Signing Day Misses - Are HBCUs Hurting Ourselves

Luck went to Stratford.

I feel you on sending a letter of some sort. Maybe as Alums we can start volunteering to write and send letters to these guys in their early years.

Thanks. (thinks on qb @ St Pius recently that was discussed  hmmmmmm....)

Respectfully j4l, I ain't writing a gott damned thing for Prairie View A&M University. Absolutely NOTHING, ever in this life. I REFUSE to do the job that someone being paid a SALARY should be doing. I REFUSE to promote and maintain an already evident laziness on that particular campus.

Einsstein's definition of stupidity: repeating a specific action over and over obtaining the same exact results and thinking that the results will somehow change. Fire the dummies on campus who are lazy and unwilling to formulate a better solution to work SMARTER and I can assure that the solution-set will change.

ESPN OTL did a piece yesterday about the country's best prep athletes residing in the South with those kids are more than likely attending southern colleges. If that's the case, why can't HBCUs in the region acquire quality recruits?

We just don't have the recruiting budget for it. We've had white kids at Valley before, they just didn't stay. We even had a white quarterback here when I was an undergrad, so I don't think diversity would be an issue if kids from other races wanted to come to Valley.

Because some of the biggest powers in college football are located in the WARM SUNNY SOUTH. We are in the middle of football beasts down here. Cold places where schools like Montana are located is the only game in town. JSU, Valley, and Alcorn got Miss. State and Ole Miss to the north. Alabama and Auburn to the east. LSU and Arkansas to the west. USM to the south. WE SURROUNDED.

Mississippi State has signed and have on their team more top 10 and top 50 recruits IN MISSISSIPPI than all the other FBS and FCS schools in the state combined.

Who the heck wants to live in Oxford or Starkville for four years? LOL

I can understand the Bama HBCUs having a rough go with Auburn and the Tide in their back yard. LSU presents a challenge for Southern and Grambling, but there are no other real FBS powerhouses in the state.

Ole Miss and Miss. State aren't exactly football juggernauts either.

Evidently a whole lot of kids from across the nation.

Have you looked at the rosters of these two schools. Forget your predjudices. They got kids from all over the country LIVING IN OXFORD AND STARKVEGAS FOR 4 YEARS. Ole Miss has not been voted the #1 party school and a top 3 party school for the last 2 decades for nothing. GOOGLE before posting is a must.

that's deep

No, it's nothing remotely close to being "deep." :retard: It's called being intelligent. I do NOT work for Prairie View A&M University. I WORK for at&t. at&t is NOT spelled PVAMU.

It's like something is embedded w/in black people's dna or something. :emlaugh: Amazing. I guess all that free labor in the form of slavery the mindset was handed down to some of you black people. lol  :lmao:

Really Cliff its because as a alums we make alot of damn excuses for being mediocre. We say stuff like we don't have the budget or we are in over our heads. If money is the problem raise more of it. He all have 10,000 + alums across the country doing very well for themselves. Ask each of them for $10 a month. Thats $120 X 10,000+ alums = $1.2 mil +. Crude math but you get the point. But we suck at tapping into our resources, we suck at sending our 3-5 star kids to alma mater to play. Until we start looking at the Goliaths of recruiting through the eyes of David we will continue to be "surrounded" in our little box.

Dude.
McNeese, Sam Houston, Tulane, Lou Tech, Lou Laf, etc are problems for HBCU's in Louisana so get off the Who want to come to Mississippi crap. Its old and could apply to any HBCU in ANY state. Every school from D2 to FBS in every state is a problem for HBCU in recruiting. Name one state that it aint. JUST ONE.

