Southern Football Notes pt2: 2007

He needs to come on SU campus and explain that terminology. RB's run the ball... QB's throw the ball. When you have a QB running all over the place the Lineman do not know which way to drive the DL. In a lot of cases the DL gets pushed right into the QB. Why don't we just go to what Jackson State did to us last year and have the ball hiked straight to the RB. Then you cut out all of the confusion..
That would work if you all have a RB. If not, then let Lee or Byrd run with it.

I think these people from JSU read The Morning Advocate as soon as they wake up. :smh:

Actually I read the Clarion Ledger, USA Today,The commercial appeal and the AJC(Atlanta) First. I sometime read the LR paper also. Then I check out everybodies beat writers not jusT SU Player. Get over yourself.

Yeah Shaw, I think I read the Advocate last too. I'll read BBC news, Haiti, some French new to help me with my French, check the stock market, and then breeze through the Advocate.

Yeah man we lost a starter, we got one heat issue and another hamstring issue on a backup. I'm done.

Anyway FAMU is young on the OL and at the WR so they looking more beatable eveyday. Good Luck

You sure is worried about SU. I told you we will be fine and FAMU is in the same boat as us with the OL position. Focus on Delta State!

See you two guys Psycho and jag BR had to get on here and try to say people smacking. We been back and forth on each other's threads all day and then this. There was no smack or nothing.

Let it go and just comment on your team or respond to a question. Let it die.

Carry on.

Aint nobody laughing at Pete. Pete done won, done got paid and is retired. He is laughing at all of us including your schools that he beat over the years to allow him to win and get paid. Pete pimped the whole SWAC. He caused some schools to fire coaches, some coaches to be retired before they were ready and caused some schools to hire idiots in hope of beating SU. The one thing I will say about Pete. He done beat yall more than yall done beat him. :pimp:

Now, I beg to differ here JR. I dont think people are laughing with him. Yeah, Pete won some games and PIMPED some folks from Red Stick into giving him $200K to retire, so you're right about that.

He sold the play and froze the defender then made the pitch. Byrd is used to doing that being from East Texas.

hahahahaahhahaaahahahaah
:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:
Dude that was a give up play and you know it. That was our players fault much more than a great play by your sorry QB. They thought he went out of bounds on a 3rd and 14 option play. You are starting to be full of it man.

They thought he went out of bounds???:lol::lol::lol:

. JR can't worry about every ankle sprain and heat related injury this time of the year. Hell the NFL teams are going through that now. .

You sound so stupid talking in 3rd person.

BTW....Hughes and Comegy is Petes daddy.

Oh one more thing:

Minus the Bell years, JSU and SU are tied during Petes tenure.

Both you and GR knows that JSU would have kicked yalls ass during those 3 years.

No smack! There is no need for SU\JSU smacking. Thats the biggest game of the year in the conference. Its the no excuse game because its smack dab in the middle of the schedule, every one should know their system by then, its a rivalry game, and both teams are playing for something at that time of the year. So yeah we try to keep up with whats going on in ech others camp. The coaches just better be paying as much attention as we are.
But Southern is going to have a lot of folks worried after we put this whopping on Famu. Say what you want but be true to yourself.

Spring ended up being a mirage for the Southern defensive line.

Back then, the Jaguars seemed to finally have so much depth, with 12 linemen in spring practices and the promise of a handful more to come when the freshmen checked in.

However, SU has lost five defensive linemen since the spring, and the unit will have to lean more on youth.

?The guys are catching on pretty well,? third-year defensive line coach David Geralds said. ?We?ve got some young, smart guys.?

Gone are two tackles ? senior Isaiah Thomas, a former North Carolina transfer who had 40 tackles in eight games, and junior Alston Smith, a Temple transfer ? and three ends ? Lionel Roberts, trying to resurrect his football career after time in the Detroit Tigers; sophomore Jowelle Bullock (eight tackles in six games) and junior Jimmy Hollins (11 tackles in five games).

Roberts is not cleared to play, while Smith and Bullock left the program and Hollins and Thomas are academically ineligible.

?I felt pretty good during the spring,? Geralds said. ?That did hurt, but that happened and we have to move on, we have to get these other guys ready.?

