Signing Day Misses - Are HBCUs Hurting Ourselves

Panth - why is it wrong for an HBCU alum to "volunteer" by sending a kids name or youtube video in to their alma mater's coaching staff or even volunteering to speak with the kids parents about the school before the coaches send a letter or make that recruiting phone call? Alums from BCS schools, big time FCS schools, and even some small d2 schools do it all the time and they don't mind doing it. I usually agree with you P88, but I do not get why doing this would be considered doing our coaches jobs. We are alums who are supposed to care about the future of the athletics and academics of our alma maters. That's exactly how some of us can contribute. You have an "in" in your community with the kids and their family so help a PV, a FAMU, a TSU, or a JSU gain entrance into a living room to talk to a kid that they might not have been able to without your influence and clout. A kid from your community has the opportuntity to get a college education and your alma mater gains a superb student-athlete. It is a win-win for all.

I agree. I think we should offer, but not waste serious time against competing against Bama. Throw our name in the hat just in case they decide to transfer or get backed off of if something happens, but why waste huge dollars on Landon Collins when you can be getting the next undiscovered Robert Mathis. We just have to learn to develop players that we have. Other FCS schools develop talent. Why can't we?

And there it is right there folks. Been saying that for years.

But why would you want to do someone else's job? Is not someone on your campus being paid a salary to do just what you're attempting to do?

I REALLY wonder what would happen if I got 86$ worth of gas from ExxonMobil and then decided to try and hit up behind the counter attempting to open a cash register, which by the way I know nothing about :retard:, and think I'm going to complete the transaction myself. lol I wonder what "big brother" w/ the cameras aimed @ the cash register would think? Kinda' sorta' what and how the ncaa would think if citizens/alums attempt to start recruiting for their alma maters. :) I guess the ncaa being on your campus means nothing to you but it certainly does to me. I'm not sure and neither do I care what others are doing on their campus bcs or fcs alike. I'm only concerned w/ what those on Waller county's deal aren't doing. I don't know how to promote someone being lazy but I see sincere attempts on educating me on how it's correctly implemented.

If HBCU recruiting coaches aren't out there searching and all you are doing is telling them to look at this kid and look at that kid, then that is a difference. Then they are being lazy, and they should not be tolerated. But what NCAA rule permits you as an alum/booster to mention a kid to the recruiting coordinator? Nothing. That is allowed. You as the alum/booster cannot actually recruit the kid on behalf of the university. I think most of us have compliance websites that list out what we can and cannot do. Texas A&M sends out emails about this to all of our athletic boosters each year to make sure they don't get into trouble. You send them information about a prospective athlete, but you can't recruit on behalf of the university if you are defined as an athletic booster. I know what's on TSU website and a few other Texas Schools as well.

PERMISSABLE ACTIVITIES BY BOOSTERS

TSU boosters may attend events (e.g., contests, banquets) where prospects are present on the booster's own initiative, subject to the understanding that the booster may NOT contact the prospect or the prospect's relatives.
TSU boosters may inform the TSU coaches of prospects in their area by contacting the TSU staff and sending TSU coaches newspaper clippings with the names of particular prospects.
Continue establishing family relationships with friends and neighbors. Contacts with prospects are permitted as long as they are not made for recruiting purposes and are not initiated by TSU staff members. - If a prospective PV athlete or their family member asks you about PV then you can engage in the conversation, you just can't iniate it.

Yes FBS schools break these rules all the time, and we know we can't do what they do. But there is a way for HBCU alums to "volunteer" to help our recruiting coordinators out on kids they might have missed and/or might not have the funds to come visit in person. There is nothing wrong with us doing that, we just continue to make excuses as to why we can't. Oh, and your Exxon Mobil example is flawed to me, unless you have worked for them in the past, why would you want to "volunteer" to help them prosper. You went to PV so one would hope you would. That is not the same thing Panth, at all, and you know it LOL.

Larry Walls at Sumner high in St. Louis was one of the best ever in Missouri and he was an Eddie Robinson disciple. Coached at GSU for a time and ran that misdirection offense as well for decades. We have a former pro QB on staff as our QB coach. Earl Holmes has ALOT of league contacts and goes and works with Dick LaBeau every summer. ASSUMING SU and FAMU are meeting in the Atlanta Classic, could our coaches do a promotional tour together and visit some cities up North, talk to sports writers and visit schools and alumni chapters in joint events and have the 100 Black Men obtain a sponsor for it? Win Win Win.

Not saying all of this is easy or doable, but with limited resources, I think we can come up with viable out of the box solutions. What works for JSU, may not work for PV or FAMU, but I think there is a talent pool we can all type in methods effective for our given circumstances.