I feel you. I am not trying to pick on SU, but with Aneas Williams, SU can get into any high school in the metro area and be welcome. People love that guy here. White people and Black. I think he is a deacon or pastor at a church and does crazy free speaking engagements and volunteer work. And Stump played here. Was very popular. Second most popular back behind Otis Anderson. I know there is big talent in the South and am glad FAMU has a primarily FL high school class, but I just want our schools to be able to cherry pick some of the best FCS and lower FBS talent up here. There are kids who would be hungry for the HBCU experience once exposed. And some of these kids are helping regional FCS schools do quite well athleticly. I think the past three U of Illinois coaches were taken directly from Southern Ill University at Carbondale. Anybody ever been to Carbondale? I have. I would much rather be at JSU as a young Black man. I went to our playoff game at Ill. Western. Talk about nothing going on. It was so sad, the Black kids from WI at the game came and sat with us they were so happy to see us.

We may not get them all, but we can get a few and build some relationships. And back day, most of the high school coaches up North played for HBCUs in the South.

Makes toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much damned sense doesn't it? But, if we wait for "homecoming" week, mf's will be drunk and high as hell spending 2 c-notes for an entire w/e on frivolous stuff. :emlaugh:

Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... :retard: Damned I'm glad I was raised where I was so I can see things for what they are.

So you cool with giving them more money for it (I guess to hire someone else into the dept) but not cool with donating your time so that they won't have to hire someone else. I get it.

Man................. Sometimes you can be annoying. You always got to turn anything Mississippi into a don't go there discussion.

But following your logic on SUCKING at football:

If Southern California is a must be destination, why in hell do UCLA suck turtle turds in football.

Why do Notre Dame suck? GOLDEN DOME and all that shat.

Why has Michigan sucked like a $2 prostitute? That same Michigan got steamrolled by 5 TDs by that same Mississippi State team LAST year. Why do Michigan SUCK?

Why do Illinois SUCK worst than lindsey Lohan? Aint CHI-TOWN a PLACE TO BE?

Why do the CAL suck? Fun and sun in Southern California?

Syracuse........... They been sucking since Jim Brown left havn't they......... WHY? It's New York State.

Minnesota sucks worse than a porn star. Getting their ass kicked by FCS schools out of North Dakota.

PURDUE?.................. They ain't been shat since WWII.

Tell me why these schools suck. They ain't in Mississippi so they should not suck in Football. I could keep naming but I think that is enough for you to TAP DANCE around and make excuses for.

AAMU picked up some guys from Illinois.
Not a direct criticism of the players any school signed, but are we missing the boat to some degree? Many have noted that HBCU recruiting may be limited in that our schools only go after a segment of the pool of quality FCS talent. That would be the exclusion of white players (to varying degrees depending on program). But in looking at the signing day lists, we appear to be ignoring the Northern Black football player. I know the large FAMU class is over 90% FL high school talent, which I love due to the talent pool there and the decreased cost of in state scholarships. But from the standpoint of limiting our reach and getting the ALL the best potential players, I think there may be something missing. There are plenty of players who play at quality FCS programs or even lower tier FBS schools (think the MAC) who we may be able to pull.

What are your thoughts?

UCLA hasn't been good in football since Cade McNown was QB, I think. Oh, and USC happens to be right down the darn road.

Notre Dame is inconsistent because the school tries try to win while holding on to their overt Catholic standards.

Michigan had three bad years under Rich-Rod before Brady Hoke came in there and won a BCS bowl game this past season. So Michigan don't suck anymore. And they won't suck for a while.

Illinois is not a football school. Never has been -- at least not since Red Grange was there. And Chicago really doesn't produce college football players either.

Cal: From 2003-2009 were a pretty decent program. Not great at all, but decent.

Purdue: Was a decent team for a long time in the Big Ten under Joe Tiller. In fact, the Drew Brees-led squad won the conference title in 2000.

The Orange, like the Illni, is a basketball school.

Minnesota hasn't been good at football since the the late 60s.

Most of this can be explained by the population migrating to the South the last few decades due to the lower cost of living, better living environments and job opportunities in the region. Also, football is not a stalworth sport along the Rust Belt that it was 40 years ago like it is in the South. As a result, the great kids won't be playing football at Minnesota, Illinois, Purdue or Syracuse anytime soon.