There are 10 defensive linemen on the roster ? with four of those as true freshmen. Plus, junior Frank Harry is a South Florida transfer who came to the program in the spring.

There are two juniors ? end Vince Lands (62 tackles, 18 for losses and six sacks) and tackle Joseph Selders (27 tackles and four sacks) ? and three sophomores ? ends Don Holloway (eight tackles in six games) and Wesley King (16 tackles and one sack in seven games) and tackle Dwayne Charles (12 tackles in four games).

There are no seniors.

The real concern is on the inside, where Thomas and Smith would have made SU deep and big. Now, in addition to their absence, Harry has been in and out with heat-related troubles, while freshman Calvin Cunningham may have a shoulder injury.

Those two are the only backups (although King can slide over from end) to Charles and Selders inside.

Geralds likes the players he has, saying, ?They?re hard-nosed guys. They?re ready to do whatever it takes to get the job done. That?s what you look for, especially in that position. You have to be physical up front. There?s no way around it.?

However, the line could do with having more and bigger bodies.

Because SU is smaller and thinner now than the Jaguars expected to be, the defense has looked at playing more with three down linemen instead of their traditional four-man set.

SU has used both looks in preseason camp. ?We?re looking at both (a three-man front and a four-man front),? SU head coach Pete Richardson said. ?It depends on how the down people go.

?It?s going to be hot (in a 2 p.m. season opener at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala.). We?re going to have to have numbers. That will keep the interior guys from taking that beating. Plus, you get more foot speed on the field, because we?ve got a lot of linebackers who can run and hit and we have experience in the secondary.?

SU doesn?t have a lot of experience at linebacker, but the Jaguars are counting on having improved speed throughout the defense ? line, linebackers and defensive backs.

?(A three-man front) helps out as far as our depth, more than anything else,? Geralds said.

Youngsters get chance to make mark

The Southern football team?s depth chart has started to get firmer the last week, but today?s lengthy scrimmage will offer a chance for the youngsters to make a mark.

Southern will have a closed scrimmage for about 55 or 60 plays this morning, with game officials on hand.

?The main things are tempo, assignments and effort and, of course, to see where we can add as far as the young individuals,? Southern head coach Pete Richardson said. ?They?re going to have a chance to play a great deal.?

Richardson said, where possible, he?d hold out or limit veterans. That will give a chance for newcomers and younger players alike ? and the Jaguars have plenty of those ? to make something happen more in a game speed and have that on film for coaches to see.

The Jaguars are two weeks away from their season opener, Sept. 1 at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala., against longtime rival Florida A&M.

Stewart works at RT
Redshirt freshman Rodrell Stewart, who has been at right guard, worked at right tackle ? with junior Myles Williams as the No. 1 right tackle ? Friday.

?Right tackle, right guard, he?s going to have to learn them all because of the situation (with a lack of depth) we?re in up front,? Richardson said.

Sophomore Allen Buckner (heat) remains out, and true freshman Leslie Davis, who pulled a leg muscle Thursday, was being held back Friday.

Meanwhile, junior tackle Ruben Oliver, who had missed the first two weeks of preseason camp while finishing a summer internship, practiced for the first time Thursday, at his usual spot as left tackle, backing Trent Thomas.

Richardson said Stewart?s interchangeability is helped by the line going to more zone blocking concepts this season.

?They?re doing a good job of teaching all that,? Richardson said. ?Once he gets the concept up there, all of it is about the same.?

The zone blocking and the improvement in running backs have made the running game look fluid in camp.

?It?s starting to come around,? Richardson said. ?It took a while for them to get the gist of it. More than anything else, the backs are learning how to run it. A lot of times, all you have to do is get (the defense) going one way, and then the back comes back underneath. We have those types of backs.?

jag-br, why do you insist on posting these very informative articles show how talent depleted su is, and then get upset when folks comment on them?

For instance, the ARTICLE, not me, said that "su has lost five defensive linemen since the spring, and the unit will have to lean more on youth." Wow!! Five since spring?
It also says, "There are 10 defensive linemen on the entire roster ? with four of those as true freshmen." Four of 10 are FRESHMEN and 3 are sophomores, so in other words 7 out of 10 linemen are basically rookies.