This is not a bad idea. I know when it comes to academics that the AU Center schools have students come there from other parts of the country to tour the schools. I am almost sure that PV did the same.

Recommending a kid is one thing, which is what the ncaa allows. Folx going out and DOING someone else's RECRUITING job is another. :) What happens next, coach from the sideline as a volunteer as well?

Tell your lazy folx to get off their sorry lazy asses and do the job they were hired to do. How about that simple action? :emlaugh:

I agree.

some schools limit out of state kids now as they waiver money has dried up so you can't spend alot of time recruiting and flying kids from the north, west down unless you know they're going to committ or at least think about comitting to you

I can tell you at PV we've went to Cali to recruit, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida, etc....but when your home base is Texas your going to limit you out of state kids anyway

Man................. Sometimes you can be annoying. You always got to turn anything Mississippi into a don't go there discussion.

But following your logic on SUCKING at football:

If Southern California is a must be destination, why in hell do UCLA suck turtle turds in football.

Why do Notre Dame suck? GOLDEN DOME and all that shat.

Why has Michigan sucked like a $2 prostitute? That same Michigan got steamrolled by 5 TDs by that same Mississippi State team LAST year. Why do Michigan SUCK?

Why do Illinois SUCK worst than lindsey Lohan? Aint CHI-TOWN a PLACE TO BE?

Why do the CAL suck? Fun and sun in Southern California?

Syracuse........... They been sucking since Jim Brown left havn't they......... WHY? It's New York State.

Minnesota sucks worse than a porn star. Getting their ass kicked by FCS schools out of North Dakota.

PURDUE?.................. They ain't been shat since WWII.

Tell me why these schools suck. They ain't in Mississippi so they should not suck in Football. I could keep naming but I think that is enough for you to TAP DANCE around and make excuses for.

Frat, I know what you are trying to say. But Ole Miss and Ms State aint on those schools level at all. Minnesota don't even invest in their program. Which is their fault. They could be better. UCLA don't enroll kids like USC will. Imagine that. A public college with more admission standards than a private one. Plus they have whiffed on coaching hires. Notre Dame is in the same boat with admission standards. They have not allowed any coach after Lou Holtz to do recruit whomever. LOL. Bad hires as well. I think they are on their way back. Most smart kids still would choose ND over Ole Piss and Ms State in the long run. Syracuse is a basketball school and they don't care. Still a better program than Ole Miss though. LOL. Ms State will not beat Michigan anymore. That was a Rich Rod creation. I told everyone on the board that he would fail when he got hired. You can't run that type offense and play no defense in the Big 10 let alone think you can beat a SEC level school with them undersized players. Same isht he did at WVA. All those small arse players. He killed Pat White there just like he was killing Dennard Robinson. Brady Hoke will have Michigan really back in 2 years.

The problem with the Sip schools is 1. They play in a tough conference with schools much bigger than them and with more money and resources. 2. They fight for players in the state which is not big. Less population than even La or Alabama. 3 FBS schools fighting for talent aint a good thing with a small pool to pull from while the LSU's are the one big dog in their state. 3. The bad rep the state has nationally keeps them from being able to pull a kid from other states that are not neighboring states. 4. They can't keep a good coach to save their lives. They are looked upon as stepping stone coaching jobs.

I think 88 has an issue paying someone good money to do a job, then stepping in to do it when they are falling short. Stepping up to assist in an environment of limited resources is different than making up for others incompetence.

But don't you think the things that were referred to (alerting the coaches of a potential recruit, speaking positive for our schools..) are "stepping up to assist" as opposed to doing somebody else's job?

No. Most of us are doing that already. But I think he balked at writing letters coaches should already be sending out by the hundreds.

But I think he balked at writing letters coaches should already be sending out by the hundreds.
ok, sorry I must have missed the part where tsugirl suggested doing that. MANY times I've called and/or e-mailed the different coaches at ASU about players. I've also called and e-mailed the admissions office about students. I have NEVER looked at this as doing the job of the recruiters, the admissions staff, or any coaches.

Who the heck wants to live in Oxford or Starkville for four years? LOL

I can understand the Bama HBCUs having a rough go with Auburn and the Tide in their back yard. LSU presents a challenge for Southern and Grambling, but there are no other real FBS powerhouses in the state.

Ole Miss and Miss. State aren't exactly football juggernauts either.