But Ole Miss hasn't won the SEC since 1941. Miss. State hasn't won the league since 1963. Additionally, neither school has played in a BCS bowl game since the BCS was created. However, Illinois, Purdue, Notre Dame, Michigan and UCLA have.

How can this be? You mean to tell me that Ole Miss and Miss. State, two schools that are in the SEC (the best conference in the nation), in the cradle of college football manna and are party schools, can't reach a BCS bowl game before run-of-the-mill Big Ten schools?

Some of the schools you mentioned are at recruiting disadvantage due to a number of factors as I've mentioned, but yet have won more often than either of the SEC Mississippi schools who have all the talent in their own backyard. What's the excuse?

There should be no reason for those Mississippi schools to go so long without winning anything of significance more often aside from the Egg Bowl.

I'm cool w/ ppl performing @ the highest level for the position they were hired for.
What type entity do some of you work for?lol The intimation that you are hired & allow some outside entity to perform your job funtion as a "volunteer" is mind boggling. I see why houston is a crap hole for the state if that mentality is maintained down there. :emlaugh:

Until this problem get resolved. Thats part of my reason on why HBCU football is lowkey wack and boring. Lack of recruiting and etc.

Yea I have to agree with this lol... HBCU's aren't recruiting against BCS schools anyways, there's no competition there whatsoever. It's not like a 4 or 5 star recruit is gonna say "well it's gonna come down to Alabama or AAMU." No shade just sayin. It's the smaller schools that you recruit against.

I agree. I think we should offer, but not waste serious time against competing against Bama. Throw our name in the hat just in case they decide to transfer or get backed off of if something happens, but why waste huge dollars on Landon Collins when you can be getting the next undiscovered Robert Mathis. We just have to learn to develop players that we have. Other FCS schools develop talent. Why can't we?

The next time I fill up @ ExxonMobil, I'll go behind the counter and pay for it myself since the shop may need a "volunteer" to help do its job function.

Rationally illogical. :smh:

Although I DO believe in volunteerism if the advancement is key to providing a means and ways for something positively and visibly results-oriented. And right now, in this state, I can think of only two entities where it works and works well in north texas exclusively.

Panth - why is it wrong for an HBCU alum to "volunteer" by sending a kids name or youtube video in to their alma mater's coaching staff or even volunteering to speak with the kids parents about the school before the coaches send a letter or make that recruiting phone call? Alums from BCS schools, big time FCS schools, and even some small d2 schools do it all the time and they don't mind doing it. I usually agree with you P88, but I do not get why doing this would be considered doing our coaches jobs. We are alums who are supposed to care about the future of the athletics and academics of our alma maters. That's exactly how some of us can contribute. You have an "in" in your community with the kids and their family so help a PV, a FAMU, a TSU, or a JSU gain entrance into a living room to talk to a kid that they might not have been able to without your influence and clout. A kid from your community has the opportuntity to get a college education and your alma mater gains a superb student-athlete. It is a win-win for all.

But why would you want to do someone else's job? Is not someone on your campus being paid a salary to do just what you're attempting to do?

I REALLY wonder what would happen if I got 86$ worth of gas from ExxonMobil and then decided to try and hit up behind the counter attempting to open a cash register, which by the way I know nothing about :retard:, and think I'm going to complete the transaction myself. lol I wonder what "big brother" w/ the cameras aimed @ the cash register would think? Kinda' sorta' what and how the ncaa would think if citizens/alums attempt to start recruiting for their alma maters. :) I guess the ncaa being on your campus means nothing to you but it certainly does to me. I'm not sure and neither do I care what others are doing on their campus bcs or fcs alike. I'm only concerned w/ what those on Waller county's deal aren't doing. I don't know how to promote someone being lazy but I see sincere attempts on educating me on how it's correctly implemented.