The guys from su will have to grow up fast and learn while they're on the job.

It also mentioned that there are only two backup interior linemen available.:what: Only time will tell how this, along with the lack of depth, will impact su's defense as the season progresses. They can't afford ANY injuries to not ONE defensive linemen. Tisk, tisk, tisk.:shame:

Is this the famous cut back play that su loves to run with their little scatbacks where they fake left or right while the back goes the other way?
You stop that play, you stop su's running game.

alcorn does a good job of stopping that play for some unknown reason.

Southern takes it to the air

Coaches give Jaguars ?passing? grade in scrimmage

Southern had been tinkering around plenty with its running game through the first two weeks of preseason camp.

So with Bryant Lee anointed as the team?s top quarterback earlier this week, the time came in a long scrimmage Saturday morning at A.W. Mumford Stadium to air it out a bit.

The results were so-so after about 71 plays.

Lee looked crisp enough, but his performance and that of fellow sophomore Warren Matthews diminished as younger receivers took the places of nicked-up veterans.

?We wanted them to come out (Saturday) and just throw it, because I really feel we?re going to be able to run the ball and the area I want to work on is throwing,? offensive coordinator Mark Orlando said.

?I?d probably give it a C-plus. Earlier, maybe the first 30, 40 plays, a B-plus, but as some younger guys got into the scrimmage, that?s where the continuity and execution faltered.?

In unofficial statistics, Lee was 16-for-21 for 154 yards, including a 70-yard breakaway touchdown pass to Juamorris Stewart, and Matthews 7-for-14 for 34 yards.

The emphasis on passing made the offense one-dimensional, while the passing game itself was relatively conservative as the Jaguars were without three senior wide receivers: Gerard Landry (tooth), A.J. Turner (pulled leg muscle) and RaShon Jacobs (ankle).

Then, SU lost junior wide receiver Del Roberts to a hip injury and, as planned, pulled Stewart, a sophomore starter, and Mark Henderson, a senior who may start this season, to give younger receivers some work.

?He?s still inconsistent, but he?s still a young quarterback,? SU head coach Pete Richardson said of Lee, who is entering his third season with the team and his first as the starter. ?We wanted to see him under pressure, to see how he?d step up and read his keys.?

The running game had been the emphasis of earlier, shorter scrimmages and, day after day, team-on-team drills concentrated on the rush.

?Going in, we wanted to take a look at Lee, see how poised he was and his accuracy and the command of the offense,? Richardson said. ?The timing of that is going to have to pick up.?

As for Mathews, Richardson said, ?At times, he did well. He?s still inconsistent, too.

?The more we see them under pressure, the better they?re going to be.?

Lee was good on his first nine passes, zipping the first-team offense down the field, but then junior Edward Robinson fumbled the ball after making a catch near the goal line.

Jaguars? kicking game still has question marks

By JOSEPH SCHIEFELBEIN

Published: Aug 19, 2007 - Page: 9C

Less than two weeks from Southern?s season opener, SU coach Pete Richardson is still looking to find a comfort level when he has to choose between trying for a field goal or going for a first down.

True freshman Josh Duran, a Class 4A All-State selection after making 7 of 10 field-goal tries and 26 of 27 PATs at Eunice High last season, has yet to find a groove.

Meanwhile, sophomore Willie Joseph, a Southern Lab alum who has been stronger and more consistent on field goals in practice, did not dress Saturday because of a hamstring problem.

Southern is replacing its all-time scoring leader, Breck Ackley, who started every game and finished with 271 points.

Ackley was 8 of 13 on field goals and 32 of 35 on PATs last season.

?The concern is the inconsistency,? Richardson said.

At issue could be getting the timing down as the new kickers get used to working with holders Nick Benjamin, a wide receiver who has held the job lately, and Gary Hollimon, a redshirt freshman quarterback.

Richardson said one kicker likes the ball held a certain way and the other kicker takes his ball a different way.

?Part of it is developing confidence,? Richardson said. ?We?re having some conflicts with the holder. We have to get that straightened out. The only way we?re going to do it is more work and under live conditions.?

SU has gone so far as to film the kickers ? and the entire sequence of holders getting the ball from snapper Demarcus Turner ? to analyze the situation.
