South African bliss for Oprah's U.S. dis

I saw it on Entertainment Tonight.

How is mofo's hating when she is trying to do something for the Greater Good of Man.

She said that she aint giving to mofos that just want iPODS and a new watch. And I dont blame her on that one. Those girls looked excited about being at a clean school with new Uniforms and clean bathing and drinking water.
I think they also live at the school too. Its like a Xavier's (X-men referrence) to where they live and get their education.

REAL TALK, it did touch a brother to see those young girls getting at a shot to really ACHEIVE and have the chance to change their lives and the society around them.

I may not like some stuff that O does but you cant hate on her for this one.
Like Chris Rock said...."Its her Money and she's doing with it what she feels like doing with it".

I agree... teaching them is better than just helping and leaving them to fend for themselves. I wish I had that kind of money!!

:smh::smh:

yeah, the only thing all the kids from "inner city schools" want is an IPOD and a new watch.
just like the only thing all the kids in South Africa want is the opportunity for an education.

:smh::smh:

FACT, you can take the same top kids from inner city schools and find some of the same goals and aspirations that yall find in these South African kids.

just like you can find South African kids who want "an IPOD and a new watch"

Hey MH, let me tell you how you should spend your money!!! Can I do that and you'll be OK with it?

but Crit,
I'm not telling Oprah how to spend hers. I applauded what she is doing. But her negative generalization of "inner city" kids is wrong.

Just because she's Oprah doesn't mean that she is above saying something that is wrong. Heck, if Bill O'Reilly or Nancy Grace had discounted "inner city kids" as just being concerned with IPODS and sneakers, it'll be wrong.
It's wrong in this case too.

So, all "inner city" kids are excited about education?

What's the wrong part of her statement? That she generalized something that appears to be TRUE in some ways? That she gave her VIEW/Opinion? Or that kids in America really do want quality education over the iPods?

Nope, but I also don't think all lil South African kids are either.

Just because the lil girls who applied to Oprah's school may be, let's not think that all the kids over there are like that.

by the same token, I'm sure if there was some top prep school that inner city kids could apply to and get similar benefits, you'll see the same excitement from some of our top inner city students.

A generalization is when someone paints a picture of one way of thinking/acting/etc. being the norm. That's the picture Oprah seemed to paint with her comment. She did not say what you said... "true in some ways". She said... "If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers."

Question: In general, do the children in Africa have the same educational, as well as general, opportunities that the children here in this country have?

No. And thats all the more reason to applaud Oprah for what she is doing.

(maybe that would have been an angle she could have used to explain why she started the school over there, instead of painting a negative image of "inner city students over here. )

Instead of critiquing of how she should've told this story, just give the kudos to what she's doing it and leave it alone. Because in actuality, some of us haven't given a 10th percent of what she has done and is doing for our people. But yet, we find a reason to complain, criticize and find fault.

Truth is: She has explained WHY on more than one of occasion (on her show or other talk shows), but one would have to had kept up with what she's doing on this particular project. And since MOST of the ones who hate on Oprah (speaking in general) don't KNOW what all she does and why, they like to automatically ASSume and hate (which seems to be embedded in OUR people!) on her.

It is not hate... it is just a disagreement with the way she expressed herself about inner city students in general.

Maybe not for you. But some folks DO hate and love to find fault!

If you don't feel like it's hate on your part, don't be the hit dog.

but Crit,
I dont watch her show. I'm only commenting on the story that was posted here. Again, reread my comments. I mentioned what she said this morning, when I happened to see a story about it. She didn't knock inner city kids. She stated what she's done/doing here.

Question: (I tried to underline it, like you did yours  )
just because Oprah has done or is doing something good, does that mean her comments are above being questioned?

And absolutely not! Her comments are NOT above being questioned! She ain't God! You don't have to agree with her comments. It's just that EVERY SINGLE TIME Oprah is mentioned on this board, somebody (mostly the men) ALWAYS got something NEGATIVE to say about her. Always. And it does appears to be hate. May not be hate, but it appears that way-- mostly because of the history of their comments towards her.

Crit... look at who is having a problem with the comment right now (me and MH) and look at who usually makes the "F" Oprah posts (they ain't in here right now). This ain't hate and no one in here is hating.

Understood.

I dont watch her show, but happened to see her this morning talking about the school and clicked on this topic. Her comments from the article posted were nothing like her comments from this morning.

Go to page 1.
I get your point though.
