week because Pete made mention that he looked like he was walking a little stiff and they would hold him out for awhile. Everybody knew that he had a car accident before camp. Also why would him being hurt make a big difference anyway? He was already behind 3 Qbs. He wasn't going to see the field as a Qb with 3 healthy guys in front of him and a 5th one pressing him for the 4th spot. None of our Qbs are True Freshmen. All have been in the system for at least 2 years now. Holiman from Gulfport is already a better passer than CJ. So I am still trying to figure out what is the issue about on a 4th string Qb. I guess we are doomed to be sad because CJ is hurt.

Then you take a mention of Landry having oral surgery and got an infection like he is out for the year or something. Good grief, the guy had a root canal. Aint like he tore his knee up or broke his leg.

I really think you are trying over emphasize every thing Joe S prints. It is not like JSU isn't having any knicks or bruises in camp or that every key player is a 100% healthy on Lynch Street. Injuries are a part of the game. Even if Landry misses the first game we would be fine. The other WRs are capable of doing the job. The heat has been the biggest factor out there for all the SWAC pretty much. We have no major injury issues right now at SU. Absolutely none.

Beans, the Qb that played against you guys was CJ Byrd. He is more of a running Qb than a passer. East Texas kid. You know they run the rock in Texas. Good athlete and great student. We should move him to WR or RB though to get him on the field. He is playmaker, but is not a good passer or consistent in that area. But if he gets in the open field, he can take it to the house.

Didn't he take an option or lead an option to a 40+ yard TD run against Jackson last year?

Didn't he take an option or lead an option to a 40+ yard TD run against Jackson last year?

Yeah he made a move and then pitched it to Kendall Addison who took it to the house. I wish that kid had another year. How he sat on the bench for that long is beyond me. SMH.

His move wasnt that great. The pitch was better.

He sold the play and froze the defender then made the pitch. Byrd is used to doing that being from East Texas.

I think the defender went for him (in which I thought the defender put a good lick on him), but then I saw Addison running down the sideline. So, I dont think the defender froze or he put a move on him. He just ran an option and pitched the ball.

Man don't get your panties in a bunch. That dude is over there writing stories like ya'll in ER or something not me. That's why I'm asking you guys whats the deal with all these wolf ticket stories.

Man I know ya'll coming to play this season. And no one on John R Lynch Street taking any of you cats lightly. Not even PV.

Qoutes.
Senior WR Gerard Landry (tooth) missed his second straight day. He had a root canal between practices, SU sports information director Kevin Manns said. ? Junior DT Frank Harry (heat) returned to practice in the morning, while sophomore G Chris Neal (heat) returned in the afternoon. ? Still out are redshirt freshman G Joshua Keelen, who may be academically ineligible; sophomore OT Allen Buckner (heat); freshman LB Marcus Clark (toe); junior QB C.J. Byrd (car accident); and senior WR RaShon Jacobs (ankle). ? Junior OT Ruben Oliver, who returned to camp Tuesday, is still just observing and not allowed to practice.

Landry could be out awhile

Senior wide receiver Gerard Landry could be out awhile because of an oral infection.

Landry has missed the past three days and had a root canal Wednesday.

?They?re going to have to go back in and do oral surgery, so he?ll be out probably a week and a half,? Richardson said.

On that timetable, then, if Landry misses all of next week, he?d be back around game week, starting Sunday, Aug. 26, for the season opener Sept. 1.

In addition, senior wide receiver A.J. Turner came down with a possible quadriceps pull Wednesday. Richardson said, ?I don?t know exactly how long it will take him.?

Another senior, former Louisiana-Monroe RaShon Jacobs, has been sidelined much of preseason camp with an ankle injury, though not the same ankle that had suffered a fracture earlier this year. Jacobs did not play last season but he is expected to make a significant impact this year.

Also still out is sophomore tackle Allen Buckner (heat). He could remain out for some time as well.

Dude, What injury on there is season threatening? We know Joe S does this. He writes the injury and who practiced report every day during the season. He always has done that. He isn't making like we are in the ER. LOL. Just reporting who is nicked up. The LSU beat writer is doing the same thing. Their All-American DL Dorsey has been nicked up in practice along with others. I can see if Joe S were saying folks are done for the season due to injury. JR can't worry about every ankle sprain and heat related injury this time of the year. Hell the NFL teams are going through that now. THat's why they hold their star players out with minor injuries so they can be ready for the regular season. It just seems like you taking Joe S to be saying SU is all hurt and nobody will be ready to play by Sept 1. Remember you posted Byrd might miss the season when Joe S didn't even write that. So tell me this. Is everybody healthy in JSU's camp right now. Are there no injuries to report on at all? Just asking.

Yeah man we lost a starter, we got one heat issue and another hamstring issue on a backup. I'm done.

Anyway FAMU is young on the OL and at the WR so they looking more beatable eveyday. Good Luck

Yep, he was perfect for the type of running they wanted to do. These guys this year seem stronger, grinding types. I hope they realize that when they get back there is that shotgun set.

He needs to come on SU campus and explain that terminology. RB's run the ball... QB's throw the ball. When you have a QB running all over the place the Lineman do not know which way to drive the DL. In a lot of cases the DL gets pushed right into the QB. Why don't we just go to what Jackson State did to us last year and have the ball hiked straight to the RB. Then you cut out all of the confusion..