Not that I care to defend Ole Miss or MSU, but they suck b/c they play Bama, Aub, LSU and Ark every year. They don't have the money to compete, but they'll never admit it. I've never been to Ole Miss to a game, but I've been to several games at State. If Bama & LSU don't recruit you it's not a bad place to go. Plus you don't get caught up in the numbers game as much. Some kids would do better going to State and Ala.

BH,
Wanting to win with Talent only instead of taking the back-breaking steps necessary to coach them up.[/QUOTE]

This is probably the only statement you've made that I can agree with. However, this is the problem with the conference as a whole, not just Alcorn. There are very few skills and fundamentals being taught.

Unless you are a school from Florida or Texas you do a lot of recruiting out of state. LSU can stay in state more b/c they don't have any major competition. National Champ Ala has a good mix of in-state and out of state. It's good to get local talent to help fan support, but you put a winner on the field and nobody cares where they came from. You are just determined to post off the wall!

How long have yall been spining wheels about this issue? Prolly for the last 10 years. Swac football has fallen off. Casey brought fresh air to it but now he gone. It will go back to being boring. Yall ignore me its cool. Thats why no kids dont wanna come to a swac school. Its a bunch of bullshit

DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH it's over "our" heads. :emlaugh:  :lmao:

Thx CLIFF.

:shame:

P we already talked about how HBCUs should throw their name in the hat and send letters out to kids starting as early as possible. I did not think that's what you were talking about in this thread. Sorry your post sounded more like you were against volunteering your time assisting coaches at PV with anything related to recruiting since they got paid for to do so.

MH, respectfully, I think it's a given that we all will refer kids whenever possible.

Someone mentioned that WE ALUMS should be mailing these kids and then intimated that we sit down in their living rooms w/ their parents (that's recruiting). If asked, naturally, I think there's no ncaa bylaw that says we cannot respond. Howsinever, if one is pursuing a kid out of recruiting season et al, that's illegal. Although others do it doesn't mean that we individually have to do it. People rob banks all the time doesn't mean that you have to follow suit to make your come up. :emlaugh:

Read both of my post again P. That's not what I said at all LOL. I said get the coaches into living rooms they couldn't get into other wise. Not us as aalums actually going to talk to the recruits. Neither did I say anything about an alum writing a letter to a recruit. Everyone on this board knows there are terms on recruiting season. No one was talking about refering kids now. Like I said earlier, you seemed like you were against helping PV at all, in any capacity, and that confused me. If that's not the case, you still are still good in my book old Panther lol

I wasn't trying to say shat about Miss State or Ole Miss. I just answered the question as to why JSU, ALCORN, AND VALLEY can't attract the top 100 in our state with 3 instate FBS schools and 4 more National Powers in the states surrounding us. he talking about SU having LSU to compete with and SU can't even out recruit the other FCS schools in the state. Forget LSU.

The HBCU's in states like Louisana can't even compete with Lau. Tech and Lou laf. D2 schools give us recruiting headaches. A kid would rather sign JUCO and hope to catch on with a FBS program in 2 years than sign with us right now. ACROSS THE BOARD. Forget who wants to come to Starksville and Oxford. Looking around, mofos need to ask who wants to come to Jackson, Gram, Baton Rougue, Montgomery, Huntsville (normal)P. View, or UAPB to live for 4 years.

As usual, always one poster come in and start the "who want to come to Mississippi crap" when nobody was even talking about that shat. He wanted to know nwhy those schools was not powers and I asked the same question back to him on the ones I nammed. I mean after all, they not located in Mississippi and I'm sure they could convince top 20 kids to sign with them like bees to honey.

I swear, some of these posters, if you even breath the word Mississippi act like some white mofo from Mississippi whipped them and had them in the cotton fields. These same mofos that has never even lived without airconditioning.

Mississippi Top 100 football recruits.
ONLY 5 even considered a HBCU. 5 out of 100.

The ones that didn't sign a instate or out of state FBS schollie decided to go the JUCO route for 2 years instead of giving "us" a try. You can see what school the in-states are flocking too. Whatever Mullen is selling at Ms. State, they buying.

Mississippi Top 40 recruits............ Where did they go?

JUCO's are KILLING Mississippi SWAC schools, end of story

Like I was saying........... Damm Ole Miss, USM, Miss. State and the top 25 recruits. They a problem but biggest problem is all these damm JUCOS in Mississippi.

These kids would honestly play JUCO ball for 2 years and hope to get a FBS schollie than give us a try out of highschool these days. These kids flocking to these JUCOS are the players JSU, Alcorn, and Valley USED to get in the 1980's and 1990's. 80% of these kids got the grades to enroll at any of our universities but they think this is the better way. JUCO for 2 years then transfer to the FBS school of their choice.
